Chapter 14

DOC drove the car towards the Lyons Estate construction site. In the distance, he could see his own Marty, standing on the hoverboard and dangling on a rope hanging from the second DeLorean. The DeLorean had set him down in front of the huge billboard advertising the new neighborhood that would be in existance in his own time. Then, he saw Marty produce the walkie-talkie he took from his second self and talk to the second Doc from above. And in his hand was the Almanac. "The book." said Doc, "Marty's succeeded." Then, seeing his other self hover out of his sight, Doc made a turn and hid the car behind the billboard. After he and Calpurnia got out, they picked up the unconscience second Marty and approached their own Marty. Marty turned to see them saying "Doc, Calpuria. It's good to see both of you. I've got the will." "Thank God." said Doc as Marty handed the will to Calpurnia. Meanwhile, Doc took the Almanac from Marty and put it in the inside coat pocket of his counterpart. Then, Marty gave that other self of his his the binoculars and the walkie-talkie which all the while was squawking "Marty! What's going on? Burn the book." Doc gave the second Marty a pat on the cheek trying to revive him. Finally, "Hunh. What the hell?" The three carefully snuck back behind the billboard. "Doc?" said the second Marty looking around. "Marty." said Doc's voice on the walkie-talkie. Marty looked at it saying "Doc. "Is that you?" asked Marty. "Marty." insisted Doc's voice, "The book burn it!" "Doc." said Marty, "Didn't I tell you..." He stopped in mid-speech and felt his jacket pocket. Reaching in, he found the book saying "Doc. The book! I've got the book." "What are you waiting for, Marty?" said Doc's voice, "Burn it!" Pulling out the book of matches he took from Biff, he put the book in the pail, lit the match and set the book on fire. Then, looking at the matchbook Marty turned it around and looked at the label. Then, pulling out the 1973 newspaper about his father, the second Marty looked at it. The trio could see a smile come to that Marty's face. Using his walkie-talkie, he said "Hey Doc. The newspaper's changed. Everything's back to normal. That means Jennifer's okay and Einie's okay. Right?" "That's right, Marty." said Doc's voice, "It's the ripple effect! The future is back. Now, let's go home." "Right, Doc." said Marty, "Let's get our ass back to the future and..." Crack! There was a huge bolt a lightening streaming down, barely missing the second Marty and striking a tree. Then, the second Marty said into his walkie-talkie "Doc. Are you okay? Over." "That was a close one, Marty." said Doc's voice, "I almost bought the farm with that one." "Be careful, Doc." said the second Marty, "You don't wanna be struck by light..." Boom! A bolt of lightning struck the second DeLorian and a flash of light was seen followed by a backwards "9" formed by streams of fire. Being knocked to the ground by explosion, the second Marty got to his feet and tried the walkie-talkie. "Doc." he said "Doc. Are you alright. Come-in Doc. Over." Nothing. "Come-in, Doc. Come-in." Then, something came out of the sky. It was a piece of rope. "What the hell?" he asked himself. Doc and Marty heard some weeping. Turning around, they could see Calpurnia crying. "My husband." she said, "He's gone." Doc turned to Marty whispering "The grieving process, it's taking hold." "Yeah, look at her." said Marty. Doc did. But then, one look at her now dangling hair reminded him of something. "Great Scott!" said Doc. "What is it, Doc." asked Marty. "Your first self." said Doc, "On our way over here, we ran into Biff's gang and had to flee." "So?" asked Marty. "I accidently led them to my old place here in 1955 and they saw your first self." said Doc, "It takes long to explain, but me and Calpurnia knocked them all out. For how long, I don't know. But if they come too while your first self comes out of the house..." "Oh shit!" said Marty, "We better go find out what's happening there." At that moment, it started to rain. After getting the heartsick Calpurnia in the back, Doc and Marty got in the front seat. Doc was ready to start the car when he pause. "Doc." said Marty, "What is it?" Opening the car window, Doc said look. Outside another car showed up. It was the one driven by the Western Union man inside. The second Marty turned to look as the man got out of the car asking "Mr. McFly." "Yes?" said the second Marty. "Is your name Marty McFly?" asked the man. "Yeah." said the second Marty. "I have something for you." said the man reaching into his coat and producing a huge Manilla envelope saying "A letter." "A letter for me?" exclaimed the second Marty, "That's impossible. Who the hell are you?" "Western Union." said the man, "Actually, a bunch of us at the office were kinda hoping that you could shed some light on the subject. We had that evelope in our possession for the past seventy years." Turning back to the car, the man took out an umbrella and opened it, picked up a clipboard and came back with it saying "It was giving to us with the explicit instructions that it be delivered to a young man with your discription answering name of 'Marty' at this exact location, at this exact minute, November 12, 1955. We had a bet whether or not if this Marty would be hear. It looks like I lost." The man laughed. "You did say seventy years?" said Marty. "Yeah." said the man, "Seventy years, two months and twelve days to be exact. Sign here on line six, please." Marty did. Then, opening the enveloped, he read it. "It's from the Doc." said Marty. Running over to the car to using the headlights to read it, Marty read "'Dear Marty. If my calculations are correct, you will recieve this letter immediately after you saw the DeLorean struck by lightening. First, let me assure you that I'm alive and well. I've been living happily these past eight months in the year 1885. The lightning bolt'...1885!." A smile came to his face. "September 1885." he said. "Hey kid." said the man, "Wait a minute. What's this all about." "He's alive." said the second Marty, "The Doc's alive. He's living in the Old West, but he's alive." "Hey kid," ask the man, "Are you alright? Do you need any help?" Turning to the man, the second Marty said "There's only one man who could help me, now." At that he turned and headed to town. Seeing that Doc, pulled out and headed back to town in another route.

In the car, Marty said "Hey Doc. Isn't your old home that way?" "Yes it is." said Doc, "But it's too late to go there. We have to go into town to see if your first self escaped those guys." Marty shrugged. "You're the doc, Doc." he said. Arriving in town, Doc pulled the car into the alleyway. Turning to Marty, he said "Stay with Calpurnia. She needs some comforting now." "Right, Doc." said Marty. Picking up his binoculars, Doc went out to watch. There he was, his other self. He was talking to someone in the DeLorean. "What's the meaning of this?" he demanded. Was Doc too late? No, he wasn't. It was the first Marty that his first self was talking too. "Find out in thirty years." Doc heard the first Marty say. Assured, Doc turned back to the alleyway and got back in. Turning to Marty, he said "You made it, Marty." "Great." said Marty, "That's great. Let's get back to our hotel room." Doc paused. "Doc." said Marty, "What is it?" Doc turned to say to Marty smiling "This is about to be the moment I have sent you back to the future." Going down memory lane, Marty leaned back saying "It sure is." In the distance, another DeLorean appeared in the sky. It was the new one Doc got after the first DeLorean got smashed up by a train. It just brought him and Marty from the year 1964 with the jar of poison that Biff almost used on George McFly. Having landed on the roof, that Doc got out with the poison and the "Blast from the Past" bag and put the poison in there with the food that Biff poisoned on George. Then, he saw him tie the bag onto the lightening rod and leave. The clock struck for what was about to be the last time ever as the DeLorean lifted off and headed for a landing on the lawn in front of the courthouse. Then, Doc turned to see the first Marty head down the street to right in front of the Blue Bird Motel where the three were going to spend the night. Meanwhile, the first Doc was already on the ledge of the clock tower trying to reconnect the two plugs that were disconnected when the tree branch fell on the cord. Turning to Calpurnia he said "You should see this. This is the most important moment in history. The moment I sent Marty-I mean Heston, back to the future. And the moment we came back to save it." Meanwhile, down the street, the first Marty had turned the DeLorean around and started heading back up the street with the long hook behind it. Finally, the first Doc got the dangling cord and started yanking the other cord with his other hand. But, he yanked it too hard, the cord near the ground was pulled out. Finally, the first Doc connect the cord at the clocktower, used the rope that he threw down to Marty to pull up the cord from the ground and tied it to the minute hand of the clock and slid down. Reaching the ground, Doc went to the tree branch and took it off the cord on the ground. The first DeLorean was closing in. Then, the first Doc picked up the cord and ran with it to the dangling cord to connect it. At that moment, the minute hand moved to 10:04 and the bolt of lightening struck the clock tower as the first Doc connected the two cords. The first DeLorean hooked up to the heavy duty wire that was tied to the two light posts and conducting the bolt of lightening causing 1.21 jiggowatts to be channeled into the flux capacitor. The car vanished in a flash of light leaving behind a pair of fire trails and knocking the first Doc to the ground. "Now watch this." said Doc. The first Doc got up, looked around at the wire and the two damaged light post, and started runnig inside the two firetrails thrusting his hand up in the air giving out a joyous yell. Then, running back to the wire, he looked up again. Behind him, came the second Marty running towards him saying "Doc. Doc." The first Doc was returning to his Packard when the second Marty reached him saying "Doc." The first Doc turned to him exclaiming "Marty!" "Just relax, Doc." said the second Marty, "It's me, Marty." "No!" exclaimed Doc, "It can't be! I've just sent you back to the future." "I know you did, Doc." said the second Marty, "But, I'm back, back from the future." Meanwhile, the DeLorean from 1964 pulled out onto the street and drove off. "Great Scott!" said the first Doc and he passed out. "Doc." said the second Marty, "Doc. Oh, Doc." Then, a sound was heard and a brilliant flash of light was seen. The second Marty looked up exclaiming "What the hell?" In the rental car, Doc said "Okay. Let's go back to our hotel room." Pulling out of the alleyway, Doc drove the car back to the hotel.

Match, Skinhead and 3d finally came too. When they did, they found themselves in the convertable with the roof up. What was worse, it was raining cats and dog. Looking at the driveway, they saw that the Packard had left. "Oh shit!" said one of them, "We blew it!" Then, looking down the street, they saw a strange figure coming towards them. The figure looked slimy. "Yikes." they said, "It's the Slime Monster." One of the turned on the ignition. At the same time, the headlights went on and shined on the creature. "Wait a minute." said one of the gang members, "That's no monster, it's Biff." Looking up, the other two saw that it was Biff, all covered with manure. "This is the worse night of my life." he cried out as his three friends looked at each other.

Calpurnia was able to pull herself together when she got into some pajamas that Doc gave her. Being able to talk, she said to him. "You didn't answer my question, Emmettus." "What question is that?" asked Doc. "If you and Heston were time travelers and knew about my husband's murder," she asked, "why didn't you find a way to prevent it?" Marty overheard this and asked "Yeah, Doc. Why didn't we?" "We couldn't." said Doc, "I'm sorry, ma'am. But..." "Doc." said Marty, "We should of. She doesn't deserve to be a widow. And her husband didn't deserve to die." Turning to Calpurnia, Doc said "Excuse us for a minute. Doc used an extra curtain, suspended by a cord attached from one wall to the other, to keep Calpurnia's sleeping area separate from Doc and Marty's. Doc closed this curtain and turned to Marty asking "Marty. How many times did I have to warn you about disrupting the space-time continuum because you heart told you so?" "But Doc.." protested Marty. "Marty." insisted Doc, "If we go back there to stop the assassination, the future we return to could be an alternate one, perhaps far worse than the other alternate realities we've seen." Sitting Marty down, Doc told him "For some time she and Caesar were trying to a have a kid of their own. A son to be exact. According to the normal time line, Julius Caesar made his nephew, Octavius, as his heir because he hasn't had a son of his own. They've tried up to the time of his death." Doc looked at the curtain that acted as a partition between them and Calpurnia saying "By having Caesar survive the Ides of March allows both of them more chances to conceive-only this time, they'll probably succeed. Maybe not. But we can't take that kind of a chance." "What do you mean 'that kind of a chance'?" said Marty, "What about Clara, you saved her life and she was supposed to die when she fell in that ravine." "What about us saving the Arizona?" asked Doc, "You remember Pearl Harbor don't you?" "Yes I do, Doc." said Marty. "Marty," said Doc, "once one gets it in his or her own head that it's safe to tamper with history, the results start becoming disasterous." Marty sat back, and began to ponder what Doc had said.

Calpurnia lay there on her bed behind the closed curtains. Behind them, Emmettus and Heston were carrying on a conversation. Approaching them, she heard Emmettus say "...because he hasn't had a son of his own. They've tried up to the time of his death. By having Caesar survive the Ides of March allows both of them more chances to conceive-only this time, they'll probably succeed. Maybe not. But we can't take that kind of a chance." "What do you mean 'that kind of a chance'?" asked Heston, "What about Clara, you saved her life and she was supposed to die when she fell in that ravine." "What about us saving the Arizona?" asked Emmettus, "You remember Pearl Harbor don't you?" "Yes I do, Doc." said Heston. "Marty," said Emmettus, "once one gets it in his or her own head that it's safe to tamper with history, the results start becoming disasterous." Calpurnia reeled back on her bed. She knew that there was a possibility that her husband's life could have been saved. But what about the two that helped her get her husband's will? Prevent that tragedy and the future is changed, possibly for the worse.
