Chapter 7

Friday, September 30, 1927
New York City, New York
6:00 a.m.

AFTER the light dissipated, the two time travellers found themselves hovering over New York City. When Marty looked down, he could hardly believe that the last time he was here, he was in the year 1964 on a mission of mercy. But now he was in the New York City of 37 years earlier and once again it was up to him to restore the future to it’s original shape.

Doc stirred the car towards Yankee Stadium keeping it cloaked all the while. “The Yankee dugout is on the first base side.” he said as he flew the DeLorean over the rim of the stadium.

After the time machine landed, Doc and Marty got out, went into the dugout and down the tunnel to the clubhouse with Doc taking the sleep inducer just in case. Once in there, Doc whispered to Marty “Split up. We’ll find Ruth’s locker.” “Right Doc.” whispered Marty, “But why?” “Because there’s a chance that his home address is in there.” said Doc. “Check, Doc.” said Marty. They split up and looked

After finding it, the two time travellers found the address and Doc said “We’ll fly over to his place. When he comes out we’ll follow to whereever he goes.” “Right, Doc.” said Marty. Using a pencil and a piece of paper, Doc copied down the address. After that, the two time travellers left.

It was 7:00 a.m. when Ruth left the house. Overhead, Doc stealthfully guided the DeLorean to follow their prey until he went into an alleyway. Landing the car, Doc and Marty got out to look. They spotted a flight of steps going down to an underground place. Doc recognized this. “It’s a speakeasy.” he said. “A speakeasy?” asked Marty. “Yes.” said Doc, “As you know, this is the Prohibition Era. Alchohol is illeagle. The only place you could find a place to have a drink is usually a basement, celler, or any place that is beyond the knowledge of the law. That’s called a speakeasy.” “Okay, Doc.” said Marty, “What do we do?” “Follow me.” said Doc. Marty followed down the steps to a door that had something resembling a rectangle frame. Doc knocked on the door and something inside the frame moved revealing a top half of a man’s face. “Yes?” inquired the man behind the door. “Mugsy sent me.” said Doc. The door opened as the man said “Com’on in.” Doc entered followed by Marty. But as the man at the door stopped him, Doc said “He’s with me.” “Oh?” said the doorman, “He looks awfully young.” “Trust me.” said Doc, “He’ll behave himself.” After that, the doorman admitted Marty in. On their way to the bar, Marty asked “Hey Doc, where did you get that ‘Mugsy sent me’ statement?” “That’s how my dad got into these places during the ‘20’s.” said Doc. “Oh.” said Marty. This was an interesting story.

Doc and Marty were looking around for Ruth when the bartender asked “Can I help you?” Doc turned to him saying “Yes. I’m looking for Ru...” “I mean are you going to order somethins?” retorted the bartender. Both Doc and Marty paused for a second before Marty said “Yeah. Give me a Tab.” “Marty.” repremanded Doc, “We’re here to find Babe Ruth. Not to have a drink.” “Oh him.” said the bartender, “He’s right over there.” He indicated to a table in another room. There he was, Babe Ruth. “Com’on, Marty.” whispered Doc, “Let’s get him out of here.” “But how?” asked Marty. He was interrupted by a voice from behind that said “Hey McFly. I thought I told you never to come in here.” Doc and Marty turned to see who it was. It was Binford Tannen accompanied by three thugs. Binford took one long look at Marty before he said “Hey, you’re not Mark McFly. But you sure look familiar. Haven’t I seen you somewhere before?” “Mark McFly?” asked Doc whispering to Marty. “He’s a great uncle of mine.” said Marty, “My old man told me about him.” Binford approached the two time travellers asking “Well?” “Hey Binford.” said one his men, “Look.” He indicated to Babe Ruth. “Well, he’s here.” said Binford, “Excuse us guys, but I’ve got some unfinished business with an athlete.” He and his men approached the Babe. Marty turned to Doc saying “Doc, we’ve gotta do something.” “I know Marty.” said Doc. “We’ve gotta get Ruth away from those guys.” insisted Marty. “Marty.” said Doc, “We have to get him to Yankee Stadium across town let alone outrun Binford and his gang. The only means of doing that is with the DeLorean which is not in existance here in 1927.” “So what do we do?” asked Marty. “First of all,” said Doc, “we’ll have to get Ruth away from Binford.” “I think I’ve got an idea.” whispered Marty as he and Doc saw Binford and his gang escort Ruth out of the speakeasy. They were going pass Marty when he extended his leg to trip one of the four escorts. He did. It was Binford. He got to his feet and confronted Marty saying “Alright punk. You’ve asked for it now you’re...” Marty pointed towards the door saying “Cops.” The costomers got to their feet and started to find a way out. Binford looked around and as he did Marty let go a right cross. Seizing the opportunity, Doc produced his sleep inducer and rendered one of the gang unconscience. Then, Marty grabbed the last two gang members by the noggin and banged each others head. After that, Doc and Marty took Ruth and left.

Once outside, Doc picked up a garbage can and used it to block the door. Then, Marty whispered “What’s next, Doc.” Doc turned to pick up a board with wheels-like a skateboard and gave it to Marty. “Use this.” he said. Marty looked at it. Then, he looked at Ruth. Then, turning to Doc, he whispered “Are you sure it’s sturdy enough for both of us.” “Marty.” whispered Doc, “I tested something like that with thing that were twenty times heavier than Ruth. It’s sturdy.” After one more look at Ruth, Marty whispered back at Doc saying “You’re the doc, Doc.” “Alright, Marty.” said Doc, “I’ll meet you at Yankee Stadium.” At that moment, the garbage can fell over and the door opened. “Go Marty.” said Doc. Taking Ruth by the arm, he got him on the huge skateboard. Then, hopped on it himself and skated out onto the street.

Once Marty and the Babe were gone, Doc hopped into the DeLorean and lifted off to Yankee Stadium. Once the car was gone, Binford and his gang made it to the top of the stairs and out the alleyway after their prey.

Marty looked back to see Binford and his gang gaining on the duo. Then, spotting a truck Marty told Ruth “Hold on to me tight.” “Wait a minute, kid...” said Ruth, “Hey don’t I know you from some...” He was interrupted when Marty latched onto the truck causing Ruth to grab a hold of Marty. Binford and his gang ran passed them. Before long, the four of them were shrinking in the distance.

Undismayed, Binford and his gang headed to their cars, got in and drove off. Within minutes, they caught up with their prey and started banging them. The boy on the huge board on wheels swerved to the side avoiding the bumping and banging that Binford was inflicting on the truck. Then, the boy let out a yell and let go of the truck. Apparently, he was about to hit someone getting out of the car.

After swipe-stepping the driver, Marty did a high hurdle over a hedge with Ruth hanging onto him all the while. Landing on the other side, they collided with some office workers going to work. After, getting to their feet, Marty and Ruth hopped back onto the oversized skate board as the car carrying Binford and his gang came burrowing down the sidewalk after them. Marty and Ruth managed to skate back onto the street before the pursuing car caught up to them. With Ruth hanging onto him again, Marty put his hand on the hood of the car as Binford and his gang started throwing bottles at them. Then, Marty looked behind him and saw a parked manure truck. Taking Ruth by the hand, Marty jumped onto the hood, then the roof, finally the hood of the trunk before hopping back onto the board.

In the car, Binford looked behind them disbelieving the fact that their prey is suddenly behind them. Binford turned back to the wheel to turn the car around only to see that they were about to crash into a manure truck. “Shit” they cried out as the car crashed into the mess.

Marty paused as he saw a crowd surround the pile of manure burying the car. Then, he and Ruth saw Binford and his gang being pulled out of the pile as Binford cried out “Manure! I hate manure.” Immediately, Marty flagged down a cab. “Com’on , Ruth.” he said, “Let’s get to Yankee Stadium.” “Now wait a minute.” said Ruth, “Who are you?” “No time for questions.” insisted Marty as the cab pulled over, “We’ve gotta get you to your game.” After getting in, Marty said “Yankee Stadium.” “My sentiments exactly!” said the cabbie. Marty recognized the voice. “Doc?” he asked. The cabbie turned around to Marty to reveal the fact that it was indeed the Doc. “You never knew that I had another job.” he said, “At times I moonlight as a cab driver in 1927 New York.” “Far out.” said Marty. “Not really.” said Doc, “I only do this on weekends.” He pulled out to the street. Next stop: Yankee Stadium.

In the car, Marty asked Ruth “Hey Babe, why the hell did you go to that speakeasy on a day like this?” “I received a call this morning to meet someone there.” explained Ruth, “I didn’t know it was Tannen.” Then, turning to Marty he asked “Don’t I know you from somewhere?” Marty shrugged. Then, he said “Yeah, I think so.” Marty was spared the explanation of having to have met him before in 1917 when the cab pulled up outside the stadium. “Here’s the place.” said Doc. “Great, Doc.” said Marty, “Just great.” They pulled up outside the Yankee clubhouse and Ruth got out. Marty followed but was stopped by a guard. “Sorry sir.” he said, “Coaches and players only.” “But you see...” said Marty. He was interrupted by a tap on the shoulder. It was the Doc. “That’s alright.” he said. Whispering to Marty, he said “We got tickets.” Marty looked at Doc’s hands. They were tickets. “That’s great, Doc.” whispered Marty back, “But why?” “To witness history.” said Doc. He showed Marty the copies of the newspaper arcticle and the statistics. Marty said “Oh yeah.” “Com’on, Marty.” said Doc, “Let’s go to the gate.” They turned and headed to the turnstile.
