"Simply Scottish" originated in Cocoa Beach, Florida in 2002 through a Scottish/Irish collaboration of an Irish ex-priest and a Scottish oil worker. Concentrating on the good old Scottish Ballads, ‘Simply Scottish’ became an intriguing mix of Scottish history and Celtic entertainment to many Americans, many of whom themselves were ‘exiled’ to Florida (especially in the winter months) and who had an abundance of Scottish heritage.
With the migration of the Scottish oil worker to Houston, Texas in 2006, Dave Hutton the founder of ‘Simply Scottish’ found his true Celtic-American Home. The Duo of Dave and Julian Tribe present the traditional side of Scottish singing with a true, clear voice and a strong melody to back it up.
As well as performing as a Duet, Dave and Julian regularly perform at Griff's Shenanigans Cafe & Bar and the Kelvin Arms Scottish Pub as part of the Celtic Chorus of Houston. Highland Games and Celtic Festivals are definitely their forte.
Dave Hutton
Born in Perth, Scotland, Dave’s maternal grandmother played a big part in introducing him to the Scottish songs of the day. “My Granny was always singing or whistling a Scottish tune. She didn’t have a radio or TV, she just made her own entertainment as she went about her chores. I don’t remember her having a great singing voice but she could fair belt out an Andy Stewart number, never the less”.
The structure of ‘Simply Scottish’ comes mostly from an accumulation of singing at school and in later years at Burns Suppers and St. Andrews balls in oil field compounds from Borneo to Nigeria.
Dave’s biggest musical influences were definitely the folk duet, The Corries. “My mother would drag us, screaming, to every Corries' concert within a 100 mile radius of Perth, which if you think about the size of Scotland, must have been the whole country.”
Other influences were Andy Stewart, Kenneth MacKellar and Calum Kennedy, three great Scottish performers who helped mold Dave’s style of singing in to what it is today. Modern-day Scottish singers like the ever-popular Alex Beaton bring to audiences the more traditional style of Scottish singing that Dave likes to emulate. “Alex’s performances really bring home the days of my early youth and remind me of the pleasures of listening to true Scottish songs.”
Julian Tribe
Julian Tribe hails from Oxford, England and started playing guitar in 1963 at the age of 12. His earliest musical influences were the Shadows and later the Beatles. As a child, he grew up watching the popular Scottish TV entertainment program, The White Heather Club. This weekly BBC-TV program featuring Scottish music and dance, hosted by Andy Stewart, ran from 1959 until 1968. It gave Julian an innate appreciation for Scottish songs.
Julian immigrated to Canada in 1974 and moved to Houston in late 1981 where he still resides. He is a petroleum reservoir engineer for one of the major oil companies in Houston and has advanced degrees in chemical and petroleum engineering.
Julian specializes in finger style acoustic guitar and only uses a pick when strumming. Aside from being an accomplished guitarist, he is also an expert in MIDIa. He has been playing with the Men of Houston - Morris Dancers for 20 years and has played with the Houston Irish Session Players for 7 years. In 2003, he started leading the Celtic Chorus of Houston and started playing with the English contra dance band, Fish & Chips, in 2005. He met Dave Hutton in early 2007 and they first performed together in April of that year.
Some current reviews
….“A fresh new face on the Houston Celtic scene. Dave has a great repertoire of traditional songs, he can dance, he wears a kilt ..... and he's Scottish!... you certainly get your money's worth from 'Simply Scottish'...."
Sia LeBelle Beaton,
Singer/Songwriter
“….'Simply Scottish' is a great new duo featuring lead singer Dave Hutton and guitarist/vocalist Julian Tribe. A native Scotsman, Dave sings the traditional music of his homeland in a high clear voice that rings out with passion. Julian is a native Brit whose uniquely exuberant guitar playing and singing are well-known from his many years on the Houston folk scene. It is a real plus to Houston and Texas that both of these world travelers should have alighted here, to share their music with us”.
- Bill Galbraith & Emily Standish, ‘Constant Billy’
".....'Simply Scottish' has re-introduced traditional Scottish ballad singing to the Houston scene. It's great to hear a true Scot singing his country's songs."
Carol Robertson,
Houston Highland Games Association
“….Dave Hutton has a mellow voice and with the authentic Scottish accent the songs of Scotland come alive! Julian Tribe has a fun way with the guitar and he's kept the Celtic Chorus of Houston singing for several years now. This dynamic duo has been the heart and soul of many a Celtic ceilidh, party, or other gathering. If you get a chance, catch their act.”
