SINCE 1989, AIS HAS AUTHORED OVER 200 INDEXES TO SCHOLARLY BOOKS PUBLISHED BY MAJOR ACADEMIC AND INSTITUTIONAL PRESSES. Clients have included the Smithsonian Institution, Harvard University Press, Stanford University Press, University of Chicago Press, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Press, University of Minnesota Press, University of California (UC) Press), Brookings Institution, the World Bank, Island Press, and others.
A book is often first encountered by serious readers through its index. The goal of a fine index is to increase access to the book, to extend shelf life, and to enhance marketability.
Celeste Newbrough, Director of Academic Indexing Service since 1989, served as Chief Knowledge Officer for Cubedex, Inc., a reference firm serving university libraries. She has taught at City College of San Francisco. She is a member of the American Society of Indexers. Her article The User-Friendly Index appearing in Keywords, Journal of the American Society of Indexers was cited by the British Indexer as an oustanding reference on index development.
