BACKGROUND: The
English dramatist and poet William Shakespeare (was the author of
the most widely admired and influential body of literature by any
individual in the history of Western civilization. His work
comprises 36 plays, 154 sonnets, and 2 narrative poems. Of his
plays, Hamlet was one the most powerful. Romeo and
Juliet was Shakespeare's first romantic tragedies. Knowledge
of Shakespeare is derived from two sources: his works and those
remains of legal and church records and contemporary allusions
through which scholars can trace the external facts of his life.
If you are wondering why Shakespeare was shocked about seeing Jennifer-a female-onstage acting out a role, that's because in Shakespeare's time they found it improper for a woman to perform onstage. Woman's roles were performed by boys or young men.
My interest in Shakespeare started back in 1970 when I saw the play Hamlet on television. After that, I started reading up on him and his plays and for the next three years, I was hooked on him.
