Chapter 2

MARTY read the news story concerning his mother

Lorraine McFly Tannen, the widow of the late billionaire and founder of Pleasure Paradise, Biff Tannen, was found guilty the other day of first degree murder of her husband. The incident took place back in October of last year...

October of last year?” exclaimed Marty, “Jennifer. Biff was alive in October when we confronted him about...” “Marty.” interrupted Doc, “You’re forgetting. The Jennifer you’re addressing is not our Jennifer but a different Jennifer.” Marty turned to Doc and said “Okay Doc, I got it.” Turning to Jennifer, he said “Hey Jen, when did my mom shoot Biff.” Jennifer paused for a minute before saying “October 26.” “October 26th?” exclaimed Marty, “Doc, that’s the one year anniversary of the first time travel experement.” “And the date that Jennifer took you back in time to your first meeting with her only to have you get messed up with the teenage Jim Jandick setting off a chain reaction of events leading to the 1978 Biff altering his destiny like his older self did.” said Doc, “And causing us to return to a different 1986 than the one we left.” “Which means sometime after we left that evening”, said Marty, “my mom must’ve shot Biff.” “Gentlemen.” said Jennifer, “I’d suggest we continue our conversation inside the fallout shelter.” Doc and Marty looked at each other. Then, Doc said “Of course.” They followed Jennifer and the rest to the shelter.

The uniqueness of Hill Valley High School was that it had a fallout shelter. It was built during the early 1960’s during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In other schools during that time you had to duck under a desk whenever the air raid siren was heard.

But now it was used as a hiding place for some reason being that it was one of the few surviving sections of the high school in the Biffhoric reality. Jennifer and the others led Doc and Marty down to this dark chamber. In his reality, the shelter was sealed off to Marty and the other students of his time. Thus, until now Marty had never seen the inside of this shelter. Now he was getting a good look. It was a small place with an office, a kitchen, sleeping quarters, First Aid stations, a bathroom and a meeting room. But there were also weapons enough to start a war. It was also occupied by other people as well . “Dad.” said Jennifer, “Can you leave me with our two guest for a minute? You too, Linda.” “Jennifer.” said Mr. Parker, “Are you going to be alright with these two?” “Relax, Dad.” said Jennifer, “I know what I’m doing.” “Alright.” said Mr. Parker. At that, he and Linda left. Jennifer also dismissed the other occupants.

Once alone, Jennifer had Doc and Marty sit down at a table. “First of all,” she said, “I would like to apologize for abducting you two and taking you with me to my reality. It was necessary.” “Why’s that?” asked Marty. “Because our version of Marty is hiding out in Argentina trying to evade capture by any mercenary or bounty hunter being paid to turn him in.” said Jennifer. “Paid?” asked Doc, “By whom?” “The Tannen family.” said Jennifer. “The Tannen familly?” exclaimed Marty, “Now wait a minute, Jen. I hear you say the Tannen Family?” “Yes you did.” said Jennifer. “But Jen.” said Marty, “I thought Biff Tannen was dead.” “He is, Marty.” said Jennifer, “But his son Jiff now runs the place.”

Now Jiff was Biff’s son from an earlier marriage. Him and his mother left Biff when Marty was just an infant. After his trip to 2015, Marty learned that he was going to be Griff’s father.

“Alright.” said Marty, “Now how about telling us how you about our reality and how did you get there.” “After Biff was found dead,” said Jennifer, “we obtained the tape we used to record his every move and saw this.” She went to pick up a VCR cassette and put it into a machine with a TV set on top. While she was doing it, Doc asked “Jennifer, what do you mean ‘used to record Biff’s every move.’?” Jennifer paused for a minute. Then, she said “I guess I’d better explain what me and my associates do in this reality.” “It wouldn’t hurt if you told us, Jen.” said Marty. “Okay.” said Jennifer, “But there’s not much time. We’re a group of dissidents out to destroy the Tannen regime that’s been in power since the 1960’s. For a few years now we’ve been in existence infiltrating the Pleasure Paradise, Biff’s network of casinos, his offices and the offices of government officials and police departments that were in his pocket.” “A network of infiltraters.” said Doc, “Incredible.” “Sounds heavy, Doc.” said Marty, “Hey Jen, how about showing us what’s on that tape.” “Of course.” said Jennifer as she turned on the TV set and activated the VCR There it was: Marty’s second meeting with Biff, this time with Jennifer. It was like yesterday. “This was the night he was murdered.” said Jennifer, “That’s you isn’t it, Marty. You with ‘me’.” Marty nodded affirmatively. “I couldn’t believe it.” Jennifer went onto say, “When we obtained that tape and studied it, I nearly fainted when I saw that there was another me running around that night.” Then, she pushed “PAUSE” on the remote saying “Then we saw this.” It showed Biff showing Marty and Jennifer the Almanac. “One night when it was the turn of one of our infiltraters to guard the Tannen penthouse, they went to his office, broke into the safe and got the book.” said Jennifer, “In the morning it was brought to us.” She went to a cabinet and opened it. There it was: Gray’s Sports Almanac completely unharmed and unsinged. “Son of a bitch!” said Marty but Jennifer continued her story. “We looked at the copyright date on this book.” she said, “What we saw was unbelievable. It said it was published sometimes during the 21st century. I mean this book was published in the future! And it had all the results of every sporting event from the 1950’s to the end of the century.” Jennifer put the book back in it’s proper perspective saying “After that we went over to the offices of the Hill Valley Telegraph for further investigation. We came across the article in which he won his first horse race in 1958 and studied it.” She produced the March 27, 1958 copy of the Hill Valley Telegraph saying “This is what I saw.” It was the same newspaper that had the “HILL VALLEY MAN WINS BIG AT THE RACES” and the picture of Biff holdling a huge check on it. “We looked at the photograph and spotted the book in his coat pocket.” Jennifer went onto say, “How he got ahold of it we didn’t know until we went back to the video and saw this.” She took out the video and replaced it with another. This one showed the rooftop. There on the screen were Marty and Jennifer dropping their guns and kicking it towards Biff. Then, it showed Biff pointing a gun at Jennifer and shooting her only to have the bullet bounce off something. The Biff acted like something hit him and fell to the ground. Then, the appearance of the DeLorean out of thin air. Then, Marty and Jennifer both got in and flew off. “None of us could believe our eyes when we viewed this video.” said Jennifer, “A flying DeLorean. Then, we got a close-up look at the driver.” She went back to the cabinet and produced some photographs. Showing it to Doc and Marty, she said “This is you isn’t it, Doctor Brown?” Doc examined it and said “Great Scott! It is.” Jennifer put it back saying “When we first saw it, we thought you-that is the you of this reality-had escaped from the institution. But we got ahold of our infiltraters there and they said that he’s been there all this time. So we had to assume that there was another Doctor Brown as well. Just as there was another me and Marty.” She picked up the Almanac saying “Somehow in someway you two and myself have been duplicated and this book is somehow connected to all this.” Putting it down she said, talking to Doc “So I paid a visit to the institution to see our version of you. But that you was incoherent. Said things that didn’t maked sense. But there was something that riveted my attention. It was something about time travel. So I began to wonder about the book with a futuristic publishing date and my other self with another Marty and asked myself ‘Could it be possible that Doctor Brown was inventing a time machine before he was carted off to the insane asylum?’ So one night, me and a few friends went over to his lab, broke into a safe and took out some blueprints.” Once again she reached into the file cabinet and produced the blueprints. She pointed out one blueprint in particular. Doc looked at it. “Great Scott!” he exclaimed. “Doc.” said Marty, “What is it?” Doc showed Marty the blueprint saying “Look at this.” Marty did. He was startled. There in his hand was design for the flux capacitor. “This is heavy.” said Marty. “That’s not all.” said Jennifer, “We came across something that he was apparently building before he was committed. So we took it back to our hideout and using the blueprints and designs we finished the job. That’s when we found out that he was inventing a time machine. I mean your other self, Doctor Brown.” “Incredible.” said Doc. “After a few tests,” said Jennifer, “We put in into an old car, turned the car itself into a time machine and went back to 1958, to the night before Biff’s 21st birthday and got the book. After burning it we came back to our own time and found it altered. Both Biff and George McFly were still alive, Lorraine was married to George, the Peasure Paradise had reverted back to the courthouse, Doctor Brown here was as sane as anyone around, Biff was into auto detailing...” “Alright.” said Doc, “Jennifer. You did say you went back to the eve of Biff’s birthday, didn’t you?” “Of course.” said Jennifer. Doc turned to Marty saying “Did you hear that Marty? She said she and a few of her colleagues went back to 1958 to retrieve that Almanac, not 1955 when we destroyed it both times.” “It sound pretty heavy, Doc.” said Marty. “It means that the second time Biff got that book, the alternate reality became akin to a parallel universe.” said Doc. “Yeah.” said Marty, “With a book being a bridge between universes.” “Correct.” said Doc, “Go back in time to put the book in Biff’s hand you crossover to one universe. Go back the again to confiscate and burn it, you cross over to the other. A two-way street.” Turning to Jennifer, he asked “Jennifer, if you have time machine, where is it and why did you have to borrow ours?” “I’ll tell you when I get to it.” said Jennifer, “Anyway, we went back to 1958 and burned the Almanac. When we came back, everything was back to the way it was. So the next step was to return to that reality to get the other you, Marty. So I volunteered.” “Jennifer.” said Marty, “Why me? Why don’t you use the me who’s here?” “Because,” said Jennfer, “your other self is hiding out in Argentina. Have been for the last two years. He’s been running from Biff and his gang .”

Then, Marty recalled he first trip to Hell Valley. “’One more thing.’ he said.” said Biff, “’One day, some kid or some crazy wild-eyed old scientist is going to be asking questions about that book. If that happens...” He reached into the drawer of his desk, pulled out a revolver and aimed it at Marty saying “I’d never thought it was you.” Apparently, his other self has been on the run.

“At any rate.” said Jennifer. “I went back to 1958, got the book again, burned the almanac, went to the future to get another one and arrived back in your 1987. Only that this time, the time machine broke down and became useless. Trapped here in this reality, I had to assume that the Doc Brown there had invented the time machine so I decided to abduct you, Marty to take me to Doc’s house which is why you’re now involved, Doctor Brown. And the rest you know.” “Incredible.” said Doc. “Jennifer.”said Marty, “Now, tell me why you want me here.” “Because.” said Jennifer, “Your mother murdered Biff.” “I think I know that.” said Marty. “She was tried and found guilty.” said Jennifer. She picked up the newspaper that had the “LORRAINE TANNEN TO BE SENTENCE” headline saying “She was sentenced today. She’s to die of lethal injection tonight.” Both Doc and Marty first looked at the newspaper, then at Jennifer, and finally at each other.
