Chapter 5

RIGHT after Tannen and his men left, Doc, Marty, Seamus, Maggie and the witnesses approached the wounded Marshall Tannen. Then, a voice was heard. "Paw." it said. It was Tannen's son. He ran to his dying father who said to him "Remember son what I said." "I know, paw." said the teary young Strickland, "Never give my opponent an inch. And maintain discipline at all time." "That's right, son." said Marshall Strickland, "Discipline." After that, he expired. The townspeople took their hats off for mourning and respect. Marty felt sick. Not only was Jennifer kidnapped but Mr. Strickland's great grandfather was murdered. Then, Clara showed up. "Emmett." she asked, "How long will it be before Jennifer regains her memory? The word about you is getting out." "Clara." said Doc, "Not now, Clara." said Doc, "We have more problems on our hands." "But Emmett." said Clara, "What's worse than what I had to go through today?" "Tell me." said Doc. "Today. We were discussing Julius Caesar and Young Strickland made a crack about Caesar's wife time traveling with a 'scientist and a kid'." "What?" exclaimed Marty. "Marty." said Clara, "You act like it really happened." "Believe me, ma'am." said Marty, "It did." "What did, Marty?" asked Doc. "You'll find out, Doc." said Marty, "Months after you and your family move back to the future to live there." "That's not all." said Clara, "Mark Twain and H.G. Wells visited the school house today. They were asking questions about you and that time..." Clara was indicating the building in which the DeLorean was housed and noticed some military soldiers guarding it. "Emmett." she said, "What's going on." "Military soldiers." said Doc, "Buford Tannen has escaped and rode into town." "Oh dear." said Clara. "That's not all." said Marty, "He's kidnapped Jennifer." "Oh no." said Clara. Then, she noticed a crowd near the hospital. "Marshall Strickland." said Doc, "As he was making off with Jennifer, Buford shot and killed Strickland." "Oh my God." exclaimed Clara, "And I sent his son home today for that wisecrack he made." "He's over there." said Doc, "With his father." Clara saw that and said "I'll go over to tell him how sorry I am." At that, she left. Then, Marty turned to Doc saying "Doc. About Jennifer." "Marty." said Doc, "We've got to let the law handle this." "But Doc," said Marty, "Tannen said..." "I know what Tannen said." interrupted Doc, "But he's using her as a bargaining chip. Our lives for hers. Do you know what he's going to do if we show up?" "I don't care." said Marty, "I just want Jennifer back and get the hell outta here." "He's going to kill us." said Doc. Marty gave Doc a startled stare. "That's right, Marty." said Doc, "And after that Jennifer. You see, Marty. He's wants our blood, then after that, kill Jennifer just to keep her quiet." "Oh shit!" said Marty. "I'm sorry, Marty." said Doc, "We'll have to talk to the sheriff now about arranging a search for her. After that, we'll go to the saloon for another Sasparella." Somberly, Marty turned and followed Doc to the sheriff's office.

After Tannen and his men returned to his hideout with their captive. Buford had the girl tied up. Then, he wrote a note and gave it to one of his men to take into town. After that man did, the girl asked "What are you going to do with me?" "Do?" asked Tannen, "I'm gonna get mushy with you." He got into her face causing her to smell his stinking breath. "Get away from me." she demanded. "In time." said Tannen, "In time." The girl reeled back in fright.

After a seeing the sheriff, Doc and Marty returned to the saloon. Sitting at the bar, Marty said "Doc, I don't understand it. 'Clint Eastwood' is dead. Why would he still want 'him' as well as you?" "Buford Tannen doesn't know that." said Doc, "And right now, he's out for revenge. You for landing him in jail and me over a matter of eighty dollars. As for Jennifer, he needs her alive to assure him of our cooperation. Kill her now, and we retaliate." Marty gave Doc a helpless look. He turned to his Sasparella and noticed a glass of whiskey. Doc was having Sasparella in a glass simular to that. Setting his sights on the saloon door, Marty said "They've captured Tannen!" Doc turned to look. As he did, Marty switched the glasses. "I'm sorry, Doc." said Marty, "False alarm." Doc turned back saying "That's alright, Marty." He picked up his glass and took a sip. "Whiskey!" he exclaimed and passed out. Like the bartender said, there's a man who can't handle his liquor. "Like I said." said Marty, "I'm sorry, Doc. But I don't agree with you on that subject." After that, he got up and left the saloon.

Outside, Marty encountered a group of men dragging in one of their own. Then, Marty recognized the man they were dragging in. It was one of Buford's men. "Hey Eastwood." he said, "Buford said if you want to see that girl of yours alive again, you're to go with that blacksmith friend of yours and meet him at the manure dump." Marty turned to find a horse when he bumped into the sheriff. "Mr. Eastwood." he said, "You'd better let us handle this." "I wish I could." said Marty, "But I have to handle this on my own." "Mr. Eastwood." insisted the sheriff, "You don't know what trouble you're in. Buford Tannen is the most deceitful man on the earth." "I know what I'm doing." said Marty. Then a cry was heard in the saloon. Turning around, they could see Doc clutching his throat and dunking his head in the horse troth. Apparently, the bartender fixed him that wake-up juice that was used back in September. Realizing that all eyes were on the Doc, Marty saw his chance and ran to the nearest horse, jumped on and rode off.

Ten minutes later, Doc's head cleared. "Damn." he said, "That was a dirty trick that Mar..." looking around, there were people listening in. "...Clive Eastwood pulled." he continued to say, "Damn. What a headache. I sure miss Tylenol." "What's Tylenol?" asked one of the bystanders. Clara came in saying "There you are Emmett. I just took young Strickland home." Looking around, she whispered to Doc "Where's Marty?" Doc looked around "Marty!" he exclaimed, "Great Scott." Studying the glass and sniffing it he said "He switched drinks with me so he could go find Jennifer." "Oh no." said Clara. "I've got to go find him." said Doc as he and Clara left the bar. Turning to Clara, he said "Stay here. I've got to go find Marty by myself." "But Emmett..." said Clara as Doc headed for a horse. "I'm sorry, Emmett." said a voice. It was the sheriff's. "One foolish person is already going over there." he said, "I can't risk another civilian. You'd better let the law handle this." "You don't understand." said Doc. "Yes I do." said the sheriff, "You just stay here in town and if we find ever find them, we'll put in a good word for you." The sheriff called some of his men, mounted horses and left. Doc stood there with Clara, unable do anything. "Maybe we could help." said a voice. It was Mark Twain and H.G. Wells. "What can you do?" asked Doc. "Advice, my friend." said Twain, "Advice." "What kind of advice?" asked Doc. "Do you have any friends in the future that could help you?" asked Twain. "What kind of friends?" asked Doc. "Friends who know about your time travels." said Twain. Clara spoke up. "The only friends in future he knows is here in 1885." she said. "Not necessarily." said Doc, "We've got ourselves in the future." "But Emmett." said Clara, "How are you going back to the future? The time machine is under tight security." Then, H.G. Wells spoke up. "Have you ever read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?" he asked. "Of course." said Doc, "It was written by Jules Verne. Me and Clara's favorite author. But what does that have to do with trying to get back to the future?" "Just answer this." said Wells, "How did Mr. Land inform the Navy about the Nautalis?" "Of course." said Doc, "Messages in bottles. I remember having Western Union keep a letter for Marty to open in 1955. Now, if I recall he told me that during the next ten or eleven years I would be building another time machine-out of a train. I saw that and a limosine in my future lab." Turning to Clara, he said "If I could send a message to our future selves to help out, they could come in the one of the other two machines." "And take get them out of here?" asked Clara, "What about your DeLorean?" "Apparently, my future self has developed something that would help. Look at the advancements that he-I mean I have made on it. I could make it invisible. Perhaps I installed a switch on the remote control I used when I made my first temporal experiment." "Well then, what are we standing around here waiting for?" asked Twain, "Let's start writing." At that, they went over to Doc's stable home to do so.

Marty arrived at the manure dump. But, there was no one around. "Com'on Tannen." insisted Marty, "I'm here. Where are you." It was either a wild goose chase or the wrong manure dump. Turning back, he heard a voice say "Freeze Eastwood." Marty turned. It was Tannen and his men. In his arms was Jennifer, with a gun pointed at her head. "Let her go, you bastard." said Marty. "The deal was you and the blacksmith." said Tannen, "Not just yourself." "He's not coming." said Marty. "He'd better come." said Tannen, "Or I'll blow this girl's head off." Marty stood there looking helplessly at Jennifer.

The girl felt terror as the gunman had a gun pointed at her mouth. Then, some clicked inside Where have I experienced this before? she asked herself. Then, she heard the youth called Eastwood say "Let her go, you bastard." In her mind's eye, she could see a jar with something in it ready to be poured into her mouth. An then the name Marty began to flash into her head. "Marty." she blurted. All of the sudden, she started to remember who she was, what happened before the accident, who "Eastwood" really is, and how to handle a hostage situation.

Marty heard Jennifer blurt out his name. And then, he saw her bite Buford on the arm. Crying out in pain, Tannen dropped his gun, released her and started rubbing the teeth marks. Jennifer picked up the gun and trained it on Buford. "I know who I am now." said Jennifer. "Later, Jen." said Marty as he addressed Tannen's gang members. "Okay you guys." he said, "Let us go our way or your boss gets it." "Do what he says." said Tannen. Then men lowered their weapons and stood down. Riding his horse up to Jennifer, Marty picked her up and rode off.

Tannen had one more card to play however. Reaching into his hat, he produced his small one-bullet gun and shot Jennifer in the back. As she fell off the horse, Tannen said "I told you she'd get it. Are you satisfied?" Marty looked in horror as Jennifer laid on the ground. His girlfriend was dying.
