Nonprofiter seeks to help designers take on rapid prototyping. Authors: Victoria Rivkin and Deborah Snoonian. Architectural Record, Dec., 2003. Kevin Rotheroe has established a nonprofit practice called the Freeform Research Studio, which he anticipates evolving into a think tank for digital design, advanced manufacturing techniques, and mass customization. The technologies have the potential to remove many of the constraints that existing fabrication methods impose on designers.

Rapid Prototyping Branches Out Author: Peter K. Sheerin. CADENCE, May, 2003. RP is slowly creeping into architectural applications and curricla as leading-edge practitioners such as Frank Gehry use it to model structures which might not be otherwise feasible. Recent trends towards lower prices and color are other important factors.

Treasures reborn out of dust. (News release, March, 2003) Fraunhofer Institutes (Germany) and several museums have collaborated to develop the Ecomarble process to reproduce statuary artifacts from otherwise-wasted marble dust. The method uses reverse engineering scanning and ProMetal RP technologies. In addition to reproducing and protecting fine art objects, the process has potential in decoration and architecture.

An Architectural Lilliput; Erecting great structures on a small scale. Author: Laurie Kerr. Wall St. Journal, Jan. 29, 2003. The economics and business aspects of architectural models. Particular emphasis on the WTC design competition and creation of models using RP.

Extreme 3D Art. Author: Dan Collins. Computer Graphics World, May, 2002. A survey of how many art forms and media are being influenced by modern 3D engineering tools. Many exapmple are shown such as the use of devices initially developed for reconstructive breast surgery, to create characters for gaming, digital elevation models from the U.S. Geographic Serviceto make interactive sites with very detailed topography, RP systems used by sculptors to make tangible, non-traditional full-color objects.

(Math Trek) A Snowy Twist. Author: Ivars Peterson. Science News Online Feb 16, 2002. A snow-sculpting team led by mathematician Stan Wagon of Macalester College and artist Bathsheba Grossman created a 12 foot replica in snow of one of Grossman's bronze sculptures originally fabriicated using RP. The work, called A Twist in Time, has unusual symmetries and doesn't seem as though it could possibly remain standing when made of such a fragile substance.

RP Becomes An Important Tool for One Artist's Work. Author: John Connolly. Time Compression Technologies, Oct., 2001. The artist scanned real three dimensional objects such as skulls and and then introduced distortions and modifications to the data which were subsequently produced as models by an RP machine.

Red-Hot Prototyping. Author: Chris Tome. Computer Graphics World, June, 2001. Designers used RP technology to generate physical pepper models for use in a miniature set for a TV commercial.

Manufacturing Freeform Architecture From ArchitectureWeek.com dated 9/27/00. Dr. Kevin Chaite Rotheroe says, "the digitally based convergence of representation and production represents one of the most important opportunities now facing the profession. ... New means of production have emerged that can enable new aesthetics in post-industrial digital societies."

Screen Gems. Author: Audrey Doyle. Computer Graphics World, July, 2000. After thousands of years, craftspeople are completely changing the way jewelry is being created. The entire process of design is going digital from inception to final fabrication.
