ABOUT THE LIVE SELECTIONS
Updated January 13, 2007

The LIVE selections were recorded from 1956 to 1958 from FM radio in the New York City area. My good friend Sammie Kiamie (RIP) recorded these using a Tapesonic tape recorder (tube version). These were recorded at 15 ips (inches per second), but later on to conserve tape, he switched to 7 1/2 ips. I'm so glad he used the faster speed because the live quality is really preserved.

In those years, there was no such thing as FM stereo. The sound you hear will be free of all the noise and distortion the FM stereo process adds. The recordings sound as though the tape recorder was right there on the dance floor.
