Health safety and environmental aspects of SLS?

Hello:

I am currently assessing the Health, Safety and environmental aspect of SLS technologies for my company and I am finding it hard to establish if there are legislation or standards for the process.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Regards
AC

Hi AC:

I would doubt that there is much - or perhaps anything - that is specific to SLS, or RP in general, regarding such issues. I would think that the main concerns would be ones that would be common to any machinery or equipment manufacturers such as meeting basic UL, EC and MSDS and other generally applicable standards.

Equipment that uses finely divided powders, powerful lasers, etc., such as SLS might also have some extra requirements to protect operators and service personnel.

Your starting source for information on this should be the manufacturers themselves. Ask them what standards they have to meet to comply with safety and environmental issues. They probably list particular applicable specs in their manuals and literature.

For example, if you were making medical equipment here in the US, you'd have to meet UL544 specs and that fact would be prominently displayed on the equipment itself. Of course, you could make equipment that didn't comply - but no one would buy it.
