Respected sir,
Myself and three of my colleagues are very much interested in developing an interfacing
software which takes in the CT/MRI scanning data and convert it into an STL file..
The present problem we face is that we are not able to get an example of the CT/ MRI
scan data and hence, we don’t know what format they are in exactly. The WIPRO GE medical
systems here in India (manufacturers of scanning machines) aren’t aware of these data
types as they just import from some foreign country where their head office is
located.
It would be very much useful if you could kindly help us with the scan data and brief
us about how to go about our task. We are literally asking for your guidance so that we
could reach a level from where we could go by ourselves.
Eagerly looking forward to your mail to get shape to our dreams!
Thanking you.
Yours faithfully,
CP
Dear Mr. / Ms. CP:
I would suggest several things. First, is that this problem has been worked on many
times by both commercial software providers and university researchers and is at a high
state of development. You should always try to find out what has been done before you
begin so that you won't waste your time.
-
Look on our web site under the "Software" listings for packages which translate CT and
other medical formats to STL. There are quite a number. Visit the companies web sites
which will discuss what file formats are available for translation. Then you can search
for the definitions of those formats fairly easily on the web. You might also contact
those companies which are often willing to help students.
-
Check our bibliography (Mom) and you will find numerous papers on the subject which
discuss both specialized and commercial applications in this area. Note that we don't
supply papers, but there is a page on the site that gives you ideas for finding them. Of
course, from these papers you will also be able to find out more about likely places to
uncover more information. The University of Zurich has a group which is very versed in the
area (among many others) and they might help you.
-
Post your needs to the RP Mailing List. (See the page for information sources on our
site.) Someone on the list will know exactly what you need, I'm sure, but since this
question has been asked several times, I believe, you may not get an answer. Download the
last couple of years of postings from our site and scan them for pertinent information
about this.
That ought to get you going and I hope you find this a help.
Best regards,
Ed Grenda
