W.M. Keck Border Biomedical Manufacturing and Engineering Laboratory The W.M. Keck BBMEL at the University of Texas at El Paso utilizes stereolithography and fused deposition manufacturing technologies to fabricate anatomical structures for research and surgical modeling applications. In addition to RP, the lab has computational, fluid measurement, polymer and machining facilities. These include 3D laser scanners, particle image velocimetry (PIV) and LDA systems, dynamic mechanical analyzers, CNC machining, and other resources for complex modeling. The laboratory also does research in cardiovascular hemodynamics.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology This page describes drug delivery technology that makes use of the MIT-developed three dimensional printing process. The technology has been licensed to Therics, Inc. Tissue engineering work is also being carried out at MIT in conjunction with Harvard Medical School and Children's Hospital, Boston.
Milwaukee School of Engineering This is an article describing medical applications of rapid prototyping at MSOE by Debbie Adler and Sarah Vickman. It also provides a very good summary of the field as a whole.
Phidias Consortium A European industry / university medical technology collaboration with goals of demonstrating the value of anatomical models in surgery and addressing quality assurance issues in such applications. The European Commission also provides a description of the project.
Politecnico di Torino (Italy) The university is applying selective laser sintering to anatomical modeling and prostheses. Their web page gives general background information on RP in medicine and there is research contact information. [Web site seems to disappear for extended periods.]
Pontific Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) (Brazil) The university is working in conjunction with the Brazilian Government agency, CenPRA, in the use of RP biomodels in TMJ surgery and other oral and maxillofacial surgery applications.
University College London and UCL Hospitals (UK) The Medical Graphics and Imaging Group's work spans many areas of 3D medical imaging. The group specializes in maxillofacial surgery planning, and cranioplasty prosthesis manufacture as well as orthopedics, and graphics-based training, including interactive anatomy and surgical procedures.
University of Leeds (UK) Centre of Medical Imaging Research has a wide-ranging program and is also associated with the Phidias Network and the CARP program, a major European industry/university collaboration.
University of Sussex BioMedical Modelling Unit (UK) The Bio-Medical Modelling Unit is an application centre of CAD, FEA and RP in medicine. The potential aim is the integration of medical imaging with manufacturing technologies within a clinical environment. Collaboration with other industrial, clinical or research institutions is a main focus for the identification and implementation of new applications.
