Chapter 5

London England
8:00 a.m.

DOC and Marty arrived for their short rehearsal for their afternoon play. Shakespeare was impressed with their acts. Meanwhile, Doc had rented a small barn to hide the DeLorean in knowing that the cloaking device could not stay on indefinitely.

At the same time, Sir Tannen and his men had replaced the water subsitute with the poison. It was put where the actor playing the apothecary would be waiting for his part.

It was 10:30 in the morning before Shakespeare said "Alright. You both are ready for this afternoon's play. The performance commences at 2:30 this afternoon." Marty approached Doc saying "Hey Doc. I just thought of something." "And that is?" asked Doc. "What about Shakespeare?" asked Marty, "Was he told not to leave Hill Valley." "Great Scott!" said Doc, "You're right. I just remembered the police sergeant telling me that Shakespeare wasn't to leave town." "Now what do we do?" asked Marty, "I hope they don't come to your house asking for his whereabouts." "When we get back," said Doc, "we'll have to convince someone to drop the charges against him." "I guess I'll have to talk to Jennifer about this." said Marty, "Explain to her that it was William Shakespeare who attacked her, explain everything to her and get her to drop the charges." "Well with Jennifer that's easy." said Doc, "But if there's anyone else pressing charges, chances are is that person doesn't know that time travel exists. So chances of the charges being dropped are not good." "Holy geez." said Marty, "This is heavy." "I know, Marty." said Doc, "It is heavy." "Doc." suggested Marty, "Couldn't we just go back to May 7, 1987, keep Jules and Verne from getting into the DeLorean and going back here to 1597 to abduct William Shakespeare? That way, none of what has happened would happen?" "It would work." said Doc, "But Jules and Verne would learn nothing of what they did. It would only cause them to repeat the same mistake later. Plus, I don't relish the idea of preventing an incident based on knowing what had resulted from it." "Doc." said Marty, "You took me back to the future with you to prevent my son from going to jail." "That was different, Marty." said Doc, "That was future history. We're talking about our past." "Which is right now in the future." said Marty. "Whatever." said Doc, "Marty. I've warned you about disrupting the space-time continuum for your own gain. Now the same must apply to Jules and Verne. After this ordeal is over, punishment will be meeted out for them, and as for the charges, well something will have to be thought of." Marty paused for a moment before saying "You're the doc, Doc." "Good." said Doc, "Let's get some rest." At that, the two left. On their way out, Doc told Marty. "Marty. You go ahead of me. I've gotta go do some looking around here." "Alright, Doc." said Marty. After that, the two went their separate ways.

It was almost showtime. Marty hadn't seen Doc in four hours. At last, Marty found the Doc. He had a bottle and a glass in his hand. "Doc." said Marty, "You haven't been drinking, have you?" "Marty." said Doc, "You know I can't handle my own liquor. This is for you." "Is it?" asked Marty. "Yes." said Doc as he handed Marty the glass and poured him the drink. "Here's to your health and the health of the actors." he went onto say. "Doc." said Marty, "I shouldn't be drinking." "This is non-alchoholic." assured Doc, "Drink up." Marty held it up. Toasting Doc, he said "Here's mud in your eye." Marty drank it. Afterwords, Doc said "Now let's get go to the Globe Theatre and perform." The two turned to head to the theatre.

Marty felt nervious kissing a boy even if he was pretending. I'll be glad when I go back to the future, he said to himself, This is nuts. When the final scene of the last act, Marty had the apocethary's poison in his hand. Behind the scenes, Sir Tannen watched vigorousely as Marty said "'Here's to my love.'" After he drank it, he went onto say "'O true apothecary! The drugs are quick.-This with a kiss I die.'" At that, his character Romeo had expired. The play went onto it's conclusion. But when it came to the curtain call, Marty failed to get up. Doc went over to arouse Marty. "Marty." he said. Nothing. There was a groan in the audience. The actors surrounded Marty. Then, Shakespear said "O villainy! Ho! Let the doors be locked. Treachery! See it out." Then, Doc turned to the actor playing the apothecary and said "You gave Olivier the drink. Didn't you know that there was real poison in it?" "I tell you, I'm innocent." said the actor playing the apothecary. Shakespeare said "Send for the magistrate." Doc turned to look at Marty who came too. "What the hell happened?" he asked. The other actors looked at each other saying "He's alive." Marty got up. As he did, Sir Tannen came out of nowhere and examined the jar. "There's your suspect." said Doc. "Now wait a minute." said Sir Tannen. The magistrate came in with his men. The magistrate bore the resemblance of Mr. Strickland. Tannen turned to run only to be tripped up by Marty and land in a cart of manure. "Good work, young man." said the magestrate, "Sir Tannen, I arrest thee on the capital treason of attempted murder. Doth thou have anything to say?" Sir Tannen was pulled up out of the mess. Then, he said "I hate manure." "Let thee know thy betters," said the magestrate, "that if you disciplined thy son instead of committing this assassination on his replacement, thy future would've been better. Away with him my lieges, away." Tannen was escorted out of the theatre. Marty turned to Doc saying "Doc what was in that drink." "Poison." said Doc. "Poison?" exclaimed Marty. "Yes." said Doc, "Remember earlier today when I said I was going to do some looking around here?" "Of course, Doc." said Marty. "I went back to the actor's dressing room, checked the cast list, looked up who played the apothecary and checked his dressing area. After smelling the bottle he gave you, I knew that there was something wrong. So, I went back to our lodging and concocted an anti-toxin for you to drink. When you drank it, the poison only served to knock you out temporary. Even made it look like you were dead." "I see." said Marty. "When you came too," said Doc, "it caught the real suspect off guard and caused him to run up onto the stage and check out the poison. That's how I got Sir Tannen nailed." "Pretty clever, Doc." said Marty. Then, Shakespeare approached the two saying "Gentlemen. That was a brilliant performance. And brilliant work finding Olivier's would-be murderer, Burton." "The pleasure's all mine, Mr. Shakespeare." said Doc. "I would like thy two to stay on as my actors on a permanent basis." said Shakespeare. "I'm afraid that's impossible." said Doc, "But I know someone who is willing to please." Enter a man resembling the likes of Marty. "Mr. Shakespeare." said Doc, "Meet Sir McFly." "Mr. Will." said Sir McFly, "I'm glad to make thy aquaintance sir." "Are you?" asked Shakespeare. He produced a piece of paper for Sir McFly saying "Read thou this challenge; mark the penning of it." Sir McFly did. "Out loud." insisted Shakespeare. Sir McFly did. "'How oft when men are at the point of death have they be merry?'" he read, "'Which their keepers call a lightning before death.'" "Now without looking." said Shakespeare. Sir McFly looked away from the paper and at Shakespeare saying "'O, how may I call this lightning? O my love! My wife! Death, that hath suckt the honey of thy breath, hath had no power yet upon thy beauty.'" "Now pretend thou art looking at the body of Juliet." said Shakespeare. Sir McFly did. "'Thou art not conquer'd;'" said Sir McFly, "'beauty's ensign yet is crimson in thy lips and thy cheeks, and death's pale flag is not advanced there.'" "Stop." said Shakespeare, "That is excellent. Where has thou learn to act?" "I had it for a long time." said Sir McFly, "But I was kept from the stage by intimidation by some knave." "And who performed this intimidation?" asked Shakespeare. "Why, Sir Tannen's son, sir." said Sir McFly. "The son of the same Sir Tannen who is now been disgraced?" "Aye, sir." said Sir McFly. "We should discuss this more." said Shakespeare, "Care to join me for some ale?" "Why thank you, Mr. Will." said Sir McFly. "Doth thou knowest the Bore's-Head Tavern?" asked Shakespeare. "Aye." said Sir McFly, "But I was kept out of there by Sir Tannen so many times I have lost count." "Then come." said Shakespeare, "I shall entreat thee." He turned to Doc and Marty said "Thy two can accompany us too." "No thanks." said Doc, "Me and my friend have to go now." "But it was educational." said Marty. The four laughed. Then, they went their separate ways.

10:50 p.m.

After the DeLorean returned Doc and Marty back to their own time, Doc activated the roof opener by pushing the roof button on the dash board. After the car was set down, the two time travelers got out. Clara was there. "I gather that, you returned Shakespeare safely back to his own time." she assumed. "Correct." said Doc, "But now there's the matter of what happened tonight." "Why?" asked Clara. "After I bailed out Mr. Shakespeare," said Doc, "The desk sergeant advised me that he wasn't to leave town. We'll have to convince Jennifer to drop the charges." "We'll have to convince everyone to drop the charges." said Marty, "Where's the phone?" "Marty." said Doc, "You're not going to call Jennifer now and get her to drop the charges." "Emmett's right, Marty." said Clara, "She might be still distraught over what's happened. You'd better wait until tomorrow." Marty paused before saying "You're probably right. Listen, it's getting late. I'd better get home now." "You'd better change first." said Doc. Marty looked down. He was still wearing the Elizabethan outfit he had on when he and Doc went back in time and said "Oh, that's right." After that, he went into the bathroom to change. Afterwords, the three said their goodnights and Marty left.

Saturday, May 9, 1987
Hill Valley, California
10:28 a.m.

The first thing Marty heard was his radio going on and blaring "'Take me away, I don't mind. You'd better promise me that I'll be back in time.'" He was hearing Huey Lewis and the News. After turning it off, the phone rang. Marty answered it. It was Jennifer. "Marty." she said, "Doctor Brown called me this morning." "He did?" asked Marty. "Yes." said Jennifer, "He said he tried to call you first so you could talk to me but your mother told him that you were still asleep so he called me instead. Listen, Doc told me everything that's happened and I decided to drop the charges against...against" Then, her voice went into a whisper as she said "I can't say it now. Dad's waiting for the phone." "Okay, Jen." said Marty, "Hey Jen, are you going to do Juliet today." "Yes." said Jennifer, "I'm up to it." "Okay." said Marty, "I hope to see you there today." "I hope so too." said Jennifer, "Goodbye, Marty." "Good bye, Jennifer." said Marty, "Love you." After he hung up, the phone rang again. Marty answered it. It was the Doc. "Marty." he asked, "Did Jennifer called you?" "She did." said Marty, "And she's dropped the charges against William Shakespeare." "So did Mr. Clark, our director." said Doc, "I explained that Jennifer's assailant had this strange case of schizophrenia and had the delusion of being William Shakespeare. Just like that charactor who pretended to be Teddy Roosevelt in Arsenic and Old Lace." "That's great, Doc." said Marty, "It's good to be in the clear without explaining that you're a time traveler. Hey Doc, about Jules and Verne." "Don't worry about them, Marty." said Doc, "I've got them cleaning out the bathroom, both bedrooms, doing the laundry, and raking the leaves in the backyard as a punishment for what they did. They're not allowed to watch TV, go out to play and the only time they could use the computer for the next month is for homework." "I hope they learned their lesson." said Marty. "They did." said Doc, "Marty, is Jennifer going to be at the play today?" "She said she's up to it today." said Marty, "Especially after what's happened last night." "Good." said Doc, "I've got to go now. See you this afternoon at the theatre." "Alright, Doc." said Marty, "Bye." After he hung up, he went into the dining room, he overheard Dave tell Linda "For Greg or Craig and the trifing of either of their favors, hold it in fashion..." "Dave." said Marty, "What the hell are you telling Linda?" "I'm doing my impression Laertes." said Dave. "I'm supposed to be Ophelia." said Linda, "He's to be careful about both Greg and Craig. Just like Laertes told Ophelia about Hamlet." "I think you've got a long ways to go." said Marty. After that, he sat down for a late breakfast.
