Chapter 1

IT was the day after Thanksgiving. Marty had been asleep since last night when the phone rang. To his gratification, it was Jennifer. "Marty." said her voice. "Hi Jen." said Marty, "Are you home yet?" "No, Marty." said Jennifer's voice, "I'm not. I'm sorry Marty, but I'm still staying at my grandmothers. I'll be here for the entire weekend, I'm afraid." Marty felt a lump in his stomache. Aside from the turkey and the other traditional Thanksgiving stuff he had the previous night, there was the frustration of not going out with his girlfriend the night after. He was looking forward to seeing the new movie Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home that was being released that weekend. He and Jennifer were planning to see that for weeks. What was worse, she wasn't going be there that Saturday night when he and the Pinheads were going to perform at the Hill Street Coffee House. "What happened, Jen?" asked Marty. "We had a snowstorm here last night." explained Jennifer's voice, "We're all snowed in. The road's closed and everything." Marty began to be disappointed in hearing this. "Sorry to hear that." he said, "The movie, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was released today. We were planning to see that movie for weeks." "I know, Marty, I know." said Jennifer's voice. "And my performance tomorrow night at the coffee house with the Pinheads," said Marty, "I was hoping that you would be there." "I don't know what to say, Marty." said Jennifer's voice, "But, I'm sorry." "Well then," said Marty, "I'll see you Monday." "See you then." said Jennifer's voice, "Love you." After they both hung up, Marty went out to the dining room.

Breakfast was almost over when Marty recieved another phone call. It was from Doc Brown. "Doc." said Marty. "Marty." said Doc's voice, "I'm glad that you're home. Listen, I heard about Jennifer and I wanted cheer you up. I'm coming over to your place around 1:10 a.m. tonight." "One..." exclaimed Marty before he stopped himself in midspeach. Looking around, he saw that his family was still present. "One minute, Doc." said Marty. He stepped into his bedroom. "1:10 in the morning?" asked Marty. "Of course." said Doc's voice, "I'll bring the DeLorean with me." "DeLorean?" asked Marty, "You mean time traveling?" "Precisely." said Doc's voice, "I studied up of one of your favorite rock groups of the past. I think a little trip to their hometown would get your mind off of Jennifer." "Doc." said Marty, "You don't mean..." "Yes, Marty." said Doc's voice, "The Beatles." "The Beatles." said Marty, "As in Liverpool?" "Of course." said Doc, "You get to see the sights of the cities. The points of interest that influenced their music." "Like Eleanor Rigby." said Marty, "Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane." "Precisely." said Doc's voice. "Well then," said Marty, "I'll see you tonight." "Okay, Marty." said Doc, "Remember. 1:10 a.m. in the morning." After that, they both hung up. Coming back in the dining room, Lorraine asked him "Marty. What did Doc Brown want from you?" Not wanting to tell his mother about time traveling, he said "Not much." Marty looked into the den. There, on a wall was the framed newspaper article from 1965 with the headline reading

BEATLES SAVE CLOCK TOWER

It had the picture of all four Beatles pitching in to save the courthouse clock tower. It was ironic that the photo was taken the same day Jennifer's parents met. What was more ironic, Jennifer's mother was caught in the Beatles' hotel room and passed out. When she came through, the first thing she saw was her future husband, Jennifer's father. It was love at first sight. Later that night, the two went the Beatles' only Hill Valley concert. As for the article about the Beatles, George McFly won an award for it. It was strange. Before Marty first went back into time, George never won anything. Lorraine spoke up. "Marty." she said, "Did you know that I saw the Beatles first?" "Did you?" asked Marty. "Actually," said Lorraine, "it was 1957. For a while, me and George broke up. So I went to England as an exchange student. And I went to Liverpool for this rock festival and met John Lennon." "Hey mom, " said Marty, "back in 1957, they were called the Quarrymen. They're not called the Beatles until 1960." "I know, Marty." said Lorraine, "But then, I saw John Lennon before he came famous." "Mom." said Linda, "We've heard this story a thousand times now. You wanted to spend the rest of your life with him but he said he already had a girlfriend." "I'm glad for him, though." said Lorraine, "If it wasn't for that fact, I wouldn't have come home disappointed, and me and George would not have reconciled and none of you would ever been born." "What I still don't know is what was the fight between you and dad about?" asked Linda. "I was going over to his house to say my goodbye to him." said Lorraine, "And I caught him in the middle of the act of, what was it again George? Birdwatching?" "What Lorraine?" asked George. "I was so upset at him." said Lorraine, "I didn't even want to talk to him. Just leave. John's rejecting me was the best thing that happened to me. It showed me that there's someone for me to come crawling back too." Lorraine turned to see the disappointed look on Marty's face. "Marty, I'm sorry to bring up this subject." said Lorraine, "You've got to forget about Jennifer not being there for your performance tomorrow night. Just think of something else." "Don't worry, Mom." said Marty, "I will." After that, he went back to his room.

Marty got out through the window of his bedroom and walked to the front lawn. Just in time, the DeLorean appeared. The door opened and Doc said "Marty, get in." And he did. Doc set the "Destination Location" for Liverpool, England. "Ready Marty?" he asked. "Ready." was the response. "Time circuits activated." said Doc. "Time circuits activated." repeated Marty with a chuckle, "Doc, it's pretty hard to call them time circuits when we're just going from point 'A' to point 'B'." Just then, Marty noticed something. The "Destination Time" was set as well. It read :

JULY 6, 1957 6:00 a.m.

"1957?" exclaimed Marty. "Yep." said Doc, "July 6, 1957." "Uh, Doc..." explained Marty. "Marty." said Doc, "I've studied up on the Beatles. This is the date that Paul McCartney was introduced to John Lennon by a mutual friend. Sometimes that day, Paul will watch John perform and then later on, meet him backstage and perform 'Twenty Flight Rock' to him. That performance inspires John to have Paul join his band called the Quarrymen. And the rest is history." "Yeah, Doc." said Marty, "I know. But..." "Fasten your seatbelt, Marty." said Doc, "We're taking off." Marty did. The car lifted off, and started to accelerate. "Doc. Listen to me..." said Marty. "Marty." said Doc, "Whatever you say could wait awhile. Right now, brace yourself for temporal distortion." The digital speedometer read 88 and the field was flooded by bright lights and sonic booms.

Liverpool, England
6:00 a.m.

When they could see clearly again, they found themselves over an English seaport town. "Liverpool." said Doc, "A place of soccer teams and British comedians. I can't believe such a rock group would emerge from this town. It's incredible." "I know, Doc." said Marty, "It sounds heavy, but it happened." After activating the cloaking device, Doc looked for a place to land the DeLorean. He found one. An abandoned warehouse with a large hole in the roof, large enough to fit the car in. It was near a dock. Doc steered the car towards there and lowered it into the building. "Doc." said Marty, "There could be rats in here." Doc pushed a button near the time circuits and brilliant flashes of light illuminated the room. After he turned it off, he said "Not anymore." After landing the car, Doc and Marty got out. "Okay, Marty." said Doc, "In about eight hours, that festival will begin. We've got time to tour the city and explore the sights." Opening the trunk, he said "Help with this." Marty did. It was some sort of contraption. "It's my latest invention." said Doc, "It keeps rats out of the area it's in." "Far out." said Marty. After putting it on the floor, Doc flicked the switch. The machine made a low buzzing noise. "Now, let's go." he said and he and Marty left.

The first thing Doc and Marty went to was that Salvation Army orphanage called Strawberry Fields. Then, there was a stroll down Penny Lane. Finally ariving at a cementary, the two time travelers came across the grave of Eleanor Rigby. Marty found it hard to believe that some of their music came from such as these. Then, they stopped off at the Jacaranda, a coffee place where the Beatles would have their first gig in a few years. Inside, Doc and Marty ordered some refreshment. After Doc ordered something he wanted, the owner of the coffee bar asked Marty. Marty said "I'll have a Tab." "A tab?" exclaimed the owner, "Duckey. I can't give a tab unless you order something." "Okay." said Marty, "Give me a Pepsi Free." "Sonny Jim." said the owner, "If you want Pepsi you've got to pay for it." Marty looked at Doc. Then, turned to the owner saying "Just give me something without sugar in it." "Something without sugar." repeated the owner. He poured out a cup of coffee and gave it to him. Marty was ready to pay up when Doc stopped him. "I'll pay." said Doc. "Thank's Doc." said Marty. After paying up, Doc told Marty "I had the right currency for this country." "The right currency?" asked Marty. "Right." said Doc, "The monitary system here in England is different than it is in America." "Oh, I see." said Marty. Doc looked at his watch. "It's almost time." he said. "Time for what?" asked Marty. "For that festival." said Doc, "Com'on, Marty. We don't want to be late." "Hey Doc." said Marty, "There's something I'm trying to tell you." "Tell me when we get there." said Doc. They went to the Woolten Parish Church where the Quarrymen were playing. Arriving there, Marty finally told Doc. "Doc." he said. "Yes Marty." said Doc. "My mom came here to England on an exchange student program." said Marty, "She and dad broke up for a while." "She is?" asked Doc. "Yeah." said Marty, "She went over to dad's house to say goodbye before her trip abroad and caught him being a peeping tom. She's supposed to be here today." "Great Scott." said Doc. "She said she met John Lennon here and wanted to spend the rest of her life with him." said Marty. "Of course." said Doc, "It's the invunerability syndrome. Women feeling jilted or shocked about their loved ones are willing to throw their arms around any man to forget." Then, a voice was heard. "Calvin." it said, "Calvin Klein?" Doc and Marty turned to see Marty's future mother, Lorraine.
