University Rapid Prototyping Programs

North America
S to University of I...

Saddleback College The college has received an NSF grant to prepare course modules in time compression technologies for industry, including RP, solid modeling and related methods. Also provides related course work.

San Diego City College Advanced Technology Centers 3DP MJM LOM The Advanced Technology Center at San Diego City College was established to explore new and innovative ways in which companies could utilize advanced information technologies and advanced prototyping technologies to reduce time to market for critical industry sector items as well as introducing students to Rapid Prototyping.

San Diego State University SLA The Facility for Applied Manufacturing Enterprise (FAME) provides Industry / University collaboration. Programs are also available in mechanical and system design, measurement, simulation and control, materials and processes, fabrication, test and quality assurance in addition to stereolithography services.

South Dakota State University SLA 3DP The Great Plains Rapid Prototyping Consortium provides RP and design-related services to local industries.

Southern Methodist University Research Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM). Solid free form fabrication by 3-D welding and by high power laser beam using a method similar to Laser Engineered Net Shaping (TM) (Trademark of Sandia National Labs. and Sandia Corp.) Development of hybrid rapid prototyping machine based on 3-D welding and milling.

Stanford University Functional mesoscopic structures, shape deposition manufacturing (SDM), and laser deposition of metals. Selective deposition of living cells has also been pursued.

State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook FDM SLS SUNY has an extensive RP program with both fused deposition modeling and selective laser sintering technologies available. Work is also being carried out in spray metal tooling.

Temple University / Tyler School of Art CAD/CAM and RP instruction for jewelry designers and model makers. Contact Prof. Stanley Lechtzin.

Tennessee Technological University The Manufacturing and Industrial Technology RP Laboratory supports academic engineering programs with rapid prototyping and related services.

Texas State Technical College Marshall Established a program in 2004 to provide practical educational experience in RP and related technologies.

Tufts University Research centers on Rapid Thermal Prototyping, a robotic welding-based technology. Work is also being done in conjunction with Northeastern University to create functional mesoscale and microscale devices with ultrasonic rapid manufacturing (URM). The technology uses multiple material foils and fibers bonded in layers that are contoured by diamond scribing.

University of California, Irvine Liquid Metal Jet Printing (LMJP) is being developed at the Droplet Dynamics and Net-Form Manufacturing Laboratory and is similar to ink jet printing where individual molten droplets are controlled and printed to specific locations. Similar and/or related Work is also being carried out at MIT, the University of Texas, and the University of Toronto.

University of California at Berkeley The Integrated Manufacturing Lab's CyberCut project is developing an Internet-based service for rapid part design and fabrication. Also working on folded-sheet tsructures to fabricate meso-scale robots and mechanisms.

University of California at San Diego Tele-Manufacturing and scientific visualization applications.

University of Central Florida FDM SLA MJM The RP Lab at the UCF is located in the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences. A multitude of CAD/CAM, software packages are available as well as three types of rapid prototyping technologies: stereolithography, Thermojet, and FDM. Secondary operations include investment casting and soft tooling. The lab supports teaching and research in design courses and the newly emerging field of Biomodeling, and also provides services to industry. Also see http://www.mmae.ucf.edu/~rplab/

University of Connecticut Selective Area Laser Deposition process, and laser densification of multi-material dental restorations.

University of Dayton LOM of ceramics and composites, liquid crystal photopolymers, LOM process modeling and medical modeling. More recently the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) has become involved with electron beam curing of polymers with possible application to high speed RP.

University of Delaware Rapid Prototyping of Assistive Devices for the handicapped.

University of Florida A group headed by Dr. Ashok V. Kumar is working on electrophotography-based RP. Electrophotography is the technology used in photocopiers. See also grad studentAnirban Dutta's description

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Exploriing robotically-controlled deposition of colloids to make mesoscale periodic structures and tissue engineering scaffolds.
