Chapter 11

CALPURNIA looked at the rest and said with a smile “Oh, it’s only my cell phone.”

The quintet looked at each other before Ringo asked “What’s a cell phone?”

Oh the gods. said Calpurnia to herself, Cell phones don’t even exist in the Beatles’ time.

“It looks like a walkie-talkie.” said John.

“Or fiendish thingy.” said George.

“Are you a secret agent or something?” asked Paul.

“‘Secret agent man.’” sung John before saying , “Actually you look like a Bond girl.”

“Let me try.” said Ringo snatching the walkie-talkie from Calpurnia’s hand.

“Hey.” said Calpurnia but Ringo wouldn’t listen.

“Hello.” he said, “This is Ringo gear faire.”

“How about doing Cagney?” asked George.

Meanwhile, Helga was hearing Calpurnia’s voice from Clara’s walkie-talkie. Fortunately, her brother was deaf so he couldn’t hear. Then, Ringo’s voice was heard.

“Those voices.” asked Helga, “Where are they coming from?”

“Never mind.” said Clara, “Just try to break out of these ropes.”

“I asked you a question.” demanded Helga.

How can I explain to her that that was coming from my walkie-talkie when they don’t exist yet? asked Clara to herself, And Calpurnia. If I don’t get around to responding to her calls, she’ll think that something’s wrong and start searching for me. The last thing I want is for her to have a confrontation with the baron, especially if she’s pregnant. And then she thought of something. The sleep inducer. she said to herself, The casing is made of thin medal. The edges might’ve been smoothed out but it’s still sharp enough to cut through these ropes. All I have to do is unscrew the bottom holding in the batteries and start cutting.

Immediately, she rocked about in her chair causing the inducer to fall a few inches down inside her blouse. Meanwhile, the ropes binding her hands were starting to loosen a bit and she was able to reach for her blouse and tugged on it. The inducer fell out and hit the floor.

“What is that? “ asked Helga.

“Our ticket out of here.” said Clara using one foot to remove a shoe and pick it the inducer with her toes.

However, in doing so, she accidentally activated the inducer and rendered Beethoven unconscious.

“Ludwig.” exclaimed Helga.

“Oops.” said Clara, “Wrong victim.”

Victim?” exclaimed Helga, “You’re a witch.”

“No I’m not.” said Clara.

The accusation caused a surge of adrenalin in her body resulting in the hemp in the rope to break. Realizing her freedom, Clara removed the rest of the rope from her person, picked up the inducer, put her shoe back on and produced her walkie-talkie.

Just then, a voice was heard over Calpurnia’s walkie-talkie.

“Clara here.” it said, “I’m fine, Calpurnia. I’m just a little tied up.”

“A talking box.” said Fred.

This caused Calpurnia to whip out her sleep inducer and use it on him.

“What was that for?” said Paul

Noticing the startle-ness in the Beatles, Calpurnia grabbed the walkie-talkie and talked into it.

“Fred is of this time.” explained Calpurnia, “A time where the device I was talking into does not yet exist.” Then, talking into the walkie-talkie, she said “What do you mean tied up?”

“I found the three in the baron’s house all tied up in a cellar.” explained Clara, “Then, as I saw the baron take Beethoven’s niece somewhere, I fell through the window and got myself tied up as well.”

“Ouch!” said Calpurnia.

“But I broke out of the ropes.” said Clara, “And I’m going to free Helga and Beethoven and try to find Jacqueline and get all three out of there. Calpurnia, how are you doing with the Beatles?”

“I think they’ve got an idea in case you’re not successful in rescuing those three.” said Calpurnia.

“What?” asked Clara, “Calpurnia, you let can’t them get involved with past events.”

“Quite alright.” said Calpurnia, “Remember, when we’re through, we go back to this morning and stop the Beatles from going into town. Meanwhile…”

“Meanwhile, we hope that what the Beatles are planning to do doesn’t become necessary.” said Clara.

“Understood.” said Calpurnia, “Calpurnia out.”

“Roger.” said Clara, “Clara over and out.”

Putting back her walkie-talkie, Calpurnia told the Beatles “Now boys when Fred wakes up, I want you four to convince him that he was having a dream when he saw me use my walkie-talkie.”

“You don’t need to tell us.” said John, “We had lessons.”

“I’m glad to hear that.” said Calpurnia.

After putting away her walkie-talkie, Clara turned to Helga and said “Alright, Helga. You’ve got two choices. The first one is to cooperate with me by helping me revive your bother, go look for you daughter and help your brother get to that concert on time. The second choice is for you and your brother to stay here and I find Jacqueline alone.”

“I don’t take orders from witches or gypsies.” retorted Helga.

“So you think I’m a witch.” said Clara, “Alright. I’ll cast a spell on someone. Like your brother.”

She pointed the inducer at Beethoven.

“No.” said Helga, “I’ll cooperate.”

“Good.” said Clara as she unscrewed the bottom of the inducer and used the near sharp edges to cut the ropes on Helga.

After loosening the ropes a bit Clara went over to cut the rope that was binding Beethoven. By the time Helga got the ropes of her completely, Clara had replaced the bottom and pointed it at Helga saying “Now try to revive him.” Helga hesitated. “Do it.” said Clara. Helga went over and started slapping Beethoven until he revived. “Good.” said Clara, “Let’s go now. We’ve got a sixteen year old that needs to be rescued”

Picking up a two-by-four the three used it as a battering ram and smashed down the door.

“That door wasn’t sturdy.” said Clara.

“I know.” said Helga, “Not only does he hate singing and desires my daughter, he’s also stupid.”

“Hold it.” said Clara.

Beethoven didn’t hear do to deafness so Clara grabbed him by the arm.

“What is it?” asked Helga.

“This is too easy.” said Clara, “Let’s use caution here.”

“Why?” asked Helga.

“He might be setting a trap.” said Clara.

Realizing that she had a point, the three used the caution approach.

It was after six when Fred woke up.

“What happened?” he asked.

“You were sleep…”

“Ahem!” said Calpurnia waving an accusing finger.

“…dozed off.” said John.

“I just had the strangest dream.” said Fred, “I saw this lady with a talking box in her hands…”

“That’ll teach you to eat on an empty stomach.” said Ringo.

“Fred.” said Paul, “Calpurnia here tells us that a woman looking like her has a daughter who sings like a lark but the man she’s engaged to doesn’t singing.”

“You mean Baron Von Tannenhausen?” asked Fred.

“Yes.” said Paul.

“Well, it’s true.” said Fred.

“He hates singing that much.” said George.

“He shrieks at the very sound of music.” said Fred.

“Well the hills are about to be alive with the sound of music.” said John, “And just in case he comes chasing after your former employer, his sister and her kid we’ve got a surprise for him. Hit it Paul.”

Paul picked up a guitar and started to play as the Beatles all joined in.

Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it wouldn't last.
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
For some California grass.

Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Jojo. Go home
Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Back to where you once belonged.
Get back Jo.

Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can

Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.
Get back Loretta. Go home
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged
Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.

Get back Loretta
Your mother's waiting for you
Wearing her high-heel shoes
And her low-neck sweater
Get on home Loretta

Get back, get back.
Get back to where you once belonged.

After the song, John said “Thank you, Paul.” Turning to Fred and Calpurnia he said “On behalf of the group I hope we passed the audition.”

They all laughed.

Since Helga was here before, the three had no trouble finding the baron’s bedchamber.

“Hold it.” said Helga, “Let’s make sure she’s in there.” Knocking on the door, she said “Jacqueline?”

On the other side of the door, a voice was heard.

“Mother?” it asked. It was Jacqueline’s.

“It’s her.” said Helga to Clara.

“Mother.” said Jacqueline’s voice, “The baron’s locked me in here.”

“Let’s get her out of there.” said Clara.

Picking up the two-by-four they used to knock down the cellar door with they used it on the chamber door saying “Stand back.” After eleven tries the door was down and both mother and daughter reunited.

“We’ve got to go.” said Clara, “There’s not much time.”

Immediately, the four headed towards the front door only to be greeted by guards.

“Leaving so soon? I wouldn’t even think about it.”

The quarry turned around to see the baron with more of his henchmen accompanying him.

It was showtime. With a little help from his friends the Beatles, Fred put the instruments into an oxcart to be taken to the Konzerthaus.

Meanwhile, Paul turned to Calpurnia and said “You a little peeked. Are you alright?”

“Yes I am. “said Calpurnia.

“You might be really having a kid.” said Paul.

“If that’s true,” said Calpurnia, “that child…forget it. Just get all this equipment down the Konzerthaus and don’t worry about me.”

“Perhaps you should stay behind.” suggested Paul.

Realizing her duty to the Fab Four, Calpurnia said “I’ll be alright.”

Locating a cabbie, the six got in and followed the oxcart.

Realizing their surroundings, Clara had one card to play: The sleep inducer. Knowing that the baron and his henchmen having heard of such a device, Clara set it for wide field range.

“Helga, you, your brother and Jacqueline cover your eyes.” whispered Clara, “I’ve got a plan.”

“What plan is this?” asked Helga.

“Just do it.” said Calpurnia.

So they did with Helga putting her hand on the shoulder of her brother making hand gestures on what Clara had in mind. Then, with her eyes closed as well, Clara let fly a blinding blue light. When they uncovered their eyes, most of the baron’s henchmen were out cold on the ground. But the baron was still standing.

“Seize them!” he ordered.

Immediately, a pursuit ensued as the quarry was being chased by whomever Clara didn’t render unconscious. Once they hit the street, a Clara flagged down a carriage which in those days were being used as cabbies. The four got in.

“Quick!” said Clara, “The Konzerthaus and don’t spare the whip.”

However the carriage turned around and went back to the baron’s house where he and his henchmen were waiting. The driver was working for Tannenhausen.
