Samuel Jay Holliday

On September 6, 1935 Sam was born to Samuel Jay Holliday and Mildred Waldeana Webb in a farm house at Newtown, Missouri. This anticipated arrival brought much joy to his parents who wanted a son. When Sam was three weeks old he and his mother and sister, Peggy left Missouri on a train to join his dad who had gone to Arizona to find work at the Snake Ranch in the Tolleson area.

Sam attended the Tolleson Elementary and Tolleson Union High Schools graduating with 12 years of perfect attendance. Sam attended Phoenix College for one year and then went to work as an apprentice and then a journeyman lather for eight years.

On June 18, 1955 in Tolleson, Arizona he married Jarrie Francis Smith, daughter of William Roy Curbow and Helen Gertrude Gallger. Together in love they raised three children: Samuel Jay, Michael Lee, and Lori Ann.

On September 19, 1960 Sam was hired on to work for Mountain Bell. During his phone career he derived his most enjoyment in working at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum where he did all the telephone installation for all of their special events. He was known and loved there as Sam the Telephone Man. His children and later his grandchildren enjoyed many activities at the coliseum courtesy of their appreciation for his dedication and hard work. Sam retired from his telephone work after 37 years of service and was hired part-time to continue working for the coliseum until a year ago.

One of Sam's loves was children. For over 20 years Sam served in his church's nursery taking care of babies, rocking and changing diapers. He also began at a young age coaching Little League. He became well known and appreciated by parents as the coach who was not so interested in winning as he was in teaching kids the love of the game and instilling fair play and sportsmanship. Sam's young life was filled with his love for competitive sports which carried over into his whole adult life. After high school Sam played baseball for a while and then began coaching and playing in a men's softball league. Sam and Jarrie literally raised their children on the ball field and it taught his sons a love for the game and eventually they grew old enough to play on the field with their dad. Sam eventually had to hang his glove up due to shoulder surgery but he never got over his love for the game and his desire to return to the field.

To Sam his love for God and his love for family were always predominate in his life. He dedicated his life to serving both. Always teaching by example he has left a 'legacy of love' to his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. Sam touched many lives in his walk and each one of us will have a memory we'll cherish as we remember his humor, his wit, his zest for life and his selfless love for others.
