Chapter 5
kTHE rain was pouring down in earnest as Doc landed the DeLorean on the ground and moved it inside to his former lab that was next door to the Burger King restaurant. The Burger King restaurant itself wasn't there, but an abandoned old building was there in it's place. The lab was also worse for it's wear. Deactivating the cloaking device, Doc, Marty and Einstein got out and approaced a stack of newspapers. Doc picked up a newspaper dated February 11, 1967. The headlined read "CONSTITUTION ABOLISHED". "After I realized that there was nothing wrong with the time circuits and this was really 1985, I went to the public library to make sense of all the madness." he said, "The place was boarded up, shut down and under tight security. So I sleep induced the guard, broke in and borrowed some newspapers." "I don't get it, Doc." said Marty, "How could all this be happening? It's like we're in hell or something." "No"
said Doc, "It's Hill Valley although but I could'nt imagine hell being a lot worse." "But's it's worse than the 1985 old Biff created with the almanac." said Marty. Einstein whined and Doc said "Oh Einy. I'm sorry, boy" said Doc, "The labs an awful, awful, awful, awful mess." Doc went over to pick a basket out of a pile and set it on a foot stool for Einstein to climb in. Einstein did and Doc said "That-sa-boy." Then he turned to Marty saying "Obviously, the time continuum has been disrupted, creating this new temporal event sequence, resulting in this alternate reality." "English, Doc." said Marty, "English." "Here, here, here." said Doc, pulling up a chalkboard, "Let me illustrate." Doc picked up a chalk and drew a line. "Imagine this line represtents time." he said, "The present-1985, the future and the past." Doc pointed the chalk at "1985" saying, "Prior to this point in time, somewhere in the past, the timeline skewed into this tangent, creating an alternate 1985." Doc placed the chalk on the part of the time that was labled "past" and drew a diagonal line then drew a straight line and wrote "alt". "Alternate to you," Doc went on to say, "me and Einstein but reality for everyone else." Doc went over to a couple of draped objects saying "After picking up those news paper I went back to 1941 to see what happened." Doc showed Marty the goggles he was wearing earlier. "These are infra-red goggles." he said, "I wore them so I could see the DeLorean leave the Arizona. Do you remember the thud we heard when we were trying to leave?" "I do." said Marty. Doc pulled back a drape to reveal an oblong object resembling a bomb or a torpedo saying "This is what we ran into." "A bomb!" exclaimed Marty. "No." said Doc, "It the torpedo that was supposed to sink the Arizona." "Holy Geez." said Marty. "When we deflected it," said Doc, "we had inadvertantly spared the Arizona and the men who were supposed to go down with her." "Doc." said Marty, "Are you saying that we have just saved the lives of almost twelve hundred men?" "Pricisely." said Doc. "That's great, Doc." said Marty, "We've saved some men from a terrible fate." "Unfortunately, one of the men who were supposed to go down with the Arizona was Nate Barnard." Doc went back to the pile of newspapers and showed Marty another newspaper dated November 8, 1960. "This what happened after we changed history." said Doc pointing to the headline. It read "BARNARD BY LANDSLIDE". The story read that Barnard won after it was learned that his presidential opponent, John F. Kennedy, had mistresses. Marty looked up from the newspaper and said "That son of a bitch. He must've scandalized JFK with that wild story." "Marty, I hate to say this, but it's true. Even in our reality." said Doc, "Kennedy did have mistresses. Only that in our reality, it wasn't known until years later." "This is heavy." said Marty. "There's that word 'heavy' again." said Doc, "Marty, the deflection caused the U.S. to eventually lose it's Consitution, not affect the earth's gravatational pull." He showed Marty more news papers. It was terrible. "As the years progress, Barnard siezed more power." said Doc, "In 1967, the constitution was finally abolished and he started mistreating his citizens and making fun out of it. Then, twelve years ago, your father and Jennifer's organized an underground guerrila operation to depose Barnard and restore freedom to this country." "Good for dad." said Marty. "Up till now, him and his underground organization have been evading the law, sabotaging torture chambers and fleeing." said Doc, "But it won't last for long." "Why?" asked Marty. "Because I went into the future and learned that they were finally captured and executed." said Doc, "And after that, there were no more attempts." Marty felt his heart sank. "I'm sorry Marty." said Doc, "If I hadn't gotten you to enlist in the Navy and just loan you the money for Jennifer's gift, none of this would've happened." "So now we go back to 8:55 this morning and convince you to loan me the money." said Marty. Doc disagreed. "We can't." he said, "If we go back to 8:55 this morning, it will be the 8:55 a.m. of this reality in which Nate Barnard is the dictator of the United States and where this is what I become." Doc pulled out a snapshot of himself standing along side Barnard and displaying one of his latest inventions, a multi-torturing device. "No Marty." said Doc, "The only way we could restore democracy to the US and repair this tangent is to go back in time and destroy the Arizona killing all those men who are supposed to die." Marty was shocked at this. "Kill them?" he exclaimed. "Yes, Marty." said Doc, "Kill them." How could Doc suggest such an action like that? asked Marty to himself. "And make it look like the Japanese did it." Doc went on to say. Marty could not believe his ears on what Doc was saying. "Marty." continued Doc, "I know it's murder, I know it's also deceitful, and I know it's unfair. But weigh all that against what we're witnessing right now." "Doc." said Marty, "Some of those men on the Arizona are my friends." "Some of those men died forty-four years ago today." said Doc, "Or, should I say, supposed to die forty-four years ago." "Doc." said Marty, "Why don't we just get rid of Nate? That wouldn't be enough, would it?" "Marty." said Doc, "Disposing of Nate isn't good enough. It has to be all of them." Doc put his arms on Marty and said "Marty, I know what those friends of yours meant to you in the past. But, if we spare even one of them, just one, it could still be a different reality, perhaps even worse than this one. I'm sorry, Marty. But all of them must die in order to restore history to the way we knew it. If it wasn't for us they would've been dead at the hands of the Japanese." "Doc." said Marty, "What about Clara? She was supposed to die. If it wasn't for you, she would've gone down that ravine. But you prevented that. And nothing happened, did it?" "Marty." said Doc, "That was different. I was in love at the time. But, I knew that I had to come back to the future with her and our kids so that history would be preserved." Doc turned to another table. It too, like the torpedo, was draped. He yanked back the covers to reveal a model of Pearl Harbor. "Excuse the accrudity of this model." said Doc, "I didn't have time to build it up to scale or paint it." "It looks great." said Marty somberly. Doc put a toy boat on a field of blue saying "This represents the Arizona." Doc, then put a toy car on top of the boat saying "This represents the first DeLorean." Then, he picked up a model airplane saying "This is the Japanese bomber." Then, he picket up a brocken off baseball bat the size of a needle saying "This represents the topedo before I retrieved it." Then, he picked up another broken off baseball bat of the same size as the first one saying "This is the torpedo that we got here." Finally, he gave Marty another toy car saying "And this represents the DeLorean that'll sink the Arizona." Marty understood all of it. Doc continued his lecture. "When we deflected the torpedo from it's target," said Doc, "The homing device, fuse, and timer were damaged. So during my trip back to 1941 to investigate what happened and retrieved that torpedo, I then went to Japan and their Imperial munitions dump to borrow some replacement parts. They're now installed." He picked up the plane and attached the "torpedo" model to it. "We're in the car taking off." said Doc as he picked up the toy car with his other hand. Then, Doc guided the airplane towards the toyboat saying "Plane approaching Arizona ready to drop the bomb." Then, he turned to Marty saying "Now Marty, at this point, pick up the other car and attach the other 'bomb' to it." Marty complied. "Drop bomb." said Doc and Marty did. "Guide it towards the Arizona." Marty did. Then, Doc detached the "bomb" from the plane saying "Bomb droping" Putting down the plane, Doc picked up the car again and guided it towards the torpedo. "Car collides with torpedo." said Doc touching the car with the "torpedo","'Our' torpedo hits Arizona." Marty stopped for a minute. "Doc." said Marty, "I can't." "Good thing this is only a simulation." said Doc, "Let's load the torpedo and get ready to go." "Right Doc." said Marty. By the sound of his voice, Doc knew that Marty was not enthused about the plan. After putting the torpedo inside the DeLorean, Doc loaded Mr. Fusion as a noise was heard outside. "Hey McFly." it said. It was Biff. "We know that you're in there." he went onto say, "Either get out of there or we'll blow it up." Doc and Marty look at each other with fright.
