Chapter 4

AFTER arriving at his hiding place, Buford Tannen found his own clothes and put them on. Then, called his gang to a meeting. "Okay." he said, "We go into town and finish our business with that no good blacksmith." "Alright, Buford." said his gang. After that, they got on their horses and rode off to town.

The girl was listening in on the conversation with the soldiers guarding her. However, one of the men didn't dress like a soldier. But he did look familiar. And then, something went on in the back of her head. There was a word she started to remember. The word was "detention". Where did I hear that word before? she told herself. Then, she heard one of the soldiers call him Marshall Strickland. Strickland. she said to herself, The name's familiar. But where did I hear that name before? After that, the one called Strickland left.

Doc and Marty looked on hopelessly as they saw the soldiers guarded the building housing the DeLorean. "Doc." whispered Marty, "If those soldiers are still there after Jennifer regained her memory, shouldn't we use the DeLorean in the Del Gado mine?" "Out of the question." said Doc, "That DeLorean is there for you to pick up in 1955." "Just a suggestion, Doc." said Marty. "A bad suggestion, Marty." said Doc. Going back to the saloon, Marty came across a little boy, about nine, writing down something. This sight reminded Marty of his father. "What are you writing?" Marty asked the boy. "About Alaska." said the boy, "When I grow up, I'm going to write stories about wildlife." "Lot's of luck, uh...." said Marty, "What's your name?" "London." said the boy, "Jack London." Marty was taken by surprise by this answer. "Jack London?" he asked, "Geez, you wrote Call of the Wild." The boy stared blankly at Marty who said "I mean, you're going to write Call of the Wild. It's one of my fav..." "Marty." whispered Doc, "Let's go." "Right, Doc." said Marty, "Hey Jack, see you later. Much later." Upon leaving, Marty said "Doc. That's Jack London-as a kid." "I know Marty." said Doc, "He's here in Hill Valley to visit his relatives and to see the legendary Mark Twain." "Speaking of which..." said Marty. He indicated the general direction of Marshall Strickland. Doc looked. Strickland was talking to Mark Twain. "This is nuts." said Marty, "We've got to talk to someone to get that guy off of everyone's ass." "That's not easy, Marty." said Doc, "Who wants to discourage a great man like him?" "You've got a point, Doc." said Marty. "We could go to the mayor's office, but I doubt he could help us." said Doc. After that, they went there.

Mark Twain and Marshall Strickland were in conversation about yesterday. "Mr. Twain..." said Strickland. "Clemens." retorted Twain, "Samuel Clemens. Mark Twain is..." "Whatever." said Strickland, "As I was saying, I've got enough problems on my hands with Buford Tannen in on the loose. Whatever knowledge I have about the town blacksmith will have to wait." "But Emmett Brown is no blacksmith." insisted Twain, "He's a scientist. An inventor. That thing that the military is guarding is a time machine." "In my spare time, Mr. Clemens." said Strickland, "In my spare time. Now why don't you just mosey on home." Perturbed, Twain left Strickland.

Knowing that Clara was teaching class today, Twain started to head there. On his way, he felt like he was being followed. Turning around, he spied someone hiding in the bushes. Going over there, he said "Mr. Wells." The Englishman came out of the bushes saying "My dear sir. How did you know it was me?" "Who else would be fascinated about that time machine in there?" demanded Twain. He noticed that Wells had a notepad in his hand. "What in tarnation are you writing, young man?" he asked. "Stories." said Wells, "Science fiction stories. About time traveling, creatures from Mars, invisible people and things. That incident yesterday had somehow got me started. I'm taking storywriting classes at Oxford." "I'm going to give you a firsthand look at an apparent time traveler." said Twain. He took him to Clara's schoolhouse.

Tannen and his gang were on the outskirts of town when they looked in. There were soldiers guarding one of the bigger buildings. "What do you think it is, boss?" asked one of his men. "That's what I would like to know." said Buford, "You guys sneak into town and steal a newspaper." "Right, boss." said the gang. At that, the men left Buford and went into town.

Clara was teaching class when she got a surprise visit. "Mr. Twain." she said, "I mean, Clemens. I'm honored." "The honor is all mine." said Twain who was accompanied by H.G. Wells. "Class." said Clara, "This is Samuel Clemens. Known as Mark Twain." The class applauded. "Thank you, class." said Twain, "I'll bet you've got a lot of questions about me." "Mr. Twain." asked one of the students, "Can I have one of your cigars?" "When you're old enough." said Twain. The class laughed. Another student asked "Who's the kid?" "This young man", said Twain, "is called Herbert George Wells. He's from England." "Hey Mr. Wells." said one of the students, "We dumped your king hundreds of years ago." "Over a hundred years." said Clara reprimanding that student. "Hey Mr. Twain." asked another student, "How's Tom Sawyer these days?" "He's doing fine." assured Twain. "How about Huck Finn?" asked another. "Buy the book." insisted Twain producing a copy of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. "Mr. Twain." said Clara, "I hope you don't mind, but I'm teaching class. Would you wish to sit in?" "Of course." said Twain. Sitting in the back with Wells, Twain listened in. "Now today, we're going to discuss Julius Caesar." said Clara, "What do you know about him?" "He was a general and a statesman." said one student. "He conquered England and France." said another. "They were called Britain and Gaul in those days." corrected Clara. "Oh." said another student, "He was involved with Cleopatra who later hanged out with Mark Antony." There was a general laugh. "Alright class." said Clara, "Settle down now." "He was murdered by his friends because he was trying to change the government." said another student. "That's right." said young Strickland, "And his wife took off in a time machine with a scientist and a kid." "Excuse me, Mr. Strickland?" demanded Clara. "You heard me, Miss Clayton." said young Strickland, "And the scientist looked like your fiance, that blacksmith boyfriend of yours." "Mr. Strickland." said Clara, "You're dismissed. Go home." At that, the boy left. After that the class continued, but deep down inside, Clara had the feeling that this whole affair with Jennifer and the DeLorean was starting to get out of hand. And having Mark Twain and H.G. Wells in that classroom was no help at all.

Buford's gang returned with a newspaper. The headlines read:

GIRL IN STRANGE SHIP CRASHES ON PEABODY'S FARM

"What the hell?" exclaimed Tannen, "Hey, there aint no mention about my escape." "That's not all." said one of his men, "Read the article about the girl." Tannen did. "It says that this girl is suffering from anemia." he said. "That's amnesia." said one of his men, "Like she don't know who she is." "What's so interesting about her?" demanded Tannen. "We overheard someone say that the blacksmith and a friend of his were talking to her earlier today." "Who's the friend?" asked Tannen. "You're not going to believe it." said one of his men. "Try me." said Tannen. "Clint Eastwood." said the same man. "Clint Eastwood?" exclaimed Tannen. "That's right." said that same man, "Clint Eastwood. I thought he was dead." "He's back from the dead." said Tannen, "And that hussy is involved with him." Turning to his men, he said "If we could kidnap that girl and get Eastwood to follow us. We could use her to get him to get that no good cheating blacksmith, we've got it made." "How are we going to do that, boss?" asked one of his men, "Those soldiers are guarding the hospital as well." "Well then, we'll sneak back into town, knock out some of the soldiers and take their uniform." said Tannen. Him and the entire gang agreed in unison.

When the last class was over, Clara went over to the two men. "Well, Mr. Clemens. What brings you here. You and your young friend." "We want to know about your fiance, Emmett Brown." said Twain. "We're much in love." said Clara, "We were going to get married yesterday." "I know." said Twain, "I was there. And so was Mr. Wells. It was strange that he called it off and you agreed after that thing came out of the sky yesterday." "What is that supposed to mean?" demanded Clara. "How much you know about Emmett Brown?" demanded Twain. "He's a blacksmith." said Clara, "And he has an interest in all sciences." "Because he is a scientist." said Twain, "And you know about it all along." Twain got up and walked around as he was talking. Then, he came across Clara's desk. And opened a drawer. "Mr Clemens." said Clara, "Please don't." "Oh." said Twain, "You have something to hide." Reaching in, he pulled out the wooden model of the DeLorean she discovered in the stable on that September day. Twain read it saying "'Time Machine'? Obviously this is not an apple given by a student." "Mr. Clemens." said Clara, "I'd think you should leave. You and your young friend." "Okay, Miss Clayton." said Twain, "We'll leave. But I'm not going to rest until I get to the bottom of this." At that, the two left. Clara was now more terrified at this more than ever.

After leaving the mayor's office, Doc and Marty ran into Seamus and Maggie McFly. "Mr. Eastwood." exclaimed Seamus, "I thought..." "Actually," said Marty, "I'm his twin brother Clive." "Well then, I'm sorry to hear about your brother Clint." said Seamus. "Thank's Mr..." said Marty. "McFly." said Seamus, "Seamus McFly. This is me wife, Maggie." "Ma'am." said Marty tipping his hat. "Hello, Mr. Eastwood." said Maggie, "You're a spitting image of your brother." "Why thanks, ma'am." said Marty. "Mr. Brown." said Seamus, "You've got to do something about Mark Twain. He's been asking around about you." "I know." said Doc. "He came to our house today and asked me about Clint Eastwood." said Maggie, "And that poor girl in the hospital." Doc and Marty look at each other. Deep down inside, this madness that Mark Twain is causing has got to stop.

After knocking out the soldiers and stealing their uniforms, Buford and his men put them on. And then, they went to the hospital posing as relief soldiers. "Okay guys. We're here to replace you." said one of Buford's men. "What's the password?" asked the soldiers. Buford and his gang looked at each other. And then, they turned on the guards fast and a knocked them out. "You stay here." said Buford to one of his men and he did. Sneaking around they saw a soldier standing around the girl. That had to be the girl in the space ship. Buford got one of his men to go over and "relieve" that soldier. The man did. "Relieving you." he said. "Where's your orders?" asked the soldier. "Right behind you." said Buford who knocked him out. The girl got up terrified. "Okay, hussy." said Buford, "You and I are going for a ride." Pulling her out of bed Tannen had a gun pointed at her head. "Okay everyone." said Buford, "Don't nobody stop us or she gets it." The doctor, nurses and some of the soldiers coming in to stop the kidnappers backed away. The amnesiac was dragged kicking and screaming out the door.

Doc and Marty were continuing their conversation with Seamus and Maggie when a commotion was heard inside the hospital. A looking around, they saw men in uniform dragging Jennifer out of the hospital and onto a horse. "Jennifer." said Marty. "Oh my God." gasped Maggie, "It's Buford Tannen." "Great Scott." said Doc. Both him and Marty hid behind the two McFlys. Buford and his gang also got onto some horses as well. "Alright everyone." demanded Tannen, "You people find me Clint Eastwood and his no good cheating blacksmith friend of his. Or she get's it." He had a gun pointed at Jennifer's head. Mashall Strickland came out of his office to see what was the matter. Seeing this, Tannen turned to him saying "Hey Marshall. Take that!" He pulled his gun from Jennifer and shot Strickland. The marshall fell to the ground. After that, the quarry and their captive rode off into woods as Doc and Marty looked on to hopeless to do anything about it.
