Ala Ortho (Italy) Ala Ortho has launched the first range of orthopedic implants in series production using rapid manufacturing technology. Arcam's EBM S12 machine is used to make such products as Fixa Ti-Por (TM), an acetabular cup with integrated network structure for improved bone in-growth.

Biocomposites The company manufactures bone graft materials and orthopedic screws and similar fastners. RP is used for customization and rapid turn-around.

Dayton labs pushing high-tech envelope Author: Jeff Louderback. From the March 12, 1999 Cincinnati Business Courier. This article describes numerous RP and related developments in the local area. One of the more interesting descriptions concerns masks for burn victims produced by Total Contact, Inc. The company directly fabricates custom masks using stereolithography that fit precisely for use in a patients erect posture position and lead to less scarring.

Design and development of bio-medical devices using rapid prototyping techniques Researchers at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, describe the use of selective laser sintering to develop a drug delivery device. Sintering parameters are varied to provide controlled porosity and take advantage of the unique features of the process.

Honeywell International A new miniature color-display technology, developed under DARPA sponsorship, was prototyped in part using FDM is described in this article. The headset enabled military surgeons to do arthroscopic knee surgeries in the field for the first time.

World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC) In the last few years, integrated efforts to develop and promote additive technologies have been undertaken by the European community. The research programs include both academic and commercial organizations in many countries with much emphasis placed on direct manufacturing and biomedical applications. Extensive preliminary information about the numerous efforts underway in Europe is available from the World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC), a US government-sponsored initiative, which has been conducting an assessment.
