Chapter 8

Seven and a half innings had gone by in the game with Ruth yet to homer. All the while, Doc and Marty looked at the Xerox copies that they brought with them from the future as well as the day’s newspaper. So far there was no change. Marty began to blame himself for drinking that potion that Doc had concocted. What if they never restore the timeline to it’s origial shape. What if they’re stuck on that altered timeline forever.

Then, in the bottom of the eighth inning, with left hander Bob Zachary on the mound for the Washington Senators, and a runner on base for the Yankees, Babe Ruth came to the plate. With Ruth swinging the bat, Zachary went to the stretch and threw. Ruth swung and connected. It was a fly ball to right. Back, back, back went the right fielder until he ran out of room. The right fielder looked up. It was gone! Ruth did it! It was number 60! With the crowd going wild, Doc and Marty looked at the copies of the stats and the 1927 newspaper article. Where it once read BABE RUTH DISAPPEARS now read

RUTH HITS 60

Where it read “Vaunted Yankee slugger vanishes without a trace.” now read “Vaunted Yankee slugger breaks own season record.” The two time travellers looked at the copie of the stats. It now read:

George Herman "Babe" Ruth
Born February 6, 1895. Died August 16, 1948

Looking at the sports section from 1987 it showed that the Pacific Coast League was gone. It only had National and American League with major league teams in the cities that had them before Doc and Marty went back in time. “It worked.” exclaimed Doc, “Ruth’s 60th home run of the year has set off a ripple effect in time. The future of Major League baseball has been restored.” “That’s great.” said Marty, “Let’s get our asses back to the future.” “My sentiments exactly.” said Doc. “Hey Doc.” said Marty, “What about your shift here?” “It’s over.” said Doc, “After it finished, I took the time machine back to the moment that you dropped off Ruth.” Marty paused. Then, he got it. Afterwords, they left the stadium, found the DeLorean that was still invisible, got in, set the time circuits for August 7, 1987 and the destination for San Francisco. Afterwords, the car lifted off and accelerated up to 88 miles per hour and through the time barrier.
