"Day of Infamy"

by Charles A. Murphy

PLOT: The story takes place two days before Kristen Sheley's "Curse of the Great One."

SYNOPSIS: Needing a money for a Christmas gift for Jennifer, Marty goes over to Doc's to see if he could hit him for a loan. However Doc, who had installed a cloaking device in the DeLorean, has a better idea. He decides to take Marty back in time to enlist him in the Navy. Marty agrees and goes along with Doc. He gives Marty explicit instructions to send him a message, that would be held in storage by Western Union until 1985, back to Doc on the day of his discharge so he could go back to pick him up. Afterwords, Doc returns to the present and recieves the message Marty has sent him. It tells Doc that Marty has been stationed at Pearl Harbor and that he is serving on the Arizona. The note tells him that his friend will discharged on December 8, 1941. However, Doc finds the date very disturbing and goes through Jules' U.S. history book. He gets up to December 1941 and discovers, to his horror, that the day before, December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese. What's worse, the Arizona, the ship that Marty's on, was sunk with almost twelve hundred men onboard. Doc goes back there with Einstein to get Marty out of there. He, Marty and Einstein were heading back to the parked DeLorean when the bombing starts. Taking off the car bumps into something before it goes back to the future. They learn too late that the "something" was that fateful torpedo that was to sink the Arizona. Because of that, the Arizona has been spared and history's been changed-for the worse. When they arrive in 1985, the US is under a military dictatorship by one of the men that was supposed to die on board the Arizona. And after witnessing the oppression under that man's cruel dictatorship, there was only one thing to do-the most unfair of them all. Go back to 1941 and sink the Arizona during that terrible attack.

BACKGROUND: I thought of the idea while writing "Back to the Future pt V-'Joyride to the Past'" Originally, it was to have Marty, Jennifer and Jules go back in time to 1941. When Doc came back he and Clara receives a strange call. It was Jules-a 54-year-old Jules Brown. He had been homeless in Hawaii for the last 44 years because Marty was killed on the Arizona and a distraught Jennifer had committed suicide. Doc goes back there in time to rescue all three. But, during the attack, Marty is wounded. In the end it's Jennifer that goes back in time with Doc to drop the bomb on the Arizona and restore history and get back to get Marty to a hospital. All that changed while writing chapter 5 of BTTF 5 when I decided that a more detailed explanation of why Doc and Marty couldn't go back to October 26 and keep Jennifer from seeing the time machine by having the next story-BTTF 8-be a Jennifer story. So I wrote her out of BTTF 7 and only have her name mentioned. I also decided to keep Marty healthy so he could participate in Kristen Sheley's "Curse of the Great One" that occurs days later. And, as for Jules, I decided to keep him in 1985. I picked Nate Barnard as the Dictator of the United States because he's some kid who bothers me in the BTTF.COM chatroom. He asks me about my mailing address there (even though it's against the rules), on the day after Thanksgiving, someone named Steven Sides (a.k.a. Good Listener) was doing a BTTF marathon in the chatroom in honor of Michae J. Fox. He was doing the trilogy in numerical order telling me what happened next. He had to go when he was up to BTTF III when he had to leave. By then, Nate was in there, and when Phil left Nate decided to take over and run the marathon his way. He wanted to go back to BTTF II. He also ICQed me four times one day too. A complete annoyance. And a perfect part for a dictator.
