Chapter 1

Saturday, October 25, 1986
Hill Valley, California
4:00 p.m.

HILL Valley and Hill County had been controlled by the Jandick family since the 19th century when "Quick on the Draw" Jandick was sheriff. For generations, the family had control of every politician that was in charge of the city and county. And whenever a mayor or county supervisor tried to confront a Jandick, out of office he or she went. That's what happened to Red Thomas. He was mayor of Hill Valley during the 50's and tried to ride them out of town on a rail. The result: They found a dark secret about him and he was out of office and now is the town drunk. Strickland tried to rid them when he was mayor during the 60's. But, he was so frustrated in doing so, he finally resigned and went back to being a full-time principal at Hill Valley High School. There have been some good in the Jandicks however. When they learned that one of their own was in cahoots with the Nazis, they disinherited him saying that the Jandicks are one hundred percent Americans and will not bow to evil people like Hitler. Jim Jandick was one of the worse ones yet. Being a spoiled sort, he would battle anyone who would even dared to think of stealing his girl, Jan Charlow-now his wife, from him. Marty had a painful memory of this when he was ten and went up to Jan to do something indecent to her just to prove to others that he wasn't chicken. That incident occured the same day that he met Jennifer and fell in love. When Marty tried to do the deed, Jim came in and tried to beat him to a pulp. Marty had to miss two weeks of school recuperating in the hospital and when the McFly's tried to press charges, the police refused to do anything about it. Meanwhile, whenever Jennifer wasn't in school, she was at Marty's bedside never every minute he lay there until her parents picked had to pick her up and drag her kicking and screaming home.

Marty's shift in the record store at the Peabody Mall was going to be over in a half hour when Jan Jandick entered the store wanting to buy a CD. Marty noticed that she was wearing sunglasses. "Hey ma'am." said Marty, "You don't need to wear those sunglasses in here. The light's not bright en..." Marty cut short his speach when he noticed that she had a black eye under those sunglasses. "Oh geez." said Marty, "Tell me your husband didn't do that again." "He didn't." retorted Jan, "It was a can falling on me." Marty found this hard to believe. "Mrs. Jandick." said Marty, "You've gotta get away from that bastard. He's bad news always have." "If I could find a judge that's not controlled..." said Jan before she was interrupted by her husband's arrival. She turned to him saying "Hello dear." The store manager came out from behind the counter saying as Jandick grabbed a CD from Jan's hand and read it. "Mr. Jandick." he warned, "I don't want any trouble in here now." "The only person in trouble here is my wife." said Jandick. Showing the CD to his wife, he demanded "Who recommended this kind of music? That McFly kid?" On the cover of the CD was one of Marty's favorite rock band Journey. "Stop it, Jim." said Jan, "I picked that up by mistake." "Stop lying to me, Jan." said Jim, "I'm warning you..." "Mr. Jandick." insisted the store manager, "Any voilent acts in here and I call the police." Jandick turned to the manager asking "What good will that do? My family will have this place closed down for that." The manager had nothing to respond to, so Jandick took his wife and left.

It was 4:30 and it was time for Marty to go home. With his truck in the shop, Marty took his skateboard and skated towards Burger King where Jennifer was to get off work. Arriving there, Jennifer was there sitting at the bus stop when Marty said "Yo, Jennifer." "Marty." said Jennifer, "Where's the truck." "In the shop." said Marty. "Then, how are going to take me home?" asked Jennfer. Marty stood on his skateboard saying "Just step on my skateboard and hold onto me." Jennifer did and the skateboard move. "Marty." she said, "Stop this at once." But, Marty grabbed ahold of the back of a truck and held on. After several frightening minutes, Marty let go and did a pirouette. "That's enough, Marty." said Jennifer, "Where did you learn that move?" "I saw it in a movie..." said Marty when he discovered that they were in front of the Jandick house. There was a loud argument going on inside. "...one more thing, Jan." said Jandick's voice, "That McFly boy is freinds to that Doctor Emmett Brown, a complete nutcase who should be committed." "Marty thinks he's harmless." said Jan's voice. Then, there was a slapping noise heard inside. Marty was ready to go in and intervene when Jennifer restrained him. "Marty." she said, "Please don't." "Just stay here, Jennifer." said Marty as he turned to go up to the front door. Pearing in the window, Marty said "Oh shit!" It was Jim slapping his wife every which way he can. Not wanting to knock, Marty burst in and said "Get your meat hooks off of her, you son of a bitch." Angerly, Jandick turned to Marty and asked "Don't you ever knock kid?" "Not when a life's at stake." said Marty. Then, Jandick approached Marty who realized how tall he was. Marty realized his own peril and said "But then, it's none of my business right? I'd better leave now." "You'd better leave." said Jandick, "Before I call the police." Upon hearing this, Marty-who was ready to leave-turned to him and said "I wish you would. So I could report what I saw." "I don't think so." said Jandick, "I'm going to report you for breaking and entering." Seeing how hopeless the situation was, Marty turned to leave. Jandick followed him outside and saw Jennifer there. "That's it." he said, "Just take your girlfriend and get the hell out of here before she gets another bullet in her back." Marty had joined Jennifer outside when Jandick said that. Jennifer took exception and was ready to charge him when Marty said "Jennifer. You objected to me going up there, don't you try." Realizing that she was about to be guilty of doing the same thing she forbade Marty from doing, she went with Marty and left the neighborhood.

Jandick's threat to Jennifer hit her with an idea. Realizing that Marty had to forget about the day and the fact that tomorrow is the first aniversary of Doc's temporal experiment and Marty's first trip through time-let alone hers-why not celebrate it by taking a trip through time themselves? "Marty." she said, "You've got to get your mind off of that woman's problem with her husband." "You've got a suggestion, Jen?" asked Marty. "How about you and I go back in time and..." said Jennifer who was suddenly interrupted by Marty who said "Now wait a minute, Jen. We just can't...Einstein! Jesus Christ! I've forgot to feed him." Taking Jennifer by the arm and putting her on the skateboard with him, Marty skateboarded to Elmdale Lane and Doc's house.

Doc had taken his family to Ben Lomond for an Indian Summer weekend. They were to spend the night at a cottage. During that time, Doc left Marty in charge of Einstein while he was away. Marty was to walk him twice a day and that he only liked canned food. Arriving there, Marty took Jennifer in by way of the lab. There was Einsein who greeted them. "Einstein." said Marty, "I'm sorry. I was distracted today. I've forgot about you." He and Jennifer petted the dog. Then, picking up the dog dish, Marty took it into the kitchen and open a Kal-Kan can and poured it into the bowl. Returning to the lab, Marty put it down for Einstein to eat. Then, he looked up. There was Jennifer in the DeLorean setting the time circuits. Also, the key was already in the ignition. "Jennifer." exclaimed Marty, "What the hell are you doing?" "Setting the time circuits for our trip back in time." said Jennifer. Marty went over to stop her saying "Jennifer, that's crazy. Doc..." "And so is going into the house to confront Jandick." said Jennifer. Marty looked at her. She seemed to have a point. She also at the destination time set for September 11, 1978 7:30 a.m. "That's the day we first met, Marty." said Jennifer, "Don't you remember? It was your first day back to school and there I was. It was love at first sight." Marty approached her and put his hands around her. "Yes." he said, "I do remember." "And after school," said Jennifer, "we went to the cafe across from the courthouse. You know, the one that's now an aerobics school." Marty reeled back. It was the same day that the incident with Jandick took place in the then cafe. "Jen." said Marty, "Haven't you forgotten what happened in tha.." "No I haven't." said Jennifer as she was about to kiss him. How could she forget that incident. said Marty to himself, Unless my first trip to 1955 had something to do with it. There was only one way to find out. Go back there and see how affected his past life was after George's left hook to Biff's jaw. "Okay, Jen." said Marty, "But I'm driving." Jennifer got out and went to the passenger's side while Marty got into the driver's seat. Before he closed the door, Marty said "Mr. Fusion." "Already loaded." said Jennifer. "Well then," said Marty closing the door and pushing the roof window, "let's get this show on the road." After the cloaking device was activated, Marty lifted the car off the ground, through the open roof and out into the dusk sky. Then, Marty kicked it up to 88 miles per hour and it was gone in a brilliant flash of light leaving behind a pair of fire trails.

7:30 a.m.

The morning air was disrupted by the sound of two sonic booms followed by a brilliant light. The DeLorean made it's appearance over the dawn sky. Marty looked down and saw the alleyway where Doc twice landed the DeLorean. The first time was in the year 2015 when he took Marty and Jennifer there when he learned about Marty Jr. being in trouble with the law. The second time was the trip to 1955 when he, Marty and Calpurnia had to go back there to retrieve the will of Julius Caesar. He also heard that Jennifer used that same alleyway to hide the DeLorean there in 1966 when she went back in time to buy him that controversial Beatles' "Butcher" album when his tonsils were removed. Maneuvering the car there, Marty land it and got out. After helping Jennifer out he said "First of all, Jennifer." he said, "You've gotta leave that Burger King hat and ID badge here in the car." "Why?" asked Jennifer looking at herself in the sideview mirror. "For one thing," said Marty, "Elisabeth Shue is doing that Burger King commercial during this era and you look just like her." "What about my uniform blouse?" asked Jennifer, "I can't take that off. I don't have much underneath there." Marty was wearing a coat since he got off work. So he took his off and gave it to Jennifer to wear. After putting her hat and ID badge in the DeLorean and after Marty took off his tie and put that in there as well, he kept the cloaking device on and closed the door sayinig "Remember where we parked." After that, they left the alley.
