The skeleton of a domestic cat contains more than 230 bones (the human skeleton, although much larger, contains 206 bones). Almost 10% of a cat's bones are in its tail, which is used to maintain balance.
A kitten's skeleton consists of about 250 bones, but a number of these fuse together as the cat grows.
Cats have 30 vertebrae--5 more than humans have. They do not have a collarbone, so they can fit through any opening the size of their head.
