TEAMWORK, by Tucson trainers/authors Stewart Nordensson and Lydia Kelley has been published by TOP DOG Publishing Company. This nonfiction book is a dog training manual for people with physical disabilities. Chapters include; sit, down, stay, come, controlled walk, attention, giving APPROPRIATE PRAISE, feeding, equipment, using treats the proper way, and other things having to do with forming a dog to be a well-behaved pet. The book addresses people who are in manual wheelchairs and powerchairs. Although the training theories are the same the applications are quite different. Someone that is unable to speak is able to train a dog but has to take different approaches. People that have to walk with the aid of devises have to train in a different way then people that don't use devises. Someone that has a lot of involuntary movements will have to take another avenue. If a person is going to train his dog by using food but is unable to hold it, he will learn how when he read TEAMWORK. That person might have to use a friend as training equipment. The person that is not able to reach the dog will have to elevate him. (I took a dog and taught her to get on steps in order to teach her the "down" command.) We take into account that each person and dog is different. People with the same disability are affected in different ways. We recognize that there are many ways to train a dog. Just because we suggest one way of training doesn't mean at that is the only way. TEAMWORK tries to give the reader the knowledge to train a dog in mostly positive ways. If people follow this book they will be able to teach their dogs to how to learn and they will both will be ready for TEAMWORK 2 which should be available next year. Right now TEAMWORK is available only through TOP DOG Publishing Company in Tucson. TEAMWORK cost $14.95 $3 for postage and handling from TOP DOG Publishing Company, 800 N. Swan, Tucson, AZ 85711.
