Do I have 40-bit or 128-bit encryption security?

Issue: 19970621-7
Product: Communicator, Navigator International, Navigator
Created: 06/21/1997
Version: 3.x, 4.x

OS: All

Question:
How can I tell if I have the 40 or the 128 bit encryption version?

Answer:
1.   In Navigator or Communicator, go to the Help menu and select About Navigator (or Communicator).
2.   Look for the section that reads "Contains encryption software from RSA Data Security, Inc".
3.   If the next paragraph says "This version supports U.S. security", that means you have 128-bit security. If it says you have International security, that means you have 40-bit security.

You can also find this information by typing the following line into the Netsite, or Location line:

javascript:document.write(navigator.userAgent+"< BR >")

Hit Enter. The browser will display the string that identifies your browser to Web sites. It will read something like:

Mozilla/4.06 [en] (WinNT; U)

Mozilla/x.xx is the version of the browser [en] is the language (i.e. "[en]" means "English") The first part of the display in the parenthesis is your operating system (i.e. WinNT means "Windows NT") The last character is your security grade. U is US, 128-bit and I is International, 40-bit.

Another way to tell if you have the 128-bit version of Communicator:

In Netscape Messenger, send an e-mail to yourself. Once you check for new messages, click on the message so it is highlighted. Then go to the View menu and select Headers|All, to display a list of information above the message body.

You should see a line that looks similar to the following:

X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.06 [en] (Win95; U)

To return the headers back to normal, go to the View menu and select Headers, Normal.

NOTE:
As this Article is somewhat outdated, it was brought to my attention by Antony Shen of SillyDog701, that 56-bit DES ciphers were added to both export and US versions (requires new SSL cipher suite server-side) from Versions 4.6 to 4.72. See Netscape 4.6 Release Notes

From Version 4.73 all Netscape browsers are available in strong encryption (128-bit).
See Netscape 4.7 Release Notes

Strong encryption (or any encryption) is only available when connected to a secured site with a secured port and valid certificates.
