Obituary of Elizabeth Swartout

Elizabeth, wife of James Webb at her home near Judson at ten o'clock A.M. on April 2, 1897, was called by the death angel. Aged seventy-one years, four months, and two days.

Grandma Webb, as she was familiarly known, was born in Oswego County, New York on November 30, 1825, and was united in marriage to James Webb, on February 20, 1848. She moved with her husband and three children to Sullivan County, Missouri, in the year 1856, where she has constantly resided.

Nine children were born to this union, eight sons and one daughter. The oldest and youngest died in early infancy, and Napolean Bonnaparte, their second son departed this life while attending Kirksville Normal School in the year 1869, at the age of 19 years. She leaves a feeble companion, six children, and eighteen grandchildren, besides brothers and sisters to mourn their loss.

She united with the Baptist Church while quite young and although she never identified herself with the church after coming west, she always lived a Christian life. She was ever an exemplary wife and a kind and loving mother, ever ready to sacrifice self for the comfort of husband and children.

On April 3rd her remains was followed to the Judson church by the relatives and friends where the funeral sermon was ably delivered by the Rev. William Judd. Then all that is mortal of Grandma Webb was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoing there to wait the resurrection morning.

The children then accompanied their grief stricken father to that once happy, but now desolate home, occasioned by the absence of mother.

The relatives feel indebted to the neighbors for their help in this our sad bereavement.
