Jefferson Slope

a little history

The slope on the north west side of Catoctian Mountain near the town of Jefferson Maryland has been used by RC fliers since the mid sixties and hang gliders flew there in the Seventies. Although not currently used by Hang Gliders the slope is actively used by members of CASA which leases the site for all types of RC slope flying.

Gene Lindsay sent me this photo of his son Dan and his Cirrus taken in 1977 at the Jefferson Slope. "This was the perfect airplane for the slope in those years, it was large (you could see it) and strong (landed safely). We felt that we were flying wave lift from south mountain which was at high altitude, so once you attained the wave you wanted to stay awhile."

These gliders were called "Rogallo" wings, the first ones called "standard" Rogallos had equal length leading edges and keel tube to form a 80 degree angle triangle when viewed from above. Most of the ones in the pictures were called "advanced standards, because the keel tube was a little shorter than the leading edges, and the nose angle was a little wider.
