Installing Netscape Communicator 4.xx on Windows

Prepare the Installation Files

1.  Download cc32e4xx.exe from:
    Netscape Product Downloads
    OR
    SillyDog701 - Netscape Browser Archive

2.  Run cc32e4xx.exe

3.  When the "Netscape Communicator 4.xx Setup" screen appears, ALT + TAB, use
     Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E) to go to the c:\temp directory (it might be \\winnt\temp)
     or another temp dir, you'll have to search them.

4.  Copy the netscape files to another temporary directory (e.g. c:\nstemp).

5.  Click the Cancel button on "Netscape Communicator 4.xx Setup" and exit the setup program.

Modify the Setup.ini File

1.  Find the file setup.ini in the c:\nstemp directory.

2.  Use Notepad to open the setup.ini file.

3.  Find the section [Product Defaults] at the top of the file and change "Show Dialogs=NO".
    This will make a silent install when setup.exe is run.

4.  Search for "Show Reboot Dialog=", change it from AUTO to NO.

5.  Find the section [Components]

[Components]

Communicator 4.xx=comm
;Import utility=iueudora
;Addr. Book Palm Sync=nsabcnd
;RealPlayer=realplay
;Winamp=Winamp
;AIM=aim
;AOD=aod

6.  Use the semi-colon to comment out the components you don't need. Note that you can also stop
     AOL Instant Messenger from being installed, which is not possible with the normal setup method
     or even custom.

7.  Find the section [Multimedia Support]

[Multimedia Support]
Default Path=
Path Dependency=[Communicator 4.xx]\Program\Plugins
Changeable Path=NO
Audio/Video Playback=mmedia
Shockwave Flash Plug-in=flash
;Beatnik Stub Plug-in=beatnik

8.  Again, use the semi-colon to comment out the plug-ins you don't need.

9.  Find the section [Windows Integration]

[Windows Integration]
WI0=NO
WI1=NO
WI2=NO

Component Description:
WI0:  Make Netscape Communicator my default Internet browser
WI1  Make Netscape Netcenter my home page
WI2  Use Netscape Netcenter to search the Web

10.  Change YES to NO for the options you want.

11.  Save the setup.ini file and exit Notepad.

12.  Register the Package Components

___________________________________________

The table above shows the files for each component that you need to register the package, and what files you can also delete since you wont need them (like aod/aim & other fluff).

Enter "setup.exe" as the program, there are no parameters needed, it pulls all instructions from the setup.ini.

You can even edit the bitmap files & add your company logo for that extra "neat" touch.

What can be done with this now is a sms object, nal object, or even loginscript entry, whatever your favorite application distribution method is.

NOTE: If you wish to burn this file to CD, or copy to Zip Disk, do this BEFORE you install. Otherwise you will be missing some of the files. (From my own experience.) I would also suggest zipping the files first.
