Chapter 4

JENNIFER found herself hiding in the closet of her future home. Out in the den was the future Marty talking to Needles who was on the big screen. "Well, well!" said Needles, "The Big M. How's it hangin' McFly?" "Hey Needles." said Marty. "Did you look at that business proposal I showed you?" asked Needles. "I don't know, Needles." said Marty. "What's the matter?" asked Needles, "It'll solve all your financial problems." "And if it doesn't, I could get fired. It's illegal." said Marty, "Suppose the 'Jitz is monitoring this." "The 'Jitz will never find out about it." assured Needles, "Just stick your card in your briefcase and we'll handle it from here. Unless you want the whole division to think you're chicken!" Marty paused. Then, he said "Nobody calls me chicken, Needles. Nobody!" "Then prove it." said Needles. So Marty reached into his pocket and produced his card. "Here's my card." he said, "Scan it. I'm in." He put his card into his briefcase the removed it. "Thank's McFly." said Needles, "See you at the plant tomorrow." After that, Needles was replaced by a futuristic AT&T logo. "Thank you for using AT&T." said a voice. Then, the next thing to go onto the screen was an angry Japanese man. "McFly." he said. Marty bowed at the man on the screen saying "Fujitzusan. Kanishiwan." "McFly." repeated the man on the screen, "I've been monitoring that scan that you interfaced. You're terminated!" "Terminated?" exclaimed Marty, "No sir. It's not my fault! It was Needles. Needles was the one." "And you cooperated." said the man on the screen, "It was illegal and you knew." "It was a sting operation." explained Marty, "I was trying to set him up." "McFly." said the man on the screen, "Read my fax!" He pushed a button and the words YOU'RE FIRED lit up the screen. "I can't be fire." said Marty, "I'm fired." Faxes reading the same words as was on the screen came out of the wall and Marty's breafcase. Jennifer went to the nearest fax reading the same thing and yanked it from the wall. At that moment, her dream was over and she was waking up in the bed that Doc loaned her.

Saturday, February 22, 1986
7:53 a.m.
Hill Valley, California

Jennifer found herself wet in the oversized shirt that she wore as a nightshirt. Getting out of bed, she went over to her purse to get something. It was the note that Jennifer had brought back from the future. It was the one from CUSCO. The words YOU'RE FIRED had suddenly reappeared on it. Oh no! said Jennifer to herself. She opened the door to go out to the lab. Going over to the cots where Jules and Verne were sleeping but couldn't find them. "Jules." she said, "Verne." Then, she went over to the sofa to wake up Doc. "Dr. Brown." she said, but he was gone too. Then, she spied a note on the coffee table. Picking up the note she read it.

   Dear Jennifer:

While you and the boys were asleep, I studied the time circuits of the
DeLorean that you three drove and went back in time to the date that
the circuits told me to study what you did to alter history. When I came
back, the two boys were gone. I wanted to wake you, but after what you
have gone through, I didn't want to compound things by upsetting you so I
have undergone the task of determining the whereabouts myself. I will re-
turn with the boys shortly. And when I do, I shall bring with me the
the information on what you did to alter the course of time.

   Sincerly

   Doctor Emmett L. Brown.

Jennifer looked up from the note saying to herself "On, no." Quickly, she went to the phone to call Marty's house. To her gratification, Marty was the one who answered. "Marty." said Jennifer, "Doctor Brown and the two boys who came with me are gone. Apparently, Doctor Brown went back in time so see what I did to change things and when he came back, the two boys were gone." "Holy geez." said Marty. "Marty." said Jennifer, "I feel so responsible. I took them back in time with me when I changed history and they're stuck with me here in this reality. What if something terrible happens to them?" There was a pause on the other line, then Marty said "Hold on! I'll be over there in a bit." Jennifer heard the hangup of the phone on the other side, then she put down the phone.

Jennifer got back into her mother's mod outfit-the only clothing she had under the current circumstances and waited for Marty. Then, there was a knock on the door. Jennifer opened it. It was Marty. "Marty." said Jennifer, "What took you so long?" "It's a long way from my house." said Marty, "Even on skateboard." "Skateboard?" exclaimed Jennifer, "What happened to your truck?" She even still remembered not seeing it in the garage during the previous day. "It's wrecked." said Marty. "Wrecked?" said Jennifer, "How?" "I crashed it into a Roll-Royce a few months back." explained Marty, "Broke my wrist, the driver of the car pressed charges, and I lost my driver's license." "What?" exclaimed Jennifer. "You see, I can't help myself." Marty went onto say, "Everytime someone calls me something awful, I get mad" "Marty." said Jennifer. "One day, I was driving my truck," said Marty, "and someone in another truck challenged me to a race." "Needles." said Jennifer. "You know him." said Marty. "In my reality, I do." said Jennifer. "Anyway." said Marty, "I said 'No thanks.' And he said 'What's the matter, chicken?' So I raced with him and hit the Rolls-Royce." "Marty." said Jennifer, "In my reality, you avoided the accident. I know. I was in the truck. Then, you told me about your time travelling and that you learned that a distant relative of yours was stabbed in the stomach in a fight trying to prove that he wasn't chicken." "When was that?" asked Marty. "When you went back to 1885." said Jennifer, "You went back there to save Doctor Brown from being shot by Buford Tannen, you encountered your great-great-great grandfather, Seamus McFly and his wife Maggie. Seamus told you about the story about his brother Marty and " "Jennifer." said Marty, "If that's your name. I never went back to 1885, and neither did Doc." "Yes you did." said Jennifer, "And so did Doctor Brown." "Alright." said Marty, "That's enough. Remember, we have to go find Doc and those two boys of yours." "Doc's boys." said Jennifer. "Whatever." said Marty. Jennifer picked up her purse and produced the keys to the DeLorean. She gave it to Marty who said "Jennifer..." "Right." said Jennifer, "You don't have a license. I forgot." Jennifer got into the car as Marty went to open the garage door. Then, Marty got in and him and Jennifer drove off.

They drove around for a half and hour without any luck. Then, they arrived at the Hilldale project . Stopping at a red light, Jennifer said "This is where we're going to live someday." "Doc never told me where I'm going to live someday." said Marty. "In fact, he never told me who I'm gonna marry." Jennifer looked at him asking "Why not?" "Because..." said Marty, "Doc says that I shouldn't know..." "...too much about your future." finished Jennifer, "I had that same lecture too." Marty smiled at her. Jennifer smiled back. Then, she remembered one thing. The note from the future. "Marty." said Jennifer, "When I first saw the future..." At that moment, a truck pulled up. It was driven by Needles. He had three companions with him. "Hey!" said Needles, "The Big 'M'. How's it hangin' McFly?" "Hey Needles." responded Marty. "Who's the girl?" asked Needles. Jennifer had now heard more "Who is she?" in this reality than she has heard all her life. It was starting to get irritating. "A friend." said Marty. "Nice car she's got." said Needles, "Why don't you drive it, McFly?" "Needles." said Marty, "I can't. No license." "What's the matter, McFly?" asked Needles, "Chicken?" Marty promply got out of the car and approached Needles saying "Nobody calls me chicken, Needles. Nobody." "Then prove it." said Needles. Jennifer, realizing that Marty was going to take the challenge, pushed the button that activated the cloaking device. She saw Marty turn back to the car only to have a startled look on his face. "What the hell?" he said to himself, "Where did she go?" "Let's get outta here." said Needles. As the light turned green Needles drove off. Then, Jennifer pushed the button again to decloak the DeLorean startling Marty again. "It's a cloaking device." explained Jennifer, "In my reality, Doc had it installed a couple of months ago. Now get in." Marty complied.

They next arrived at the railroad track near the Eastwood Ravine. Parking the car, Jennifer and Marty got out. Jennifer led Marty to a spot where several months back there was the wreckage of the first time machine. "In my reality," said Jennifer, "after you came back from 1885, you bailed out of the car before it got smashed up by a train. There was nothing left of the first DeLorean." Jennifer turned to Marty saying "You were afraid that Doctor Brown was never going to come back and that you were going to miss him." "That sounds heavy, Jennifer." said Marty. Jennifer smiled when she heard Marty call out her name. But she had to continue. "Then, Doc showed up in a train with his wife and..." Jennifer looked towards the bridge that spanned the ravine. She read the sign. But instead of "Eastwood Ravine" it said "Clayton Ravine." "Marty." she said, "Since when was the Eastwood Ravine called Clayton Ravine?" "Eastwood Ravine?" exclaimed Marty, "Jennifer, it's been called the Clayton Ravine since a hundred years ago." "What?" exclaimed Jennifer. "That's right, Jennifer." said Marty, "A hundred years ago, a school teacher named Clara Clayton came here to Hill Valley. Nobody picked her up at the train station so she rented a cart to go to her new place. On her way there, a snake spooked the horses and she was dragged all the way over edge of the ravine, and she fell in." "Clara?" exclaimed Jennifer. "Yeah." said Marty, "Every kid knows that story because we all want to have teachers to go into the ravine." "Oh my God." said Jennifer, "Clara is Doctor Brown's wife in my reality. Her maiden name is Clayton." Marty gave Jennifer a startled look. "Oh shit." said Marty. They both turned back to the DeLorean and got in. Jennifer activated the time circuits. With the "Destination Location" reading "Hill Valley, California", Jennifer turned on the map of the city. After some searching, she came across an old abandoned cementary. It read "Boot Hill Cementary". It was near the Delgado mines. "We'll have to fly over there." said Jennifer. Turning the cloaking device back on, Jennifer activated the hovering device. A lurch was felt and the car lifted off and flew towards the old cementary.

Henry and Martha were walking along the street when Henry spotted two teenagers getting into a DeLorean that suddenly vanished. "Martha." he said, "Did you see that." "See what, Henry?" asked Martha. "That." said Henry. "What?" asked Martha. "Two teenaged kids getting into a DeLorean." said Henry, "And vanishing." "I knew it." said Martha, "You're cracking up." She turned to her husband saying "Disappearing DeLorean indeed! You belong in a funny farm. My mother was right. I should've never married you." She was in his face when she said that.

Within minutes, Jennifer spotted the cementary and noticed a man with two boys with him. Marty did too. And the other DeLorean was there too as was Einstein. "It's Doc." said Marty. "With Jules and Verne." said Jennifer. "And Einstein." said Marty. Steering the car towards the cementary, Jennifer landed it and turned off both the cloaking and hovering devices. They both got out of the car and approached the group. Jennifer noticed that the boys were crying. "Jules, Verne." asked Jennifer, "What's wrong." "Mommy's dead." wept Jules. Jennifer looked up and spotted a tombstone reading

HERE LIES CLARA CLAYTON SEPT. 2, 1885 FELL INTO THE SHOANASH RAVINE ON A RUNAWAY WAGON

"No." said Jennifer, "This can't be happening." "I'm afraid it is." said Doc, "All of it!" Jennifer turned to Doc only to noticed that there were tears in his eyes. "Jennifer." he said, "Do you still have that picture of 'me' with my 'family'?" "Yes I do." said Jennifer. She reached into her purse and produced the picture. Doc looked at it. Then he turned to Marty saying "Marty, I'm afraid that this Jennifer is involved with my 'wife's' existance. Look. This proves my theory." Marty did. "Oh shit!" he said. "What is it?" asked Jennifer. Doc showed her the picture. It was still the picture of Doc and his family. But now something was different. The top of Clara was disappearing. "It's like her body's being erased." said Jennifer. "Erased..." repeated Doc, "from existance." Jennifer looked around. They were all looking at her like she had done something wrong. At that moment, Jennifer Jane Parker had realized the scope of her undoing in the past.
