Chapter 11

BEFORE they left for Pine City, Doc went to a store to buy some suitcases to put the clothes they wore from both the future and from Ancient Rome in. They were on the outskirts of town when the trio got out of the DeLorean. After setting the circuits for the next day, Doc got out saying "I've set the re-entry time for 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. And this time, it is going to be 8:00 a.m., not 10:04 a.m. like you did in 44 B.C., Marty." "Okay, Doc." said Marty, "I get it." Doc pushed the button and the DeLorean materialized out of thin air. "I can't keep it invisible indefinetly." he explained, "And I can't just stash it someplace where it's liable to be stolen or hit by lightning." "Lightning?" exclaimed Marty, "Oh yeah. Tonight's that thunderstorm." "Precisely." said Doc, "Now stand back, both of you." Doc trained the remote on the DeLorean whiched kicked on and into gear. Then, it took off accelerating up to 88 miles per hour and disappearing into a flash of light leaving behind a pair of fire trails. After that, Doc said "Okay everyone, remember where we parked." "Now what, Doc?" asked Marty. "Now we go into Pine City and rent a car." said Doc, "Afterwards, we drive back to Hill Valley and check into the Blue Bird Motel." "Whatever you say, Doc." said Marty, "Hey Doc, why are we going to Pine City to rent a car?" "Because almost everyone in Hill Valley knows who I am." said Doc, "If I wanted to rent a car there, someone would think that my Packard had broken down." "Oh yeah." said Marty, "Well, you're the doc, Doc." "Okay." said Doc, "Let's go into town and rent a car." The trio turned to head into Pine City.

After renting a car, they headed back to Hill Valley. It was almost dark when they arrived. Arriving at the Blue Bird Motel, Doc gave Calpurnia some money. "Go in there and request a room for the night." he said. "You are coming with me aren't you." said Calpurnia. "Out of the question." said Doc, "I can't risk showing my face in there now. Someone's liable to think that the mansion is being fumigated." "Fumigated?" asked Calpurnia. "Never mind that now." said Doc, "Never mind that. Just go in there and request a room. We must spend the night here in this time period." Calpurnia turned to head to the office. "Hey Doc." said Marty, "Maybe I should follow her in there." "Not a good idea, Marty." said Doc, "Remember that skateboarding incident in the town square a few days earlier?" "Oh yeah." said Marty, "Hey Doc, this is gonna be tricky. What kind of room would Calpurnia be requesting? We're out here, and she's the only one in there." "Never mind that, Marty." said Doc, "If it's one bedroom, I'll have to figure out the sleeping arrangement." Moments passed before Calpurnia came back with a key. But, she was heading for somewhere else. And there, at that somewhere else, was the other Doc Brown-the Doc Brown that was to send Marty back to the future later that evening. He was spraypainting the street for the starting point that Marty need to drive the DeLorean towards the long length of wire conducting the 1.21 jiggowatts of electricity need to send him back to 1985. "Calpurnia." Doc whispered. She turned to see the Doc that came with her. Then, turning to the other Doc, she acted a little confused. Doc beckoned her back to the two that came with her to this era. "Emmettus." said Calpurnia, "If that's you. Who is that man with the can?" "Me." said Doc, "Aren't you forgetting? There's three of me now." "Of course." said Calpurnia, "You told me earlier." "Com'on now." said Doc, "I see you've got the key. Let's go to our room and wash up. Then, we'll all go to Lou's Cafe and plan our next attack." "Okay, Doc." said Marty. They went to the room that Calpurnia had got. Inside, they checked it out. It was one room with a bathroom. There was one bed and two cushioned chairs. "Okay." said Doc, "Calpurnia, you'll sleep in the bed. Me and Marty-I mean Heston-will take the chairs for tonight." Marty felt like protesting before saying "Whatever you say, Doc." "In the morning, we'll use the bathroom to change our clothes before going back to Rome." said Doc. "Providing we succeed." said Marty. Doc turned to Marty saying "We must succeed." Afterwards, they washed up and headed out to Lou's Cafe.

It was dark when they arrived at the cafe for a late dinner. Using a memo pad from the diner, Doc drew out his plan. "Okay, everyone." he said "Biff will arrive at the dance within the hour. Remember Marty, you'll be hiding in the back of his car and will follow him around there in hopes of getting that Almanac. Also, your first self will be there with your mother at that dance. You're to get both her and your father to fall in love in order to restore your existance." "Okay Doc." said Marty, "What's the plan?" "The plan is when we get there, you remain behind in the car and out of sight, Marty." said Doc. "Me?" asked Marty. "Yes you." said Doc, "Like I said, your other two selves are there so you must stay out of their sights." Marty felt dissappointed, but the Doc was the Doc and that Doc was always right. "Me and Calpurnia will follow both your other self and Biff into the gym." Doc went onto say, "We'll pull a pickpocket stunt on him and pull out that will from the Almanac." Turning to Calpurnia, he said "I learned a trick from a movie where pickpockets were involved. Now, the Almanac will be in Biff's back pocket. All you have to do is to bump him while I remove the will from the Almanac without him feeling a thing." "Doc, you've gotta be careful not to let my other self see you." said Marty. "I won't." said Doc. He drew a map on the memo sheet saying "This is the layout of the high school. Now, excuse the accrudity of my drawing. I don't have time to draw it up to scale." "That's okay, Doc." "According to your story, Marty." said Doc, "You followed Biff in the gym, watched as his friends gave him a girlie magazine, followed him out, saw him talk to Mr. Strickland and saw him confiscate the magazine from him. You think that's the Almanac and follow Strickland to his office." Turning to Calpurnia, he said "While Strickland is talking to Biff, you're to go into the gym and out another door." Writing the word "Gym" on the drawing Doc drew a couple of doors. Then, he drew some arrows to show her the path she must follow to intercept Biff. "Meanwhile, Once Strickland leaves Biff and Marty's other self follows him, I'll follow Biff until you intercept and bump him. That's the moment I take the will out of the almanac without him knowing it." Turning to Marty he said "Now, we have to time it so we get the will out of there. If you recall Marty, Biff took the book out of his back pocket and put it inside his coat pocket." "I do, Doc." said Marty. Turning to Calpurnia, "So Calpurnia, you've only got a split second to bump him and allow me to pickpocket him. Now that's plan A." "And what's plan B?" asked Marty. "Plan B is used only if plan A fails." said Doc, "And it's tricky plan." "How tricky, Doc?" asked Marty. "It might involved endangering the space-time continuum." "Oh shit!" said Marty, "I have a feeling that this is going to get heavy. What's the plan?" "The plan for you is to wait nearby while your father punches out Biff and your other self takes the Almanac. Me and Calpurnia will follow your other self, being out of sight of course, into the gym..." "Doc." said Marty, "Another me is gonna be up there playing 'Johnny B Goode.'..." "I know, Marty." said Doc, "Me and Calpurnia will have to stay out of sight of that other self as well. But, when we follow the you with the Almanac to the other door, I want you to stand ready somewhere outside until the first you knocks the second you out by opening the door on him-I mean...you know." "Of course, Doc." said Marty. "After which, Biff recovers the Almanac and takes off. When your other self gets up, me and Calpurnia will sneak up on him-I mean you-and sleep induce him-you." "For what purpose, Doc?" asked Marty. "So you could take your other self's place," said Doc, "And go with my other self to follow Biff and get that book from him and get out the will." "You mean me replace me?" asked Marty." "Precisely." said Doc, "We'll take the you that you've replaced and drive over to the Lyon's Estate construction site where, after you get both the Almanac and the will, and rendezvous with with you." "Got it, Doc." said Marty. "One more thing, Marty." said Doc, "Once you replace you, there's a possibility that the time line will skew into the tangent where Hill Valley in 1986 will revert to Hell Valley in which Biff is powerful and currupt, has murdered your father, and married you mother and in which I have been committed. So once we got that will, we have to make sure that the Almanac is burned so we could get our own 1986 back." "Right, Doc." said Marty. "Okay, you two." said Doc, "Let's get this show on the..." "Hey guys." said a voice behind them, "Does any of you have a pencil? Mine broke when I was writing a note." Doc and Marty turned to look who it was. Then, they turned back hiding their faces. It was the first Marty-the Marty that came to 1955 the first time. Doc gave the pencil he was using to Calpurnia whispering "Here, give it to that person behind us." Calpurnia looked at the first Marty saying "Heston, is that the..." "Shhh." hushed both of them, "Yes. Quick, give him the pencil." Calpurnia did. "Thanks, ma'am." said the first Marty, "Are you three in town for something." "Yes." said Calpurnia as Doc and Marty crept towards the door, "We're looking for my husband's will." Doc tugged at Calpurnia's arm. "You're husband?" asked the first Marty, "Is he dead?" "Yes." said Calpurnia. "When did he die?" asked the first Marty. Doc and Marty had their back turned to the first Marty. And they said "About two thousand years." The first Marty turned to the two saying "How can you guys make a joke like that?" "We're serious." they said. "I've have to go now." said Calpurnia, "Come on you two." "I'd wish I had time to help you." said the first Marty, "Maybe, I'll run into you three in the future." As the trio left, they said "Or the past." And they headed out to the car.

After the conversation, Marty went back to write his warning note to Doc. Then, he paused for a minute. The past? he asked himself. He turned to look at the three who headed out to their car. It can't be. he said to himself.

In the parking lot, the three sat in the car until Biff would arrive. When he did, Doc said "Okay everyone. It's showtime." Doc and Calpurnia got out of the car leaving Marty behind. Hiding behind the car, the two saw Biff get out of his car and go up to the door to look in. On the dashboard, was the Sports Almanac. Using the binoculars, Doc could see the will inside it. Then, he saw a hand reach out for it only to retreat back. Doc, removed the binoculars from his eyes to see that Biff had returned to pick up the book and put it into his back pocket. Then, he went in. Then, the other Marty jumped out of the car and followed Biff into the gym. Once both of them were inside, Doc and Calpurnia headed to the door. Looking in, they could see Marty producing his walkie-talkie and trying to get his own Doc. Then, he dissappeared into the crowd. Doc and Calpurnia opened the door and went in. Once inside, the song "Night Train" was being performed by a band. Peering in, they saw that there was a lot of dancing. On the side of the wall was the banner "Enchantment Under the Sea." They also got a glimpse at the band. On the big drum were the words, "Marvin Berry and the Starlighters." Using the binoculars, Doc looked around for Marty and Biff. Finding Marty, he saw him using his binoculars. Turning his binoculars to where Marty was looking, he saw Biff with his friends. In his back pocket was the Almanac with the will inside. Two of them were showing Biff a magazine called Oh-La-La! The other was spiking the punch with brandy. Then, all four of them looked in one direction and hid both book and bottle. Panning the binoculars, Doc saw who it was that they were hiding their stuff from. It was Mr. Strickland. And he was starting to approach the group. They turned to leave the gym not knowing that they were being followed by Marty. Doc and Calpurnia turned to follow their quarry outside. Staying out of site of both Marth and Biff and his gang, the two saw Marty hiding behind a pillar watching the four he was following. Doc could hear Biff ask one of his guys "Where's that punk Calvin Klein?" "How am I supposed to know?" said one of his gang members, "I aint his secretary." "Go find him." said Biff, "He cost me three hundred bucks damage to my car, and I owe him a knuckle sandwich." "Here you go, Biff." said another of his gang, giving him the brandy. "I'm reading." said Biff. As he did, his guys left to find the first Marty. Then, turning their eyes to the second Marty, the two time travelers could see him look out into the parking lot. There was a car pulling up. Doc recognized it. It was his old Packard. But tonight the first Marty was driving it taking his mother to the dance.
++++++

Marty was sitting in the car that Doc rented when he looked up to see the Packard arrive with his first self and his mother. Pretty soon, Biff would show up and drag him out of that car and start after Lorraine. Then, his future father would show up and punch out Biff, and he and Lorraine would live happily ever after. Marty was only hoping that Doc and Calpurnia would have that will out of the Almanac before his second self takes it from Biff.
++++++

Doc and Calpurnia saw Marty's second self jump into a stairwell trying to get the almanac. At that moment, Mr. Strickland showed up. "Well, well, well, Mr. Tannen." he said, "How nice to see you here." "Well, Mr. Strickland." said Biff, "It's nice to see you, too." Doc turned to Calpurnia saying "That's your cue. Go into the gym and out the door and cut in front of him." Calpurnia nodded and went in.
++++++

The music was barely finished when Calpurnia was halfway across the dance floor. Then, she heard one of the dark skinned musicians said "We gonna take a little break, but we'll be back in a little while so don't nobody go nowhere." She turned to look when a man in a white coat and black trousers walked by on his way outside the gym. Calpurnia turned to look at him and saw that he was in a hurry for something. But what? Turning her attention another door across the gym she headed for that.
++++++

Meanwhile, Doc saw Mr. Strickland confiscate the girlie magazine saying, reading the cover, "'Sports statistic.' Pretty interesting subject. Homework, Tannen?" "No. It ain't homework." said Biff, "Because I'm ain't home." Strickland winced and jammed the book at Biff's chest saying "You've got a real attitude problem, Tannen. Watch it! Or one day, I'll have you right where I want you, in detention. Slacker!" After that Strickland left for his office being followed by the second Marty. Doc saw his opportunity and followed Biff. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Calpurnia sneaking through the cars also heading for Biff. But then, Biff pulled the Almanac out of his back pocket and put it inside his coat. Damn! said Doc to himself. He turned to intercept Calpurnia.
++++++

Calpurnia got closer in her approach towards the Brutus look-a-like known as Biff when she felt a restraining hand. It was Emmettus. "We're too late, Calpurnia." he said, "Biff had put the book in his shirt pocket." "What do we do now?" asked Calpurnia. "We'll have to put Plan B into effect." said Emmettus. Immediately, they headed back to the rental chariot.
++++++

Marty watched as he saw his other self being pulled out of the Packard by Biff and into the arms of his gang. Then, a knock was heard. It was Doc and Calpurnia. Marty opened the car door saying "Doc. The will." "We're too late, Marty." said Doc, "Biff took the Almanac out of his back pocket and tucked it into his coat." "Oh shit!" said Marty. "We don't have a choice now, Marty." said Doc, "You'll have to take your second self's place and get that book and the will away from Biff." "I know, Doc." said Marty, "I know." The three got out of the car. Marty stayed behind as Doc and Calpurnia headed back to the gym.
