Chapter 4

AT once Doc told Marty, “Marty. You can’t be serious.” “I am.” said Marty, “I’ve got to help mom.” “Marty.” said Doc, “That Lorraine isn’t your mother. She’s your other self’s mother.” “I don’t care.” said Marty, “She doesn’t deserve to die because she saved herself from someone she didn’t like.” “It’s too dangerous.” said Doc. “Doc.” said Marty, “Didn’t you used to say that if you put your mind to it, you could accomplish anything?” “I did, Marty.” said Doc, “But that does not apply to suicide missions.” “Doc, I could take care of myself.” said Marty. “You’d better let Jennifer and her people do this and stay out of it.” said Doc, “They’ve been trained in jailbreaks, not you. You’ll be in the way.” “Doc.” said Marty, “Even if she’s not my real mother, I’d think I should help her.” Doc had found it impossible to convince Marty to change his mind.

Jennifer had given Marty a gun to practice with. After a few target practices, Jennifer asked “Where did you learn to shoot?” “Seven-Eleven” said Marty. Jennifer’s eyes lit up on this.

The next thing was to look over a layout of the prison. Marty was not familiar with the women’s prison like he was with the Hill Valley High School gym when he, Doc and Calpurnia had to go to 1955 and retrieve the will of Julius Caesar. The gym was easy. It consisted of two doors and a big room. (Of course, Doc drew a crude drawing of the building on a memo pad. But the layout of the prison was copied from a blueprint.) The prison consisted of mazes. Disorientation was disastrous. One wrong turn and you’re lost. Marty looked up and asked Jennifer “Geez, how did your comrades manage to get around the place?” “Familiarity.” said Jennifer, “And experience. One has to keep his or her awareness about themselves and know their bearing when going through a place like that.” “I agree.” said Marty. Then, Jennifer pointed to a spot on the layout. “This is where your mother is to die tonight.” she said. Marty looked at it. It was in the heart of the prison complex. “Marty.” said Jennifer, “If you don’t want to get lost in a place like that, you could wait outside and stand guard…” “Hey.” said Marty, “It’s worth the adventure.” “Okay, Marty.” said Jennifer, “But you have to stick close to me and follow me.” Turning to the rest of her friends she said “The rest of you, once inside split up. And if you see any electric eye or laser beams, use your pen lights to disable them.” “Jennifer.” asked Marty, “What about the cameras?” “Some of my people are manning the monitor room tonight.” said Jennifer. “You mean everyone in that monitor room works for you?” asked Marty. Jennifer nodded affirmatively. Marty chuckled. “No shit.” he said, “Hey Jen, how did you manage to get so many infiltrators into these places?” “Just say that the Tannens are evil, corrupt and stupid.” said Jennifer. “I couldn’t disagree any more than that.” said Marty. Jennifer folded up the layout and said “Okay everyone. This is a critical night. You know your assignments. There’s no room for error here. One foulup and any chance we have of rescuing Mrs. Tannen will be down the drain.” Mrs. Tannen, said Marty to himself, mom wouldn’t like a name like that.

As the others left, Jennifer had Marty stay behind. “Marty.” she said, “After target practice and before I called this meeting, I talked to your Doctor Brown. He doesn’t like the idea of involving you. So, I’m going to ask you once.” Marty listened. “If you say ‘no’ to helping us, nothing would be said.” said Jennifer, “And you and your Doctor Brown can go your way back to your own reality. But if you wish to help us, you could. But be careful.” Marty paused. Then, he said “I still want to help you.” Jennifer looked at him and said “I figured that you would say that.” Marty put his arm around her and said “Would you mind if I kissed you.” Jennifer gave a nervous smile before saying “No. Go ahead.” They both kissed. Then, Jennifer said “Wow. I feel like I should love you.” “In my reality you do.” said Marty, “Are you and ‘me’ lovers too?” “No.” said Jennifer, “I hadn’t had time for love. I’d been busy helping dad fight the Tannen regime so I had no time for love.” Looking at Jennifer, Marty saw what would happen to a sweet innocent girl like her in a reality like the one that Old Biff created.

Doc gave it one more shot. He walked in and saw Marty loading a few rifles and pistols as he was getting ready for the jailbreak that night. “Marty.” he said “Please reconsider. This is not your fight.” “I have, Doc.” said Marty, “And I’m still going tonight.” “Marty.” said Doc, “Jennifer and her associates are trained professionals. She’s had practice.” “As has I.” insisted Marty. “Marty.” said Doc, “Your ‘practices’ have been conducted on those video games at convenience stores and pizza parlors. Jennifer had training with the real thing.” “Doc, I know what I’m doing.” said Marty, “My mom doesn’t deserve to die in that chamber tonight. And that son of a bitch got what he deserved.” “Marty.” said Doc, “Violence begets violence. Just think of that.” “I will, Doc.” said Marty. There was a knock on the door. It was Jennifer. “Gotta go.” said Marty, “Wish me luck.” Doc didn’t say a word. It looked like he was going out on a date. But he was afraid that it was a date that he would never return to.

It was after eleven when they returned to the prison. This time, they were accompanied by a battalion armed dissidents. “Okay everyone.” said Jennifer, “You all know your parts. Meet you all at the rendezvous point.” Turning to Marty, she said “You’re with me.” “Right.” said Marty. Picking up their weapons, they started in.

In her prison cell, Lorraine had her last meal and was being administered the Last Rites. The chaplain was reading from the Book of Revelation:

“I John, then saw a new Heaven and a new earth.
The old Heaven and the old earth vanished and the sea was no more…”

In a hallway, Jennifer halted Marty in his tracks. “Jennifer.” he whispered, “What is it?” “Two guards.” said Jennifer, “And they’re not one of the dissidents.” “Great!” said Marty, “Just great. What the hell are we gonna do now?” “Just watch this.” said Jennifer. She jumped out from hiding and opened fire. There was a silencer on the barrel so there wasn’t much of a sound. Then, she motioned to Marty saying “Okay keep following. But don’t look.” Marty came out from hiding and looked at the direction she was shoot. He was aghast at what he saw. The two guards she was shooting at were dead. Shot up. “Jennifer!” he exclaimed. “I said, don’t look.” said Jennifer. She gave Marty a yank on the arm and they both continued.

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In verdant pastures He gives me repose;
Besides restful waters He leads me;
He refreshes my soul.
He guides me in right paths
for His name’s sake.
Even though I walk in the dark valley
I fear no evil; for You are at my side
With Your rod and Your staff
that give me courage.
You spread the table before me
in the sight of my foes;
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Only goodness and kindness follow me
All the days of my life;
And I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
for years to come.”

Marty was still shocked at what this Jennifer did. He never thought of his own Jennifer being cold blooded. At least the guards that this facsimile shot were well armed. Then, a sound was heard. Jennifer hushed Marty as they approached the sound. Jennifer whispered “This is it.” She produced a walkie-talkie. Talking into it, she said “Prepare to move in.” “Roger!” said the voice on the other end.

Lorraine was led into a chamber that had a table with straps attached to it. The table itself was configured in a way that it looked like a cross as if a crucifixion was to take place on it. The room was walled with a glass window for people to witness the execution. Among the witnesses were the press and Biff’s son Jiff. As they continued to strap Lorraine onto the table, the chaplain kept reading.

“In My Father’s house
are many mansions; if it
were not so I would have told you.
I go to prepare a place
for you. And if I go and
prepare a place for you
I will come again, and
receive you unto Myself,
that where I am you may be also.”

Then, a noise was heard. The door was smashed down and stand there at the doorway were a group of dissidents armed to the teeth. Jiff recognized one of them as being Jennifer Parker. “You!” exclaimed Jiff. Then, he noticed one of her companions as being Marty. “Well look who we have here.” he said, “My own brother, Marty. I’d thought you’d never show your face in these neck of the forest again.” Jennifer pointed her rifle at Jiff saying “That’s ‘woods’ you creep. ‘these neck of the woods’.” Turning to the chaplain, she said “I’m afraid Jesus is going to have to take his time preparing a place for Lorraine. We’re here to spring her.” She motioned her operatives to have their weapons trained at the witnesses. “Nobody moves.” she said. Some of her people went over to Lorraine and released her. Immediately, she threw herself into Marty’s arms crying. Jiff stood there in disgust. “Look at that.” he said, “A momma’s boy.” Incensed, Marty turned to Jiff saying “Watch it, Jiff.” Jennifer saw Marty charge after him at once and stepped in. “Marty.” she said, “Just get your mother out of here.” After that, Marty took his mother into his arms surrounded by armed personnel working for Jennifer.

But then, to his shock, Marty saw Jennifer have one of the female witnesses taken hostages. “Jennifer.” he exclaimed, “We’re here to spring Mom. Not take hostages.” She didn’t listened. She had her associates point their weapons at the hostage saying to the other witnesses “Anyone prevents us from letting us escape with the prisoner and this lady gets it.” The others gave ground and allowed the dissidents a big corridor of escape like the Red Sea before Moses.

Jiff stood there asking “Hey, ain’t anyone gonna stop these idiots?” “We can’t, Mr. Tannen.” said the warden, “Not in a hostage situation.” “What the hell you mean ‘you can’t’.” demanded Jiff, “I say the hell with the lady…” “Easier said than done, Mr. Tannen.” said the warden, “That’s my wife.” Jiff scowled at that statement.

Jennifer, her comrades and Marty were almost at the entrance with their hostage when Marty said “Jen stop! Let her go. She’s not worth the effort in rescuing mom.” “Marty.” said Jennifer, “I don’t know how you’d handle rescue operations in your reality but here we do things our way.” “It’s like being in the Symbionese Liberation Army.” said Marty. “I know.” said Jennifer, “They’re excellent teachers.” By now, Marty was sick and tired of this version of Jennifer and wanted his own back. He so far understood the fact that this Jennifer and her family and friends had partaken in this underground guerilla operation for a long time, long enough to be deprived the manners of the civilized world. But seeing Jennifer kill two guards and have her fellow dissidents take a hostage made him feel so uneasy that something had to be done about it. They were past the entranceway and en route to the car when Marty butted in and pulled their hostage away from them. “Marty.” exclaimed Jennifer. “You don’t need her now.” he said as he had the woman released.

Jiff, the warden and his guards followed the quarry all the out to the getaway car when they saw the warden’s wife being let go. “Okay men.” said the warden, “Once my wife’s in the clear open fire.” The guards had their guns out ready to shoot.

++++++

Jennifer stood there in disbelief as Marty had released their hostage. “Marty.” she said, “What was that for?” “You don’t need her anymore.” said Marty, “We’re almost home.” “No we’re not.” said Jennifer, “Look behind you.” Marty did. “Oh shit.” he said as he saw the prison guards pointing their guns right at them ready to shoot.

++++++

With his wife in a safe place, the warden turned to his guards and said “Now!” At that moment, they opened fire.

++++++

The bullets were flying as Jennifer turned to Marty saying “Get your mother into the car. We’ll follow you.” “Jennifer.” said Marty. “Don’t argue.” said Jennifer, “Remember, this is not your reality.” Marty got his mother into the car as Jennifer and her dissidents returned fire.

It was like a war zone out there with bullets flying and the works. Then, Jennifer ordered the retreat and her comrades did with Jennifer being the last to enter the car.

As she did, a bullet hit her in the back. “Jennifer.” cried out Marty. He got out of the car as one of the dissidents said “Get back in here.” “Not on your life.” said Marty. He approached Jennifer who said “No! Go back. Get in the car and leave.” Marty didn’t listened. He picked up Jennifer and carried her to the car.

Once inside, Jennifer said “Let’s get out of here.” Turning to Marty, she said “I told you to leave.” “And let you die or taken prisoner,” said Marty, “no way.” Jennifer turned to the driver asking “Are we almost out.” “Just hang on.” was the reply.

The car smashed through the chain linked gate and sped off down the road.

The ride was bumpy. In the car, Jennifer was writhing in pain from the bullet wound. But, Marty noticed that they were heading back to the hideout. “Hey we’ve got to take Jennifer to the hospital.” he said. “The police will probably be waiting for us there.” said Jennifer. Marty turned to Jennifer saying “You shouldn’t be talking now.” “Marty.” said Jennifer, “You should’ve let me die there. By coming back to rescue me, you almost blew a chance to get your mother to safety.” “Okay.” said Marty, “But right now you need medical attention.” “We’ve got doctors working for us.” said Jennifer, “Our hideout has the facility we need to take care of our injured.” Meanwhile, one of the dissidents reached into the First Aid kit and produced a gauze to give to Marty so he could put it over the wound.

++++++

It was almost 1:30 a.m. when the car arrived. To his gratification, Doc saw Marty get out of the car with his mother. “Marty.” he said, “You’re alive. Thank God. I heard over the radio of an escape and some shooting.” “There was, Doc.” said Marty as they both embraced. Then, Doc noticed Lorraine coming out of the car. She was safe too. Then, someone came in with a stretcher. “Marty.” said Doc, “Was someone hurt in all this?” Marty paused. Then, he said “Jennifer.” There, being carried out of the car and put on the stretcher was Jennifer.
