Chapter 2
KNOWING that it'll be hours before their youngers selves would be at that cafe sharing that milkshake, Marty and Jennifer went to Hill Valley High School to see what it looked like during the 70's. Arriving there, they discovered that the present day Hill Valley High School was no different from the 1978 one except that the lockers looked new. Jennifer spotted a dark-haired woman at what was to be someday her locker. "Marty." she said, "That must be one of the previous owners of my locker." Marty noticed. They both approached the girl as Jennifer said "There were a lot of memories here." "Yeah." said Marty, "Last year you sneezed on Mr. Strickland the day after you went back in time to 1966 and froze at Candlestick Pa..." Marty stopped in mid-speach as the girl turned to face the two time travellers. It was Jim Jandick's wife Jan. But it was Jan as a teenager. "Holy Christ!" said Marty, "You're Jan Jandick." "Charlow." said Jan, "Jan Charlow." "Well, right now it's Jan Charlow." said Marty, "But, in the future-and you don't know what the hell I'm talking about." "You've got the same locker I had last year." said Jennifer. "Last year?" exclaimed Jan, "These lockers were put in this summer." "Well it's going to be her locker in the future." said Marty, "Where we come, it was her locker last year. But, you won't be able to understand that." "Please explain." insisted Jan. "So that's what you've been doing all summer." said a voice from behind. The three turned to the source only to see Jim Jandick standing there staring daggers at them. "Flirting with someone else." he said, "Going behind my back." Marty stepped in. "I don't think so." he said, "I've already got a girlfriend." He grinningly put his arm over Jennifer. Jandick looked at Jennifer commenting "She looks like the girl in that Burger King commercial." "Well at least I'm not going out with your girl." said Marty. "You'd better remember that, chicken." said Jandick. Marty's eyes popped wide open at this. "What did you call me?" he demanded. "Chicken." said Jandick. For over a year since that incident with the Rolls-Royce, Marty kept himself under control every time someone called him chicken-even though sometimes he couldn't control himself. But the sound of that voice from Jandick uttering the word, "chicken" finally got to Marty's nerves. "Nobody", he said, "calls me chicken." He charged Jandick who grabbed him by the shirt. "Now you're going to stay away from her. Aren't you?" Marty broke free and was making a fist. The sounds of the word "fight" was heard in the hallway. The two were ready to square off when Jandick looked beyond Marty and backed off. Marty turned to look at what he saw. It was Mr. Strickland. Then, he felt Jandick put his hand on Marty's shoulder saying, with a grin on his face, "Since you're new here and didn't know that Jan's my girlfriend, I'm going to cut you a break-today. Now stay away from her." After that, Jim and Jan left. Marty turned to see Strickland following the couple. Jennifer joined in. "Marty." she said, "Let's go. We shouldn't of come here." "You didn't know that." said Marty. As they turned to leave, Jennifer asked Marty "Didn't Mr. Strickland have any hair?" "I don't think so." said Marty, "I've seen Strickland's head in 1955. It's the same thing." Jennifer shrugged. Then, they left.

Strickland finally caught up to Jim and Jan demanding "Are we going to have the same problems that you've caused last year, Jandick?" "Mr. Strickland." said Jim, "Some kid was trying to pick up my girl." "Some kid smaller than you?" demanded Strickland, "Why don't you go pick on someone your own size?" "Well, why don't everyone keep their paws off of Jan here?" demanded Jandick, "She's my girl!" Strickland winced, and stabbed a finger into Jandick's chest saying "You have a real attitude problem, Jandick. Watch it! If it wasn't for your family's control on the high school district, I would've have you right where I want you: In detention. Slacker!" After that, he left the couple. "Slacker." repeated Jandick, "Call me slacker, will he?" "Jim." said Jan, "Just forget it." Jim turned to his girl. Then, the bell rang and the two went to their respective classes.

The next place that Marty and Jennifer toured was the middle school where they first met. The two looked in as it was recess. There they were, their younger selves. Talking to each other. "It seemed liked yesterday." whispered Jennifer to Marty. Marty smiled as he looked on.

It was around two in the afternoon when Marty and Jennifer entered the cafe that was once Lou Carruthers'. The sign now read "Alice's Cafe" on top. Marty and Jennifer sat at the table as middle-aged woman approached them asking "What will it be?" Marty turned to her saying "We would like to have a Tab." "A tab?" exclaimed the woman, "I can't give you a tab unless you order something." Marty and Jennifer looked at each other. They both had this experience before, especially Marty. Turning back, Marty said "Okay. How about a Pepsi Free." The woman stared squarely into Marty's eye saying "If you want a Pepsi, you have to pay for it." "Okay." said Marty, "Just give us something without sugar." "Something without sugar." repeated the woman as she poured out two cups of coffee for the two. After producing some money, Marty and Jennifer drank the coffee. Then, the door behind them opened and it was Jim Jandick and his girlfriend Jan Charlow entering the cafe. Jim told Jan "You stay here and don't let any man get next to you. Caprende?" "Y-yes." said Jan fearfully. After that, Jandick left. Marty and Jennifer looked at Jan as her head was in her hands as if she was either about to cry or had a headache coming on. Then, she looked the two and demanded "What?" Marty and Jennifer hesitated before Marty said "Nothing." Then, with a weak grin he added "Nice day isn't it." Then, Jennifer whispered "Marty!" Marty turned to Jennifer saying "Yes?" "Look." said Jennifer. Marty did. It was his younger self with Jennifer's younger self entering the cafe hand-in-hand. Jennifer smiled. "Isn't that romantic." she said. "Yeah." said Marty, "Yeah." As young Marty was ordering a milkshake for the both of them, the current Jennifer asked Marty "Marty, why are you so nervous?" "Jennifer." said Marty, "Do remember when Needles and his friends came in here and got me to...to..." "To what?" asked Jennifer. The door opened. It was young Needles and his friends coming in. Spotting young Marty and young Jennifer sitting in a booth and sharing the milkshake that Marty ordered, Needles said "Hey! It's the big 'M'. How's it hangin', McFly?" "Hey Needles." said young Marty. Young Needles looked at Jennifer saying "Well, what do you know? You've got a girlfriend, M." "We've just met, Needles." said young Marty. Then, young Needles turned to eye Jan and whispered something to young Marty. Young Marty reeled back saying "No thanks, Needles." "Co'on, McFly." said young Needles, "That Jandick guy doesn't deserve her." "Needles." said young Marty, "If I even lay a hand on her, he'll kill me." Needles grinned. "What's the matter?" he said, "Chicken?" Young Marty was startled at what young Needles said and said "Nobody calls me chicken, Needles. Nobody!" "Then prove it, McFly." said young Needles. The current Marty tapped Jan on the shoulder saying "You'd better run, ma'am." "Why?" asked Jan. "Trust me." said Marty, "You'd don't want to know." Looking over Jan, Marty could see his younger self approaching Jan when the door opened. "Hey McFly." said a voice through the door. Marty and Jennifer looked up. It wasn't Jim Jandick standing there, it was Biff. "Biff?" muttered Marty. "What the hell are you doing, Marty?" Biff went onto ask. "Hey Biff." said young Marty, "Nothing. Just want to talk to this lady." "It look's like you were going to do more than talk to her." said Biff, "Good thing her boyfriend ain't in here." "Why?" asked young Marty. Biff picked up young Marty and rapped him on the head saying "Hello! Hello! Anybody home? Anybody? Think, McFly, think. If Jim Jandick comes in here and catches you red-handed..." The current Marty turned to Jennifer saying "There's something wrong here, Jen." "What's that?" asked Jennifer. "Biff's not suppose to come in here and intervene." said Marty, "It was Jim Jandick catching me red-handed and beating me..." Marty stopped short as something hit him. It was a memory of George McFly punching Biff in the jaw during the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance. The same dance he took his own mother to to get her and George together after he interferred with their first meeting. If it wasn't for that, Biff would never softened up and eventually intervene in what just happened. Meanwhile, young Marty explained that Needles had put him up to what he was about to do to Jan. Biff went over and picked up Needles saying, knocking on his head, "Hello. Hello. Anybody home? Anybody? When are you going to leave Marty alone? Haven't you done enough?" Then, Jandick burst in saying "What are you doing in here, Tannen?" Biff turned around and said "I was trying to keep a few kids away from your girl..." "Your responsibility is to my car out there." said Jandick, "Now I want two coats of wax on there-not just one like last time." "I just put the second one on there now." said Biff. "That quick?" asked Jandick, "I don't think so. Get out there and and put that second coat of wax." "Okay, okay." said Biff, "Don't have a horse about it." "That's cow, you idiot." said Jandick, pushing Biff against the bar, "'Don't have a cow over it.' You sound like a damn fool when you say it wrong." "Okay." said Biff, "Don't have a cow over it." Marty got up and approached Biff asking "Are you gonna let him push you around?" Biff turned to him and rapped him on the head saying "Hello, hello. Anybody home? You must be new here. Jim Jandick. The Jandick family. The most powerful family in Hill Valley. Has control of every politician in the city and county. Has a business called the Jandick Corporation. What choice do I have?" Jandick grabbed Biff by the shoulder saying "Get out there." Biff turned to young Marty saying "Hey McFly. Say hello to your mother for me." After that, Jandick pushed him out the door. Then, he turned to everyone saying "And stay away from my girlfriend." After that, he stormed out. Marty and Jennifer turned to Jan who was starting to cry. Then, a black girl who was working behind the counter comforted her saying "Hey girl! Why do you hang around with trash like that?" "He's my boyfriend." wept Jan, "He needs my love." "No he don't." said the black waitress, "Just walk away from him. And if he follows you, hit him with a court order." Then, another customer said to the waitress "It's no use, lady. The Jandicks are the most powerful...""...family in Hill Valley and Hill County." said the black waitress, "Well, look at my family. My old man didn't spend his whole life in this slop house." "Watch it, Wilson." said the middle-aged woman who served Marty and Jennifer. Marty turned to read the name tag on the black girl's blouse. It read "Debra Wilson." That's one of Mayor Wilson's kids. he said to himself. "No sir." Debra went on to say, "He went to night school and now he's trying to be someone." At that, Marty spoke up. "He's not finished yet." he said, "Some day, he'll be mayor." "Yeah." said Debra, "Something...Hey what an excellent idea. My dad can run for mayor." "A colored mayor." said the middle-aged woman, "That'll be the day." "Just you wait, Alice." said Debra, "My old man will be mayor and he'll clean up this town by driving out those Jandicks." "Good." said Alice handing Debra a cloth, "You could impress your old man by wiping up the counter." Debra took the cloth from Alice saying "My father the mayor. Mayor Goldie Wilson, I like the sound of that." After that, she started wiping up the counter. Marty turned back to Jennifer who said "Nice going, Marty. Mayor Wilson is having the same problems with that family in our time just like his predicessors." "At least this was the second time I gave the Wilson family something to shoot for." said Marty as he turned back to Jan.

Jandick left Biff alone again to go back in the cafe. Apparently, one of the customers, the one who asked him if he was going to let Jim Jandick push him around, was coming onto his girlfriend. Biff took one look at this particular customer. Then, he looked at the girl next to him. There was something familiar about those two. But he couldn't place the faces.

Jennifer was aware of Marty's concern for Jan so she said "Marty, what are you doing?" "I'm gonna try to talk her into leaving that asshole." said Marty. "Marty." whispered Jennifer, "You can't. This is 1978. That's the Jan of eight years ago. Remember what Doctor Brown said about interacting with people in the past." "I know, Jen." said Marty, "Anything I do right now could have a profound effect on future events. But I can't help it now." Turning to Jan, he said "Listen, get away from that son of a bitch. He's bad news." "Marty." said Jennifer, tapping him on the shoulder. "He's a bastard." Marty went onto to say to Jan. "Marty." insisted Jennifer. "He's trash." continued. "Marty!" said Jennifer. Marty turned to Jennifer asking "What Jen?" Out of the corner of his eye he noticed Jandick stand alongside of him. Turning back to Jan, he said "He's right behind me. Right?" Jan nodded affirmatively. "And I'm about to be shit." Marty said with doom in his voice. "You'd better believe it." said Jandick. "I think I'd better leave." said Marty as he wiggled past Jandick to get Jennifer and leave. "You'd better leave." said Jandick, "You chicken!" Marty was halfway to the door with Jennifer when he heard that. Turning to Jandick he asked "What did you call me?" "Chicken, jerk!" repeated Jandic. It's been a year since he avoided the accident with the Rolls-Royce by ignoring Needles' "chicken" remark. There were times when he couldn't control himself, but the resentment over being called a chicken was in full force. "Nobody calls me chicken." he said. "Oh, so I hit a nerve." said Jandick. Jennifer restrained Marty saying "Marty, let's go. Just ignore him." "Not without Jan." said Marty. At once, he reached Jan's arm and dragged her out of the cafe with Jandick following them.
Once outside Marty spotted a couple of kids skateboarding across the street. So Marty took Jan over there saying "He kid, kid. Stop! I need to borrow your skateboard." He removed one of the kids and skated off holding Jan tightly in his arms with Jandick followinig. Jennifer came out crying "Marty!" Then, she noticed that in his haste, Marty had let one of his keys fall out of his pockets. It was the keys to the DeLorean. Jennifer picked up the keys and headed towards the alley. Meanwhile, Jandick almost caught up with Marty and Jan when Marty grabbed the back end of a truck and escaped their pursuer. Angerly, Jandick made a mad dash at his car that Biff was waxing. Knocking him down, Jandick got into his car and drove off after the two. Biff was watching all of this and said "There's something familiar about this." Then, there was a brilliant flash of light in the sky. Biff looked up, there was a huge fireball with lines resembling fire trails sticking out. "What the hell is going on here?" he asked himself. Indeed, there was something rotten in the city of Hill Valley.
