Chapter 3

MARTY was startled at this. “Jennifer.” he said, “You said she’s to die tonight?” “Yes, Marty.” said Jennifer.” “Jennifer.” said Marty, “You don’t just sentence someone to death and set it on the same night.” “Marty.” said Jennifer, “I don’t know about the justice system in your reality but it’s swift here.” “Geez.” said Marty, “But what does this have to do with me?” “I want you to visit your ‘mother’ today.” “Now wait a minute, Jen.” said Marty, “You said you want me to visit my ‘mom’ at prison.” “He’s got a point, Jennifer.” said Doc, “Your Marty’s a marked man here. No point having my Marty risking his neck visiting the alternate Lorraine.” “Don’t worry, Doctor Brown.” said Jennifer, “We’ve got infiltrators at the prison she’s in.” “That’s a relief.” said Marty, “What time is she suppose to die tonight?” “Midnight.” said Jennifer. She looked at her watch saying “We don’t have much time. It’s almost 6:00.” “Jennifer.” asked Marty, “When I’m there, what do I say to her.” Jennifer paused for a minute. Then, she said “Tell her everything’s going to be alright.” “Jennifer.” insisted Marty, “Mom’s gonna die tonight at midnight.” “No she’s not.” said Jennifer. “Why not.” asked Marty. “Because we’re planning to break her out of there before she dies.” “Now wait a minute, Jen.” said Marty, “Wait a minute. You can’t do that. You’ll get caught.” “And if that happens,” said Doc, “You’ll be sent up the river for the next fifteen years along with all your fellow dissidents-including infiltrators.” “Yeah Jen.” said Marty, “And your quest to destroy the Tannen regime will be flushed down the toilet.” “It’s the chance we’ll have to take.” said Jennifer, “If it works, we could get her out of the country and down to Argentina where your other self it.” “And if it doesn’t…” said Marty. “Marty.” interrupted Jennifer, “Don’t worry. Remember, this is our reality not yours.” “Don’t you think I know that, Jen?” demanded Marty. “Marty.” said Doc, “Like she said, it’s her reality, not ours.” Marty looked at his friend. Then, he looked at this counterfeit version of his own girlfriend, Jennifer. Turning back to Doc he said “You’re the doc, Doc.” Jennifer tapped him on the shoulder saying “We’ve got some spare clothes for you to wear.” She indicated a room and said “Go and get changed.” Marty turned to go there.

After changing his clothes, Marty accompanied Jennifer and some of her companions to a car hiding in a shack. Inside, Jennifer asked “Marty. How did you and Doctor Brown meet?” “Few years ago”, he said, “he showed up at my house and hired me to sweep out this garage of his. He pays me 50 bucks a week bucks a week and gives me total access to his record collection--he's got this great old record collection ” “And where did he get the idea of building a time machine?” asked Jennifer. “Back in 1955,” said Marty, “he was standing on his toilet seat hanging a clock, the porcelain was wet and he slipped and fell and hit his head on the sink. When he came to, he had this idea for building a flux capacitor which what made time travel possible.” “Interesting.” said Jennifer, “And this woman I met at his house?” “That’s his wife, Clara.” said Marty, “He met her one time when he went back to 1885. He went there because he in the DeLorean which was hit by a bolt of lightening. It shorted out the time circuits so he set himself up as the village blacksmith as a front to get enough dough to buy replacement parts which, he found out, didn’t exist then. One day, the mayor ask him to escort a schoolteacher named Clara. They fell in love and the rest is history.” “A woman from the past.” said Jennifer, “But how did he return to the present?” “He wrote me a note.” said Marty, “I was in 1955 because him and me had to go there to get a book from Biff.” “What book was that?” asked Jennifer. “The first sports almanac that Biff used to create your reality.” said Marty. “Ah.” said Jennifer. “Anyway.” said Marty, “I got the book and burned it. Doc was in the DeLorean when it was hit by lightening, sending him back to 1885. The next thing I knew, this Western Union man shows up with a letter. It was from the Doc. He told me what happened and that he was alright and he was enjoying himself. He had the DeLorean hidden in the Delgado mine in the Boot Hill cemetery for me to recover. He told me to get help from his 1955 self to have it repair it and return to 1985 to destroy it.” “Destroy it?” asked Jennifer. “Yeah.” said Marty, “Long story. But he told me not to go back and get him. So I went to the 1955 Doc with the note. He helped get the DeLorean out of the mine. That’s when we came across his tombstone which said that he was shot by Biff’s great-great grandfather Buford ‘Mad Dog’ Tannen. So, I went to 1885 to save Doc, stopped Tannen from shooting Doc. Then, Tannen challenged me to a gunfight. But I outsmarted him by using a stove cover as a bullet proof vest and when I told Tannen that I refused to draw and should discuss this, he opened fire and shot me. Thinking I was dead, he took a bow in front of a stunned crown before firing one more shot at me. But before he did, I kicked the gun out of his hands and finished him off with a few punches.” Not wanting to give Jennifer the full detail of what happened, Marty went onto say “I returned to 1985 and Doc stayed with Clara. They got married and had two sons. Doc built a time machine out of a stream train and returned with them to my time and, like I said , the rest is history.” “Okay.” said Jennifer, “But how did Biff get that book in the first place?” “His got it from his future self.” he said. “That so-called ‘crazy old codger with a cane.’” said Jennifer. “That’s right.” said Marty, “You see, Doc was in the future exploring the progress of man, found out about my son, came back to get me and while I was there, I hit upon the idea of winning at gambling and bought the first book. Doc reprimanded me and threw the book in the garbage where Old Biff picked it up, stole the time machine and gave it to him somewhere in the past.” Jennifer, pondered this. She wanted to press on when she noticed the appearance of the prison.

It was nearly eight when they arrived. The prison was surrounded by reporters, cameramen, photographers, protesters and picketers. The car drove to a side of the facility where there were guards posted. Jennifer talked to these people who let them in. Once inside Jennifer whispered “Those guards work for us.” Marty understood. The group was escorted to the visitor’s area where they sat down and waited. The room was partitioned by a wall-to-wall table with a wall-to-wall glass window attached from the ceiling and attached to the table just like Marty saw on the television shows. There were telephones on either side of the glass so prisoner and visitor could talk to each other. Marty and his companions sat down at this table and waited. Moments later, Lorraine was escorted in. Gone was the boob job. Her breasts were back to normal size. Her face was more careworn than ever. She looked at Marty and said “Marty! How did you get here? I thought you were in Argentina.” “It’s a long story, Mom.” said Marty, “Is it true? You killed Biff?” “Yes it is.” said Lorraine, “That bastard had it coming.” “Mom.” exclaimed Marty, “Didn’t you tell me that killing is wrong? Why did you do it?” “Because he shot your father.” said Lorraine. Marty was startled at this. Then, he said “Mom. How did you find that out?” “I overheard the conversation on the rooftop.” said Lorraine, “I overheard him say that he was going to kill you and a companion of yours with the same gun he used to kill George. That’s when I knew that it was him. So after you somehow escaped, I went out there, picked up the gun he dropped and shot him with it.” Marty reeled back. Then, Lorraine went on to say “I knew you tried to stop me before.” “When was that?” asked Marty. “Don’t you remember?” asked Lorraine, “It was before I really did it. I was on my way to that private spa of his and…” Then, Marty remembered. It was when Hill Valley reverted back to Hell Valley and he, once again, had to go to that Courthouse-turned-hotel penthouse to ask Biff how he got the Almanac back. He and Jennifer ran into his mother holding a gun on her way to kill Biff.

It was going to happen anyway.

Then, he remembered his second trip to 2015:

He, Doc and Calpurnia arrived in Hilldale to track down the will of Julius Caesar. Their first selves had landed the car, gotten out to go get Jennifer. Meanwhile, Old Biff had gotten into the DeLorean with the Almanac and went back to 1955. When he returned, he staggered out of the car as the first Doc and Marty had returned carrying the fainted Jennifer who had encountered her future self. Then, Marty recalled what happened next:

After sticking Jennifer in the DeLorean, the car, the other Doc and Marty, and Einstein vanished in thin air. The three came out of bushes and looked around. “Doc.” asked Marty, “Where did they go? I mean, where did we go?” “I don’t know.” said Doc. Then, a moan was heard across the street. Looking over, it was Old Biff lying next to a dumpster trying to get up. “Marty.” said Doc, “I think I know what has happened.” “What happened, Doc?” asked Marty. “When Old Biff went back in time to give his other self the Almanac,” explained Doc, “he created an alternate time line transforming around you, me, Jennifer, Einstein and the DeLorean. When you got the book back from Biff and burned it, everything changed back to normal. And we merely saw our other selves vanish into that timeline.” “What about Old Biff?” asked Marty, “What’s wrong with him?” “Do you remember your first trip to 1955 when you interfered with your parents first meeting?” asked Doc. “Yes, I do.” said Marty. “Do you remember that you were about to be erased from existence when your parents first kissed on that dance floor for the first time?” asked Doc. “Of course I do.” said Marty. “You said you were writhing in pain and started seeing your hand disappear?” “Yes, I do.” said Marty. “Well that was about to happen to Old Biff in the alternate realty.” said Doc, “Apparently, after the alternate 1985, was probably killed. Perhaps shot by your mother”

Marty reeled back. Of course. he said to himself, And when me and Jennifer got to the twenty-seventh floor during my second trip to Hell Valley, Mom was about to do it. And we nearly stopped her. Turning to his mother, Marty said “Mom. Overhearing Biff admitting to killing Dad wasn’t the only reason you wanted him dead.” “No, of course not.” said Lorraine, “It was that I was sick and tired about the way he was running our lives. You, me, Dave and Linda. I just wanted to be rid of him.” She started to weep. “I wasn’t even given a fair trial.” she said. “What do you mean?” asked Marty. But then, the guard behind her tapped her on the shoulder saying “Time’s up.” “Marty.” said Lorraine, “I’ve got to go. I’ve going to be executed in less than four hours.” “Mom, wait.” said Marty, “You didn’t answer my question. What do you ‘mean didn’t get a fair trial’.” Lorraine didn’t answer. She was being escorted back to her cell. Marty felt like picking up a chair and breaking the glass to get to her but was restrained by Jennifer. “Marty.” she said, “Don’t.” Turning to Jennifer, he asked “Jennifer. What does she mean ‘didn’t get a fair trial.’” “It was a show trial.” said Jennifer. “What?” exclaimed Marty. “You heard me.” said Jennifer, “A show trial. The verdict was fixed. She didn’t even get a lawyer.” Marty heard this in disbelief. “Jennifer.” he said, “She has to have a lawyer. She’s got rights.” “The Miranda decision was abolished in 1980.” said Jennifer, “Too many technicalities. So was the saying ‘Innocent until proven guilty.’” Marty couldn’t believe this. In killing Biff, his mother had automatically sealed her own doom. “Jennifer.” he said “Take me back to your place. I need to talk to Doc.” “Of course.” said Jennifer. The two and their companions turned to go back to the car.

In the car, Marty asked “Jennifer. How did you get started heading a group of dissidents?” “It was my dad’s idea.” said Jennifer, “After your other self’s father, George McFly, was murdered and shortly before his widow was to marry Biff, he began to suspect Biff as the killer hearing the story about how Biff wanted to have her when he was young and never gave up trying, even after George flatten him with a roundhouse punch. He tried to have him investigated but Biff, with all his wealth, owned the police department, the fire department, the banks and every government office around the country. So dad got together a group of men willing to rid themselves of the Tannen regime and organized an underground guerilla group. I wanted to join but I was only five at the time. So, I stayed at home helping mom. I didn’t go full time until last year shortly before the Tannen tragedy. I learned the tricks of the trade.” At a stoplight, she produced her gun and reloaded it. Then, put it back in it’s proper perspective. When the light turned green the car continued it’s way.

Upon arriving, Marty got out and immediately went to Doc. “Doc.” he said, “We need to talk.” “Marty.” said Doc, “How’s your ‘mother’?” “Great, Doc.” said Marty, “Just great. Hey Doc, I want to do something for my mom tonight.” “Before she gets executed?” asked Doc. “That’s just it, Doc.” said Marty, “She’s not going to be executed. Unless it’s over my dead body.” “What?” exclaimed Doc. “You heard me, Doc.” said Marty, “I’m going back over there with Jennifer and her dissidents and I’m gonna get my mom the hell outta there.” Doc stared at Marty in disbelief.
