Chapter 3

Ben Lomond, California
6:30 p.m.
THE Brown family had finished their dinner when the phone rang. "It must be Marty." said Doc to Clara, "I left him the phone number to our cottage in case there's an emergency." Doc went in to answer it but Jules was there already. "Dad." he said "It's Jennifer." "Jennifer?" exclaimed Doc. What happened to Marty? he asked himself as he took to receiver from Jules. "Yes?" he said. "Doctor Brown." said Jennifer's voice. There was some distress in her voice. "Thank God I found you." her voice went onto say, "Listen. I've got trouble. Marty's back in 1978 and he's being chased by Jim Jandick." Doc was shocked. What was Marty doing in 1978 and how did Jennifer know about it? "Jennifer." said Doc, "Are you saying that Marty's back in time right now?" "Yes." replied Jennifer's voice. "There's one thing that doesn't make sense, Jennifer." said Doc, "If Marty's being chased by Jim Jandick in 1978, how did you know about it?" "It was my idea." said Jennifer, "He had a run-in with the present Jim Jandick over his wife today and I hoped I'd get his mind off of Jan's problems by taking him back in time to our own first meeting." "Jennifer." said Doc, "Not another word. What time machine did you use?" "The DeLorean." said Jennifer's voice. "Well get back into the DeLorean and fly over here right now." "Doctor Brown." said Jennifer's voice, "Ben Lomond's 143 miles away from here. It'll take almost two hours for me to get there." "Just set the 'Destination Location' for Ben Lomond, California and it'll bring you there in an instant." "Okay, Doctor Brown." said Jennifer, "I'm in here right now setting the location right now." "Okay, you've got the address of our cottage with you. Don't you?" said Doc. "Yes, Doctor Brown." said Jennifer's voice. "Set the map for the street of the cottage, and make sure that the DeLorean is invisible when it appears." said Doc. "Okay Doctor Brown." said Jennifer. "Now load Mr. Fusion again and get over here." said Doc. "Roger, Doctor Brown." said Jennifer, "See you in a minute." "Okay." said Doc, "I'll see you then." After that, both phones hung up. Looking up at Clara, he said "Marty's in trouble. I might have to go back in time to save him." "Oh dear." said Clara. "I know." said Doc, "Let's make sure the back yard is clear for when the DeLorean arrives." With a help from the boys, Doc moved the chairs and picnic table to a side. Minutes later, two sonic booms were heard, followed by two flashes of light. Doc looked up. There was Jennifer's head, peering out in thin air. "Far out!" said Jules. "Jennifer!" said Doc waving at her with both hands, "Land the car right here." Jennifer did. After some guidance from Doc and some manuevering from Jennifer, the car settled down in the back yard. The cloaking device was turned off and the DeLorean materialized. Jennifer got out and threw her arms around the Doc. "Oh, Doctor Brown." she said, "It was terrible." She started to cry. "Marty thought he was doing a noble thing trying to pry Jan away from that awful man," she went on to say, "I tried to stop him but I couldn't just couldn't." "Take it easy, Jennifer." said Doc, "Clara, take Jennifer into the house and get her a glass of water." "Okay, Emmett." said Clara, taking Jennifer from the Doc and took her into the cottage. Doc looked at the DeLorean. Then, he turned to go inside.

Jennifer was able to pull herself together after she was sat down and given some water to drink. Doc and his family surrounded her as she told them what happened in 1966. "And you just left Marty there?" asked Verne. "Verned." retorted Clara. "Quite alright, Mrs. Brown." said Jennifer, drying her eyes with Kleenex, "Yes I did. It's a time machine remember." "She's got a point, Verne." said Doc, "And that means, when she's up to going back there again, me and her will return to that precise moment she left and stop Marty." "Emmett." said Clara, "A word with you, please." "Of course, Clara." said Doc as he handed Jennifer a box of Kleenex. "And take that her glass with you." said Clara, "I'll give her another glass of water." Doc did. Following Clara into the kitchen, he heard her ask "What do you mean 'you and her' are going back..." "Quite alright, Clara." said Doc, "As soon as we get there and stop Marty. I'm going to take both of them back to the future and sit them down..." "...and give them the standard lecture about using time travel as a joyride as you did after you and Marty had to go back to 1966 to get Jennifer the first time?" said Clara, "And after Jennifer came back from another reality where she didn't exist?" "I know Clara." said Doc, "But they have to learn that time traveling is not a toy." Clara filled the glass with water saying to Doc "I just hope that Marty's encounter with that bad man would teach him a lesson." Doc had nothing further to say on the subject so the two went back into the living room to join Jennifer and the boys. Doc told Jennifer "As soon as you're up to it, go into the bathroom and freshen up." "And don't worry, Jennifer." said Verne, "Maybe Marty outsmarted the dude and kicked his ass." "Verne." scolded Clara, "We will not allow this talk while we're vacationing." "Sorry mom." said Verne apologetically. "Quite alright." said Jennifer as she started to smile again, "I think someone's ass oughta be kicked. I hope it's not Marty's." After that, she turned and went into the bathroom to freshen up.

Minutes passed as Doc re-loaded Mr. Fusion. Then, Jennifer came out of the cottage. The coat that Marty gave her to wear was in her arms now and Doc noticed that she was still in her Burger King outfit. "Jennifer." he said, "You'd better put that coat back on. If someone sees you in that uniform, they'll think you're Elisabeth Shue." "Okay, Doctor Brown." said Jennifer getting in, "I'll put it back on when we arrive there in 1978. I promise." "Okay, Jennifer." said Doc getting in on the driver's side, "What's the date that you go to?" "September 5, 1978." said Jennifer. Doc set the time circuits for that. "And the time you left." asked Doc. "Between two and three." said Jennifer. "Jennifer." said Doc, "You have to be specific. We can't be appearing in 1978 when you and the DeLorean are still there. And we can't appear there well after you left. Something terrible might be happening to Marty then." "Doctor Brown." said Jennifer, "I don't rember when. Why don't you check the 'Last Time Departed' on the circuits?" "Because when you set the destination circuits for here after you got back," said Doc, "the 'Last Time Departed' no longer showed 'Sept. 5 1978'. It showed 'Oct. 25 1986 6:40 p.m.'." Jennifer looked out into space. Then, turning to Doc, she asked "Well then, what am I supposed to do?" "Just sit back, close your eyes, relax and think." said Doc. "What good will that do?" asked Jennifer. "Just do it." said Doc. Jennifer did. Jennifer sat back in her seat and tried to remember. And then, "3:10" she said, "3:10 in the afternoon." Doc set the circuits for that time. After setting the destination location for Hill Valley, California, he turned the ignition and activated the cloaking device. Then, he activated the flying circuits and lifted the car off the ground. Turning on the flying circuits, Doc accelerated the car up to 88 miles per hour saying "Jennifer, brace yourself for temporal distortion." And a brilliant flash of light surrounded the car.

Hill Valley, California
3:10 p.m.
After the light dissapated, the two time travelers found themselves over the Hill Valley of 1978. In the distance, they could see Marty holding Jan on the skateboard being towed along by a truck with a car following them. "We'll land in the alleyway and get out." said Doc. "But Doctor Brown," said Jennifer, "we'll be too far from Marty." "I could use the exercise, Jennifer." said Doc, "So should you." He landed the DeLorean in the alleyway and the two got out to chase after Marty and Jan. Unfortunately, Doc left the key in the ignition and when he was getting out, his hand accidentally hit the "cloaking" button causing the DeLorean to turn visible.

Biff was looking skyward as the residue from the brilliant flash of light was dissapating. Then, he heard footsteps and turned around to look. It was that Burger King Girl look-a-like coming out of the alley accompanied by-Doctor Emmett L. Brown. What's his involvement with her? he asked himself, And what were they doing in the alley? Biff went there to look. What he saw was a strange-looking car. Surveying the car, Biff open the door. Instead of the door opening like any other car door, it opened like a wing. Looking in, he noticed a strange device on the dashboard. Sitting ini the driver's seat, Biff looked at this device. Then, his hand hit a switch on the side and the device lit up. It was displaying numbers and something looking like an abreviation of a month. It read:
SEPT 5 1978 3:10 p.m.
Destination TimeSEPT 5 1978 3:11 p.m.
Present TimeOCT 25 1986 7:10 p.m.
Last Time DepartedHILL VALLEY CA USA
Destination Location
All of a sudden, Biff had a flush of flashbacks: Memories of that November week in 1955, that February Sunday night in New York in 1964, that windy August night at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, and the meeting of that "crazy old codger with a cane" who gave him that book that he lost. All of these plus the appearance of the two young kids who looked familiar to him, the skateboarding by one of them, and the other suddenly being accompanied by Doctor Brown caused Biff to put two and two together. "So!" he said, "Doc Brown invented a time machine." Seeing the key in the ignition, Biff turned it and the car roared into life. Then, he noticed something else on the dashboard. Three buttons-one of them reading "Hover". Pushing that button, the car lifted off the ground. After some manuevering, Biff managed to stir the car and drove off with it.

Jandick had Jan and her abducter zeroed in when the boy let go of the truck and did a leap with his captive off the skateboard and over the car. Some thumping were heard. The sound made a path to the back of the car. One look back showed the boy and the girl landing on the skateboard that went behind the car. Jandick looked ahead to turn the car around when he saw that he was heading straight for a row of motorcycles. "Sh-i-i-i-i-t!" cried out Jandick. He put his foot to the brake and the car skidded right into the row. After the car stopped, Jandick try to kick it into reverse only to drag some of the motorcycle along. Getting out, he was angerly pushing the motorcycles away when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Turning around, he saw this mean looking unshaven man wearing a leather vest, pants and an army helmet. "What's the big idea punk?" he demanded. "Listen to men." said Jandick, "That kid's got my girlfriend." "Why take it out on our motorcycles?" demanded the man. "It was an accident." explained Jandick. "Yeah sure." said the man, "It ain't no excuse, man. Nobody smashed into a Hell's Angel motorcycle without being wasted." The Hell's Angel had his fore arm at Jandick's throat. "You're making a fool of yourself." said Jandick, "You're dealing with a member of the most powerful family in Hill Valley." "Well I hope that your family has enough money to pay your doctor, crumb." Putting two fingers in his mouth, he blew a whistle. Out of nowhere, a group of men wearing the same clothes that the Hell's Angel was wearing. The man who confronted Jandick said "Waste him!" Jandick looked around. And for the first time in a long time, he felt fear rushing through his veins as the rest of the gang rushed him and started beating him up.

Marty stopped the skateboard and turned around with Jan. Looking on, they could see Jandick being beaten up by motorcycle game. On the back of their jackets read the words "Hell's Angels". Marty started to laugh saying "Yeah." Turning around, he saw the kid who's skateboard he took from him. Returning the skateboard, Marty said, patting him on the head, "Here you go. Thank's kid." Then, he heard Jan said "Jim!" Marty turned to grab her saying "Hey relax. He's learning his lesson." Then, he heard someone say "Marty!" Turning around, he saw that Jennifer had gone back to the future to get the Doc. "Doc." he said. "I'm sorry, Marty." said Jennifer, "But you left me no choice but to go back and get Doctor Brown." "Marty." said Doc, "What in the name of Sir Isaac H. Newton are you doing?" "I'm helping someone escape her destiny." said Marty. Doc and Jennifer turned to see that Jim Jandick was being beaten up by a group of Hell's Angels. "Great Scott!" exclaimed Doc, "Why did you allow that?" "Because he doesn't deserve her." said Marty, "Especialy after what called me." "What did he call you?" asked Doc. "A chicken." said Marty. "Chicken?" exclaimed Doc, "Marty. I thought after that near accident with the Roll Royce you would start ignoring people who use that word." "I did, Doc." said Marty, "But Jandick got to my nerves and..." "You could explain that later." said Doc, "Right now, we're going back to the future." Doc motioned Jennifer and Marty away from the scened and quickly moved around the corner and down the street back to the DeLorean.

The car returned from it's time traveling. As Biff got out, he started looking around. There was something wrong about the place. Some of what he was seeing wasn't here before he left. Then, he heard footsteps. It was Doc with the future versions of Marty and what he was to believe was Jennifer. So he hid out of sight until the others left.
++++++
Doc loaded Mr. Fusion saying "When we get back, the first place we're going to look is the Jandick place. See what effect you caused here in 1978." By then, Marty was starting to feel guilty about what he did. After all three got into the car, Doc set the time circuits for October 25, 1986 7:10 p.m. Activating the time circuits, the hover circuits and the cloaking device, Doc lifted the DeLorean off the ground and kicked it up to 88 miles per hour and through the time barrier.
