May 2009

Hi all - time just flies when you're having fun!  Now with Facebook, MySpace, etc. people are getting in touch with eachother, as a group, in other ways.  I started this site over 10 years ago as a project in my WebDesign course and it is amazing how the Directory has grown and alumni have found eachother, but now there are easier and more direct ways to do that.  I will continue to post emails, update the Directory and write a newsletter, if I get any news, that is.  :-)  So keep up the emails.

Saludos, Bobbie

March 2008

There is a group from the 1950's who are planning two reunions as follows:
Subject: Fw: CELEBRATE OUR 1958 CLASS REUNION-50 YEARS!
A CELEBRATION FOR ALL CAMPO ALEGRE AND COLEGIO AMERICANO 1958 GRADUATES, and anyone else that would like to attend.   COME TO ATLANTA, GEORGIA ON MAY 15 - 18, 2008 TO CELEBRATE OUR GRADUATION

Do not postpone visiting with your classmates and schoolmates who were once the most important people in your life!

While I know that the Venezolano Americano Reunion is going to be in July, there are several of us that are not going to be able to make that reunion, due to other obligations.  Therefore at the last minute I am trying to put together a mini reunion, and everyone is invited.  I do know that there will be several people that would like to attend the fun in Atlanta that are not in the graduating class of 1958, but please join us, all are welcome.
.
Atlanta will be the site due to its accessibility from everywhere, including Caracas, and there is plenty to do and see.  It is YOUR reunion with your classmates and amigos.

Whether you attend or not, you will be talked about so it is best to be present to defend yourself.

COME, ENJOY, RELAX. You only need some money, a few days and, maybe, some throat lozenges, to rekindle all those memories and vague recollections which linger in our heads and hearts.

There are many of us that have not seen each other for 50 years! It is time! The hourglass is dwindling its "future" time.

I will send the details of the hotel when I am able to give them a count of those attending. Then I can bargain for the best room price possible. You now have my e-mail. Please respond ASAP, I need all responses by April 1, 2008 with a YES    NO    MAYBE        (maybes are OK if you are unsure at this time. I will continue to send you the information)

MAY 15 - 18, 2008   ------------      ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
SEE YOU THERE -  HASTA PRONTO

October 2007

Oh my, another year!
Apparently on my Home page the links were not working, I hope it hasn't been for too long!  I've been making changes and there have been glitches.  Sorry!

Hal Carim sent me the names of the 1959 graduating class! (Seniors )   Thanks so much Hal.  In Hal's July email (emails)  he writes:

If the venerable web master is still active how about adding a two cell picture slot beside each name for us to
contribute (voluntarily) on how we left and where we have arrived....
So this is a call for all to send two photos, then and now.  I'll start looking for my photos to start it off.  (Stay tuned)  Meanwhile look through old albums - it might even be fun!  (Recordar es vivir).

I'm very happy to announce that my son and daughter-in-law made me a grandmother for the first time, on September 17th in Miami!!! Her name is Sofia Isabel, and of course I made a website for her!  http://sofiaisabelrotundo.home.att.net/
Everybody is well and happy!

Hasta pronto, Bobbie

November 2006

I'm sorry to let you know that Gary Solana ('62) has passed away.  He never fully recuperated after a very bad car accident about 6 years ago and was living in California with his father (samsolana@cox.net).  We wish his family comfort and peace at this difficult time.

March 2006

Hello ... it's been awhile and many hurricanes later ...
There are rumblings of several reunions this year again.  Besides the same two of last year (see below) a new group http://groups.msn.com/campoalegrecaracas is looking to get together in July in Miami.  The Campo Alegre 50's group is getting together June 1st in Tucson, Arizona and the ECA 60's group are getting together in mid July in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

July 2005

I'm sad to report the passing of Carol Gulledge, (a graduate of ALC 1961) in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida of an aneurism during her visit with her sister Sheila.  Our thoughts and sympathy are with her family.

March 2005

There's another reunion coming up July 7th in New Orleans, it is the Campo Alegre 50's (Venezolano/Americano) alumni reunion.  I won't be able to attend this year, but if you are interested, go to Harry Baya's website for details: http://boppers.net/New_2004/main_1.html

Also still active is a group mostly from ECA, mostly graduates from the mid sixties.  They are planning an informal meeting in Ft. Lauderdale
this summer.  Their website is:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eca/

July 2004

Harry updated his site and included photos of the Tampa reunion: Here for Tampa and Here for the home page.

June 2004

Just got in this week from a long weekend in Tampa, where I attended the Campo Alegre 50's (Venezolano/Americano) alumni reunion.  We were several who attended other schools also, mainly Colegio Americano.  It was a lot of fun, I made many new friends and there were quite a few whom I remember from social and club events back in the late fifties and early 60's in Caracas.  The organizers, Mary Wilkes, Tanya Lopez and Fred Hill were spectacular hosts, helped by Harry Baya, who provided the souvenir magnet and entertained us Saturday night with a sing-a-long song he wrote for this occasion.  During the day we toured, (Ybor City was especially interesting) at night we partied and inbetween we'd meet at the hospitality suite.  The committee worked hard and did a great job.   I posted some photos at this yahoo site, and I hope to see photos on Harry's site soon.  The committee is already planning next year's reunion, probably for July, in New Orleans at a 5 star hotel for an unbelievable price.  They will be letting us know.

Keep me posted if you have any reunions coming up, or would like to organize one.  Send me emails and I'll post them on the site.  Remember to check in once in awhile and look in the various pages for new postings.

P.S.  When writing to this site, please put ALC first on the subject line.  We get an exaggerated number of junk mail, and I want to be able to identify your mail quickly.  Thanks.

January 2004

Happy New Year!

Lately there has been "chatter" on reunions coming up this year.  Campo Alegre (ECA) class of '69 are meeting in Las Vegas the weekend of August 6 - 8.  If you are interested, please contact the 2004 Las Vegas Reunion Coordinators:  Tyson Gair: tysong@ext.msstate.edu and
Charlotte Creswell Brown: cbrown15@pacbell.net.  ECA class of '69 keeps up a message board at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eca/

There is a reunion in Tampa, FL June 18 - 20th for kids that graduated from Hi school up until about 1963.   You can check Harry's website at: www.boppers.net\tampa he is going to post the info there.

Since June we have had a few postings in "lost & found", "emails" and "directory".  Keep me informed, I love to hear from you!

Bobbie

P.S.  When writing to this site, please put 'ALC" first on the subject line.  We get an exaggerated number of junk mail, and I want to be able to identify your mail quickly.  Thanks.

June 2003

Hello again.  The Campo Alegre reunion is on as apparently most of you received an email from Julio M. de la Mata with the information.  I won't be able to attend, but hopefully we'll be able to see the photos soon after.  In May there was a Colegio Americano reunion in Houston.  There are tons of photos on Harry Baya's website:   http://boppers.net/caracas .  I remember some of the alumni and it was fun looking at the photos.  Keep the email coming.  Anybody interested in getting together for a picnic this summer in South Florida let me know and we'll organize one and hope it doesn't rain as it did in 1999! (see photos)

Bobbie

February 2003

Good grief, it's been 10 months since I've updated this page!  At least I have kept the "emails" page up to date and I hope you all have been reading it.  If you have been keeping up, you know about the Colegio Americano's excellent website and their recent reunion.  You can view their public website at: http://colegioamericano.home.mchsi.com/and through there you may get into the private site by writing to Paul Blomberg.
There is a reunion in the planning for Campo Alegre, Colegio Americano and La Castellana alumni on the weekend of July 25, 2003 at the Yankee Clipper in Fort Lauderdale.  Karen Kitchen Purtell from Campo Alegre (Karn952@aol.com) is in charge of organizing, you can refer to her email.
I plan on attending and I hope to see many of you there, specially those living in South Florida.  (Thanks to Bonney Brown (Thom)for the info )

Do write in with any new information or other reunions - keep in touch.

Bobbie

April 2002

Hello classmates, so much has happened around the world and in Venezuela that I have been busy keeping in touch with family and friends in Caracas.  I have decided to put the emails ALC receives on another page.  CLICK HERE to go to the email page, and thanks to those who wrote in.  I have received many e-photos of the Caracas march on April 11th and the days following, so if I have some extra time I'll try getting another page for that.  Even when I don't write a newsletter, I still update other pages, so do check in from time to time.

December 2001

May your holidays be joyful and may the new year bring us all peace and happiness.  Happy New Year!

October 2001

I just received an e-mail from a friend of Jim Reece.  I remember Jim well and am very sad to hear of his illness and am sorry I did not get the chance to see him again.  Here is the e-mail:

Subject: About Jim Reece
Date:    Fri, 12 Oct 2001 09:35:40 EDT

I'm Roger Arndt (Varkus@aol.com) and at Jim's request I'm sending this blanket e-mail to bring everyone up to date.  I've cobbled this address list together rather poorly and I would ask that all of you review the addressees for omissions, forward this letter to them and send me the address as well.

Jim is not doing well.  His lung cancer is very aggressive and the doctors have abandoned all curing efforts.  Effectively Jim is in a hospice-like situation in the hospital.  He has no pain, little concentration and sleeps a great deal.  It is a heart-breaking situation.  Estimates range from days to two weeks.

Jim no longer reads e-mail, however I have been printing all notes of support and reading them to him (or telling him that so-and-so wrote) during his brief lucid periods.  I'll continue to do that, but please understand that much more than a sentence or two causes him to nod off.

Phone calls are also a problem.  His cellphone (between 9 and 9 CDT) is probably best.  He won't answer but whomever does will be able to judge his condition at the moment.  (214-418-3233)  My cell is 404-307-0595 if I can be of any assistance.

July 2001

Hi all - things have been slow this year, but I do have a bit of news from alumnus.  Mercie and John Lucas have a new grandchild, Ivana, now 5 months old - congratulations!  Gary Solana, who had a very bad accident a few years ago is now walking again after his last operation and physical therapy - great news Gary, keep it up!  We do have a few new directory listings, take a look, keep in touch.  Only one person has mentioned getting together this summer (Nuria Barbe) - so I guess we don't have quorum!  Never mind, just keep sending in news, bios, email addresses and let's keep this alive!  Have a good summer.

Bobbie

March 2001

Hello - It's Spring again - I'm sure those of you in the north are very happy about that!  It's been rather brutal up there lately.  Betsy Foster just discovered us and sent in a bio - take a look.  She was very happy to have found the e-mail address of her then good friend Jim Reece and they have corresponded - I love when that happens!  We might want to think about having another picnic this summer.  We had one June '99 (read about it below), we were just about getting started when a real downpour came along and cut the picnic short.  If anyone will be in this area summertime and interested in attending, please let me know and we can plan accordingly on another family picnic reunion.  Any suggestions?

 January 2001

Happy New Year all.  May it be a good one.  Just got a new bio in from Bonnie Brown, go here to view bio - thanks for the input!  I would like to receive a few more this year and even update ones we have.  This site is two years old now, so we need new info.  Also, I want to open a new page for letters from you telling us what's been going on with your life - so come on, animanse, it'll be fun to read and to write also.  I'm waiting...

December 2000

Hello school mates.  Another year has gone by - whoa Time, not so fast...
We have a few new names on the directory list, lost and found listings and a couple of bios.  Not too bad, but could be better - let's get those bios written this year!  You all want to read about what's happening with classmates, but are a teeny bit lazy about getting information out yourselves!  Write me for heaven's sake.
Hope this year has been kind to you all and that next year be filled with happiness and good health.
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.

Bobbie

October 2000

Fall is back and so is school and the snowbirds are starting to come down to South Florida.  (Which means longer waits everywhere!).
Through the grapevine I heard that Marie Deleuze (class of '63) will be visiting her sister Viviane in Pompano Beach soon.  I hope to see her while she is here, I haven't seen her since school days.  Viviane (also '63) made a delicious lamb last week for Henry Lucas ('62) and I (Bobbie Cruz '61).  She and her husband Gerd have a lovely home on the Intracoastal.
Alvaro Mantilla ('61) and his girlfriend Anita, along with Henry and Bobbie (celebrating 5 years together) visited Sanibel Island on the west coast of Florida.  Wonderful place.  We also visited Marco Island and Captiva.  We are definitely planning to stay in Capitva next time - so quaint.  John Lucas ('60) and his wife Mercie are expecting their second grandchild - a girl.  Congratulations!
We have new bios.  Also, we need news, so please write a paragraph or two and let us know what you're up to.  Have you seen any classmates lately?  Share with us your happenings.  (Come on, help me out here!)

Bobbie

June 2000

Anita is in the news again!  She's featured in the June/July issue of People en Español under the
Truinfadores section with her picture and all.  Again, congratulations.  Anita also writes: " I went to the Las Vegas Reunion of the Creole Petroleum Corporation Annuitants, and saw people from the Venezuelan oil camps whom I had gone to elementary school with and had not seen since. It was amazing, and some of our ALC alumni might want to know about this if they don't already. Randy Trahan has a website with information on it.  (home.att.net/~amuay) I think I recognized some names of people who went to ALC."

If anyone is planning a reunion - just let me know and I'll post it on this website.  In July 99 we posted a call for a 1970 class reunion for June 2000.  Hope that is a reality this month, and if so, I'd like to post photos and commentaries too.  Keep me informed.

April 2000

Spring is here again and everybody seems to be pretty busy as ALC has had few e-mails lately.  We do have 70 alumnus in the directory at this point though, which says a lot for word of mouth advertising!  And talking about advertising, we are very proud of one of our own alumna, Anita Muller (Santiago), class of '68, who was featured in last week's Time magazine under "People to Watch."  Congratulations Anita!  Click here to read the article.  (You can also read her bio on this website.)
I may as well toot my own horn also!  I just graduated from Lynn University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Behavioral Science.  Since there's not much one can do with that, I'm going on for a Master's in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.  It's never too late!
Till next month.
                              Bobbie

March 2000

Hi alumnus - a few new names in the directory, lost and found, and bios.  Take a look.  Haven't received the scanned yearbook yet that I told you about in January.  It's probably more complicated than Anita thought.  Send in more bios and info and keep in touch.

January 2000

Feliz Año!  Happy New Year!
It'll take awhile to get accustomed to those three zeros!
We have heard from Maureen Malloy ('66) who got in touch with us as well as her husband Chuck Clausen who went to Escuela Bella Vista in Maracaibo - there is a link to his web site, check it out!  Anita Muller has suggested we scan all the yearbooks into the site.  Great idea!  She will scan her yearbook and hopefully soon we'll try it out here.  Anybody who can scan their yearbook on to their own website, I can then make a link to it here.  It would be fun to see the yearbooks with dedications and all.  See you next month...
                               Bobbie

December 1999

Three months have passed since my last Newsletter.  Time flies when you're having fun!  Look around, there are new postings in "Lost & Found", "Bios" and "Directory".  Please send in information, gossip, comments, photos - whatever.  I need your input.  Let's have another picnic...(before the rainy season).
The best of wishes to all for a wonderful holiday.  See you in Y2K.

August '99
We have new additions in 'Bio' and 'Directory' pages - take a look!  We really need some more bios, it's always interesting to read what our friends have been up to, so come on guys, stop procrastinating!  Thanks to Denise Dasen for the class of 70 list and Anita Muller for 68 list.  All we are missing now are years 57, 58 and 59.  So if any of you know anybody with any of these yearbooks, please let me know.  I hope this site has brought friends in contact with each other again.  If you are planning a reunion and want to announce it on this site, just send me the text and/or design and I'll publish it.  See you in September...

Bobbie

July '99
The picnic was great.  We rented a pavilion infront of the horse corral, to the delight of the kids.  We had some old American music and also Venezuelan music for atmosphere, and we even had a piñata ready.  Unfortunately, two hours or so into the picnic, as the Lucas family was getting into a game of "bolas criollas" it started to pour.  We managed to eat and drink for another hour, but we had to leave earlier than expected.  We did have a good time however and hope we can do this again in the dry season!  Please click on the camera above to view the photos.

Congratulations to Mercie and John Lucas for the birth of their first grandchild, Christian Daniel Flossbach Lucas born on June 30th.

June '99
The picnic is on!  I reserved a very nicely situated pavilion with a lot of green space and a view of the horses.  There are various activities, including horse back riding.  (Go to the park's website).  Everybody in the Directory will be getting an email, but if you are not in the Directory, email me.  Go to the "invitation" and information.  I'll be in Caracas the first part of June and hope to convince the Caraqueño alumni to join us at the picnic...para cuando lo vas a dejar?...

Bobbie

May '99
Vacation time is just around the corner and our plan to meet is still on.  Keep open the weekend of June 26/27.  We are looking for a park with all the facilities somewhere between Miami and Boca.  In order to make it easy, we will plan on a family picnic, everybody bringing their own food, drink and games.  Bring your kids, grandkids, and significant other or come alone.  There are at least 10 in the Directory who live in Florida, so I expect to see all of you then!  Alumnus from CIC, Colegio Americano or Campo Alegre are welcome, just email me and send me your info.  I will be emailing those on my Directory listing as soon as I make reservations and I'll send you all the pertinent information at that time.  Email me if you have any questions.
                                                         Bobbie

April '99
More alumni have found our site and we even have another year on the Seniors page, thanks to Helena Roche ('69)!  Remember to look in the Directory and Bios and see who's appeared recently and don't forget to spread the word.  Hopefully I'll have time to look for new photos soon, but meanwhile anyone can send in photos as did Jim Reece recently (go there).
It will soon be summertime and consequently many of you will be travelling around and getting together with old friends.  Bob Galan ('67) will be in Boca Raton, Florida during the last week in June and we thought we'd like to get together with all who are in this area at that time, so let us know and we can organize something simpatico.  Also if you're planning a reunion, remember to send me the info and I'll publish it here.  Till next month.  Take care,
                                                        Bobbie

March '99
Spring is here and once again we initiate a new cycle.  Time for beginnings.  This month look for the Spring Equinox (20th) and the blue moon (31st)!
We have ten new alumnus aboard!  Look for them on the other pages.  Tom McCarty, an ALC and CIC alumni found our site.  It seems we were both developing a website at approximately the same time and now we're linked to eathother (CIC alumni site) - check it out, you might see someone you know! (Links)  He knows where Betsy Jennings is (Lost&Found).  Cliff Jennings (Mrs. Jennings son) sent me the 1971 seniors list - thanks a lot!  But so far, only one alumni has sent in her bio.  There are five Lazio sibling alumnus, '69 to '78, listed in the Directory too.  Welcome all.  Remember to look at the message board de vez en cuando (accessed through the "welcome" page").
I will be in Caracas from the 19th to the 29th of this month and I'll get in touch with those I know.
Be well.  Keep in touch.
            Bobbie

February '99
It's Valentine month - extra hugs and kisses for loved ones.
Hope you've looked at the new bios that came in since my last newsletter.  It's great to hear about our classmates, very interesting and varied lives have resulted since graduation!  I still expect to receive many more this month.  (That means you).
Last Sunday we had a boat outing to Sands Key with Alvaro '61, Bobbie '61, Henry '62 and Viviane '63, Viviane's husband Gert and Henry's son John.  Hope to get the photos developed and on the site soon.  Sheila was not able to join us, but she'll go next time.
Gary Solana '62 has sent an e-mail on his own, so he's on his way to recovery and hopefully we'll be hearing from him more often.  Gary, I want you to search for alumni through the internet as soon as you are well enough to do so.
Bob Galan '67 (living in Manila now) is taking his family to China over the Easter break...they'll be going to the Great Wall, the Forbbiden City, Tianamen Square, Summer Palace, Terra Cota Warriors, etc.  Sounds fantastic.
Remember you can leave messages on our message board (instructions below). Keep in touch.

January '99
Happy New Year to all.  May we all be blessed with health and happiness.
There have been changes to the web site.  We have a different address (please bookmark it) and I have included a message board accessed through the Welcome page and a Photo page that you can access from this page. I'll update both pages regularly and change the photos as I receive them.  So send me photographs, specially when two or more alumnus are together.  (Meanwhile I'll try to figure out how to improve on the quality of the photos on the page).

I'm still waiting for more bios.  Please send a anecdotal paragraph as I just 'copy and paste' on to the 'bios' page - - - so maybe Bill and Raul can spice up their bios a bit!!  Anyone who wants to change theirs, just email it in.

We have a message board now and you can reply to a message that is already there or post your own. Just type in your name and click 'enter', no password is necessary.   Let's try and see how it works.

Welcome to all the new alumnus.  Claudia Zobel and Martha Monroe, let me know where you are, so I can include the city and country in the "Directory".   Richard Zobel - hi!  Many people have told me you returned to Caracas, so let us know how it feels to be back.

Ok, that's all for now - have fun.
                                            Bobbie

December 98
In Summer of 1998, five alumnus of Academy got together for dinner in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida:  Alvaro Mantilla ('61), Viviane Deleuze ('63), Sheila Gulledge ('63), Henry Lucas ('62) and Bobbie Cruz ('61).  Alvaro had been in touch with Viviane and Sheila on the one hand and Henry and Bobbie on the other.  We brought our yearbooks to the restaurant and spent the evening swapping photos and stories.  We met again with some of our children at Bobbie's house in Boca and with yet another alumni, Robert Huertematte ('64) who came with his daughter, and Andres Lucas, who was there without his father John ('60)!  So we had five years represented at the BBQ, from the class 1960 to 1964.   We plan to get together from time to time.  Living in the gateway between Venezuela and everywhere else makes it easier for us to meet up with many people from our past.  With this website we hope to see and get in touch with more of our classmates and friends.

In February 14, 1998 Lee Montanaro ('64) married Marta Marona in Miami, FL.  They had a lovely wedding at The Doral Country Club with Henry Lucas as the best man and Bobbie Cruz the maid of honor.  Gary Solana ('62) was in Miami from Washington D.C. and met up with his father Sam and cousin Manny from San Diego and they all attended the wedding.  A good time was had by all.

Unfortunately weeks later, Gary Solana had a terrible car accident in Washington D.C. and was in intensive care for about six months.  He had a hip replacement and is now recuperating in his father's house in San Diego, California.  He still needs another operation and physical therapy, but we hope  that soon he will be helping out with this site.

We heard that Mercie and John Lucas are expecting their first grandchild. Congratulations.  Their daughter Diana is the responsible one !
