Chapter 1

Sunday May 4, 1986
9:00 am
Hill Valley, California

IT was another sunny Sunday morning in Hill Valley. Marty just pulled up to his house when he received a visitor. It was Doc Brown. He was driving the DeLorean. What the hell is he doing here? asked Marty to himself, And what the hell is he driving the DeLorean into my neighborhood in broad daylight? He got out of the truck and approached Doc who got out of the DeLorean. "Doc." he said, "What brings you here? And why are you driving the DeLorean instead of your regular car?" Doc turned to see Marty and said "Oh there you are." The next thing that Doc said startled Marty. "It's a nice house you got." he said, "And a nice neighborhood." "Doc?" asked Marty. "I'm sorry, Marty." said Doc. At least he knows who I am. said Marty to himself, But why the hell is he acting like he's seen the nieghborhood for the first time? He's been here many times. Doc didn't stop. "Marty." he said, "I need your help." "Doc." said Marty, "What the hell's going on? You're acting like you new to this neighborhood." "All your questions will be answered." said Doc, "Get in." As Marty did, he asked himself What has happened to Doc? Then a bark was heard. Marty turned to see that is was not Einstein, but another dog. It was Copernicus. "Copernicus." exclaimed Marty. He turned to Doc saying "You're not the Doc Brown of the present." said Marty. "Precisely." said Doc, "I'm the Doc Brown from the year 1956." Marty looked at both Doc and Copernicus and said "This is heavy." "Weight has nothing to do with it." said Doc. "But Doc," asked Marty, "how did you get the DeLorean? It wasn't even in existance until 1980. Plus, you haven't even started building the time machine." "All your questions will be answered when we get to my place." The DeLorean pulled out of the driveway and down the street. Boy is Doc gonna be in for a surprise. said Marty to himself.

Marty was right. The first stop that was made was where Doc's mansion was supposed to be. At 1640 Riverside Dr. But, it wasn't Riverside Dr. anymore but John F. Kennedy Dr. Doc was confused at first. He thought he was lost. Then, he realized that he was still in his future and that the street name was changed. But the mansion was gone. In it's place were two restaraunts. One of them was called "Burger King". Doc drove around via the drive-up window of Burger King looking around for any trace of his mansion but found none. "My place of residency." he exclaimed, "What happened?" "It's a long story." said Marty. He was tempted to tell Doc about the fire that destroyed his mansion in 1962 but remembered what the same Doc said. "One must not learn too much about his future." So he said "Here in 1986, you live on Elmdale Lane with your wife and two boys." "I have a wife?" asked Doc, "And two kids?" "Yeah." said Marty, "Do you remember coming across your tombstone in 1955?" "Yes I do." said Doc. "And where it read 'Erected in eternal memory by his beloved Clara'?" "Of course." said Doc, "What about it?" "Clara's your wife, Doc." said Marty. Doc looked at Marty saying "Incredible." Then, Doc remembered something. "Marty." he said, "Now I remember. Remember when I first saw you in 1938?" "Yeah." said Marty, "I do." "It was that old abandoned farmhouse out in the middle of nowhere." he said, "I would like to see what it looks like after all these years." He was interupted by a girl's voice that asked "Can I take your order sir?" Doc turned to see here. Behind him, he heard Marty saying "Hey Jen." Doc turned to Marty asking "Jen?" "Marty." said Jen, "Doctor Brown." "You know her?" asked Doc, "And she knows me?" "Yeah." said Marty, "Remember that flyer I showed you back in 1955? On the back, it read 'I love you'?" "Of course." said Doc. "This is the girl I told you about." said Marty, "This is my girlfriend, Jennifer Parker." "Glad to meet you." said Doc. Jennifer was startled. "It's a long story, Jen." said Marty. "Oh." said Jennifer. "Doc." said Marty, "We'd better go." "Why?" asked Doc. "Because." said Marty, "If we stay here any longer, we'll have to think of something to order." "Of course." said Doc. After saying their goodbyes, Doc took the DeLorean onto the street and headed off for Doc's present home. On his way there, Doc asked "Marty? Who is John F. Kennedy?" "You'll find out." answered Marty. The car continued it's way.

Doc followed the directions Marty gave him. After arriving there, Doc looked at the house. It was immaculate, and looked brand spanking new as was the property around it. They were greeted by Jules and Verne who said "Daddy, daddy." Doc looked at Marty saying "Daddy? My boys I presume." "That's right, Doc." said Marty, "Jules and Verne." Doc backed away from the boys smiling and saying "Named after one of my favorite authors Jules Verne." "That's right, Doc." said Marty. "Marty." whispered Jules, "What's wrong with Daddy?" "You'll find out soon enough." said Marty, "Is your mother home?" "Yes she is." said Jules. At that moment, Clara emerged from the house. "Emmett." she said. "This is got to be Clara." said Doc. Clara gave Doc a startled look. Then, she asked "Emmett, what's wrong?" Then, she noticed the DeLorean parked on the curb. "Emmett." she asked, "Why is the DeLorean on the street instead of being inside the lab?" "Inside the lab?" asked Doc. "Here in 1986," explain Marty, "You park the DeLorean in the lab for safe keeping." "Oh, I see." said Doc, "How do you get it in there." "You fly it in here." said Marty. "Fly it?" said Doc, "Oh yes. The hover conversion you've been talking about." "But you can't fly it up there here in 1985 in broad daylight unless it's cloaked." said Marty. "Cloaked?" asked Doc. "Yeah." said Marty, "Like make it invisible." "It can turn invisible?" asked Doc. "Yeah, Doc." said Marty, "You installed a cloaking device to make it invisible months ago." said Marty. "Incredible." said Doc. "Let's get back into the car." said Marty, "I'll show you." They did. Once inside, Marty showed Doc three buttons on the dashboard. Each button was marked. One said "HOVER". Another button said "CLOAK" and the third one was marked "ROOF." "This one's for hovering." he said, "This one's for the cloaking device and this one's for opening the roof of the lab." "So." said Doc, "To make the car invisible, I push this button." He pointed to the button marked "CLOAK." "Right, Doc." said Marty. Doc pushed the button. "Alright." said Marty, "Now..." "I push the 'hover' button." said Doc, "I know how to do that. I'll explain when I'm in there." "Emmett." said Clara, "Wait." Doc turned to Clara asking "What is it uh...Clara?" "The car didn't turn invisible." she said. Doc got out to look at the car. "Damn." he said, "This is what I was afraid of. Not all the circuits survived the test of time." Marty was still in the DeLorean when he asked "The test of time?" "I'll explain when I get in the house." Marty turned back to the dashboard and started looking around. For the first time since encountering the Doc Brown from the year 1956 he noticed something odd about the car. Parts of it looked like they've been refurbished. But the time circuits and the three marked buttons looked like they've aged two thousand years. Marty got out of the car and looked at the DeLorean. It didn't turn invisible. But the exterior looked like it had a fresh new paint job. He turned to Doc demanding "Doc! What the hell is going on here?" "Marty." he said, "Get in and wait for me." Turning to Clara, he asked "Is there another way I could get this into the lab?" "Just go up the driveway." said Clara, "Then, you could use the hovering device to carefully lift the car up to the roof and activate the opening." "Good." said Doc, "At least I had the hovering circuits restored." Marty overheard and asked himself. He did? The whole event was starting to upset him. How did 1956 Doc get ahold of the DeLorean? he asked himself, How come some of the car looks like it's been worked over and why are the time circuits and the buttons looked like they aged over a couple thousand of years. And where the hell is the present day Doc? The car turned onto the driveway. Once away from the veiw of the street, Doc activated the hover circuits and the car lifted off the ground and hovered over the roof the lab. Then, he pushed the button marked "ROOF". Nothing! "Hang on, Doc." said Marty as he reached into his pocket and produced his cellular phone. Dialing Doc's number he got Clara. "Clara." he said, "The roof doesn't open." "Just a minute, Marty." said Clara's voice. He turned to Doc saying "It's called, a cellular phone." "What kind of phone?" asked Doc. "You'll find out." said Marty. The roof opened and Doc lowered the DeLorean into the opening. Once it landed, Doc and Marty got out. Doc looked around. "So this is my lab in 1986." he said, "Incredible." "Hey Doc." said Marty, "Now we're in, how about telling me how you got the time machine..." He stopped in midsentence as he noticed Doc looking at the time train and the limousine. "These are time machines too. Right?" said Doc. "Yeah, Doc." said Marty. "And how do I get around town here in 1986?" asked Doc. "You got a car in the garage." "Ah yes." said Doc, "My Packard." "Not really, Doc." said Marty, "You sold the Packard in..." "Don't tell me." said Doc, "I'll find out what happened to it the natural course of time." "Okay." said Marty, "You're the doc, Doc." Einstein entered. "Hey Einy." said Marty. The dog approached Doc and Copernicus. "What's this?" asked Doc, "A sheepdog?" "It's your dog, Doc." said Marty. "Your dog here in 1986. You call him Einstein." Both Doc and Marty noticed that the two dogs were getting along. "Com'on, Marty." said Doc. Let's all go out into the living room." Clara was there and she showed Doc the way. In the living room, Clara asked "Can I get you anything?" "No thanks." said Doc. She turned to Marty who said "I'm fine, thank you." He turned to Doc and said "Okay, Doc. How did you get the DeLorean and where's the Doc Brown of the present?" "Future Boy." he said, "You're not going to believe this but..." "But what?" asked Marty. "But." said Doc, "The Doc Brown of this year is in Ancient Rome." "Ancient Rome?" exclaimed Marty, "If that's true. How did you know that." Doc reached into his coat and pulled out a sheet of ancient parchment. "I wrote myself a letter." said Doc, "Stuck it into the time machine. Then took the car out into the outskirts of Rome and hid it in an abandoned catacomb for myself to pick up in 1956 when I was doing some archeological digging there." Marty took the parchment from Doc and studied it. It was in Doc's handwriting. And in English. What was Doc doing in Ancient Rome and why did he hide the DeLorean and an abandoned catacomb for his 1956 counterpart to pick up? He was about to get his answer soon.
