WHEN it dissipated, Doc and Marty found themselves in the interior of a refrigerator. Doc pushed another button and the door opened. Getting out, the two found themselves at the laboratory of Dr. E. Brown Enterprises. A sound of a chimpanzee was heard. It was Shemp. Thats alright, Shemp. said Doc, Its just me and Marty. You remember Marty dont you. The monkey bobbed his head upside down. Hey Shemp. said Marty. The chimpanzee acknowledged Martys greeting. Then, turning to where he came from, Marty said Its a transporter refrigerator. Yes it is. said Doc, It was also a prototype for the time machine. Was it? asked Marty. Of course. said Doc, But that was before the DeLorean came out. Marty examined it very closely. It had a laser-light device on it. It also had a lever there, and plus and minus signs for it to be pushed too. Far out. he said. Meanwhile, Doc went over to look at Shemp. How are you holding out, Shemp? he asked. Marty turned to look. Whats with Shemp? he asked. Oh, I tried the serum out on him earlier this afternoon. said Doc as he picked up his catchers mitt, Lets see how hes doing now. Leading Shemp to a part of the lab where it had a resemblance to a baseball diamond, Doc told Marty Pick up my radar gun on my workbench. Marty did. Point it at Shemp. said Doc as Shemp stood in a circle resembling a pitchers mound. Marty did. Doc crouched down behind a marker resembling home plate and said Watch this. Making some hand signals like a catcher Doc held out the mitt expecting a pitch from Shemp. Shemp threw the ball. It mad a very fast line to the mitt. There was a digital sign on the far wall of the diamond and it read 121. Marty. asked Doc, What does the indicator on the wall say? 121. said Marty. Doc got up and looked at it. Great Scott. he said, Its taking longer to wear off than I anticipated. Which means my chances for performing aint good. said Marty. Dont give up hope yet. said Doc, All we have to do is transport Shemp to a deserted island where theres nothing but bananas and go ahead in time to see how long itll last. Youre the doc, Doc. said Marty. Doc picked up Shemp and went to the refrigerator. Doc. he said, Youre going to transport Shemp in that? Of course. said Doc, Comon. Realizing that Doc wanted Marty to come along, he complied. After Marty got in with Shemp, Doc went over to the Coke machine, deposited 50 cents and a coke can came out. Opening it, Doc took a sip and went back to the refrigerator and turned a knob. It was a lid to the inside and Doc poured the Coke into the opening. Then closing it up, Doc got in, opened the thermonitor like a door showing some circuits similar to the Destination Location in the DeLorean. It also had a map similar to the locator map in the time machine. After I came back to my own time with my family, said Doc, I added this to the refrigerator. Thats great, Doc. said Marty as Doc pushed a few buttons and the words South Pacific lit up and a rectangular screen. The locator map show the South Pacific Ocean and Doc used the indicator arrow to point to one of the islands. I know this island very well. said Doc, Me, Clara and my family used to spend summers there. When was this? asked Marty. After I installed the Destination Location in the time circuits. said Doc, I scouted the island first, then found it suitably habitable. Even to this day, most of the vegetation is undisturbed. Picking up the radar gun, a baseball and a net backstop, Doc got in saying Well, were ready to go now. He was ready to close the door when he said Oh, I almost forgot. He got out and went over to the workbench to pick up his remote saying Ive got to bring this along with me. How can I open the door without it? I must be out of my mind. Closing the door, Doc pushed the button. Both of you brace yourselves. he said, Its gonna be a bumpy ride. Pulling a lever, the refrigerator vibrated. When the shaking stopped, Doc used the remote to open the door. Getting out, Marty looked around. It was indeed like paradise complete with palm trees and assorted fruits and vegetables. Talk about Shagra-la whistled Marty. Marty, help me set up this equipment. said Doc. Right Doc. said Marty as he started to help Doc.
It was almost a half an hour when every was all set. The equipment consisted of the radar gun, the speed indicator, and the backstop net. Turning on the gun, Doc said Okay Shemp, start throwing. Shemp did. The monkee was still throwing at 122 miles per hour. Then, Doc turned to Marty saying Okay Marty. Lets get back to the refrigerator. Shocked, Marty turned to Doc saying Doc, were not gonna leave Shemp here. Of course we are. said Doc, Dont worry, Marty. Theres enough food to last him indefinitely. And how is this gonna tell us how long that stuffs gonna last? asked Marty. By going ahead in time. said Doc. Okay, Doc. said Marty. We go back to Hill Valley, get into the DeLorean and... Not that way. said Doc. He motioned to Marty to get back to the refrigerator. Marty was about to get in when Doc said Stay here and close the door. But Doc... said Marty. Just hold onto the refrigerator. said Doc. Marty did. And as he did, he said Doc are you sure... But Doc was busy pulling the lever that was attached to the refrigerator. Pushing it to the plus sign, weird things started happening. The sun started to rise and set at an incredible rate. Doc! exclaimed Marty. Isnt this wonderful? said Doc smilingly, Its intoxicating. You did turn it into a time machine. commented Marty. Precisely. said Doc, After all, it is a prototype. Doc... said Marty as he was about to let go. Hey. said Doc, Hang on to the refrigerator. Dont let go until I tell you too. Marty held on tight saying Right Doc. Meanwhile, Doc was looking over to where Shemp was throwing the baseball. With time moving forward, the chimpanzee was a blur. But Doc was able to read out the indicator. Then gradually, the indicator showed signs that the speed on the monkeys pitches were slowing down. Doc pulled the lever down and looked out at the monkey. His pitches were barely making the net now. Shemp you, devil. said Doc, Did you miss me? The chimp nodded affirmatively. He still had his sense of humor. Doc. said Marty, How long did it take? Oh yeah. said Doc. He turned to refrigerator and looked at some more circuits. Turning to Marty, he said Two months. he said. Two months? exclaimed Marty, Does that mean I have to wait that long? Unfortunately yes. said Doc, Comon, Marty. Lets collect all this stuff and get back. Him and Marty did.
After everything was collected and stored into the refrigerator, Doc, Marty and Shemp got into the refrigerator. But Doc set the circuits for the other side of the island. Doc. exclaimed Marty, What are you doing? I thought were going home. We are, Marty. said Doc, But first we have to transport to a different spot. Then, Ill get out and pull the lever to go back to a point in time before we showed up on the island. Remember, we went into the future. Oh yeah, Doc. said Marty, I forgot. Afterwards. Well transport back to Hill Valley and figure out what to do with your situation. Marty shrugged. Youre the doc, Doc. At that, Doc got in, closed the door and pushed a few buttons. The refrigerator start vibrating again. Then, using the remote, Doc got out and closed the door. Then, more vibrations were felt. Then, the door opened and Doc said It will be a matter of minutes before our other selves show up. Setting the Destination Location for Hill Valley and the map locator for the Dr. E. Brown Enterprises, Doc listened for the first refrigerator. When a noise was heard, Doc said Okay. Thats our cue. He pushed the button and the vibration started up again. When it ceased. Doc used the remote and got out. They were back in the Dr. E. Brown Enterprises building. Marty looked at the time. It still said that he had less than a half an hour before hes on. This baffled him. Then, he realized that hes been traveling through time. Turning to Doc, he asked Doc. What about me? I might have to send you somewhere back in time for a couple of months. said Doc, I dont think you could adapt to a deserted island like Shemp did. Got any ideas? asked Marty. Well, theres this resort that my family had in Winter Haven, Florida. said Doc, It was left to me in my fathers will when he died but I sold it when I started in on my time travel experiments. But in 1917, its all brand new and wont be occupied until summer that year. All we have to do is to go over to my place get into the DeLorean and go back in time. Doc. said Marty, How are we going to get to your place from here? Your cars still at Candlestick Park. Just get back into the refrigerator and transport ourselves there. Marty turned to the refrigerator and said Of course. Turning to Shemp, Doc said Take care Shemp. And remember, if theres any problems here, let me know. The chimp bounced his head up-and-down as if to say yes. After that, Doc and Marty got into the refrigerator. Once inside, Doc set the map locator for his house on Elmdale Lane and pushed the button on the remote. The blue light engulfed the two as before and when it dissipated, they found themselves in the lab of Docs house. Whoa! said Marty, Hey Doc, hows Shemp going to let you know if theres trouble.? He has knowledge on how to push an alert button that buzzes my pager. Doc produced the pager to Marty to see. I see. he said. Now for the business at hand. said Doc. He went over to the closet containing period clothing and gave Marty the clothing that he would need to blend in with the style of the time. Put it on, Marty. he said. Marty looked at it and said Are you sure thats what they wore during the 1910s? Of course, Marty. said Doc. Marty shrugged. Then, he said Youre the doc, Doc. Then, he turned and went into the bathroom to change. Meanwhile, Doc went over to the DeLorean and prepare for time travel.
