STEP ONE:
If you're upgrading because you are having problems with your current
version of Netscape 7,
then follow the guidelines in STEP TWO •• Performing a "Clean" Install
NEW VERSION INSTALL
Install the updated version, using the "Custom" install, in order to deselect unwanted components, i.e., additional components such as Macromedia Flash Player, Java, etc. The "Custom Install" gives you much more control over the program. It's much better to install the additional components separately.
See these See these Screen Shots of the Netscape 7.2 "Custom Install.
Netscape 7.2 installs an older version of Sun Java, JRE 1.4.1_02. Due to the security vulnerability in Sun's implementation of the Java Virtual Machine, which affects RE 1.4.1_04 and earlier, then you should install the most current version of the Sun Java Plugin.
The install will automatically migrate your existing Netscape
Communicator User Profile data, if you have Communicator
installed, or your Netscape/Mozilla Profile data. If there is no
existing Profile, the Profile Manager will open, and you can create
a new Profile at this point. If you are upgrading to Netscape 7.2,
it is suggested that you do create a new Profile.
See: Create New Profile
Do not share a profile between Netscape and Mozilla browsers. Doing this can lead to unpredictable results, which may include loss of Search settings, preferences, and unchecked growth of the Bookmarks file (large enough to freeze your system). It is best to create a unique profile for each browser.
