Abby is a shy mastiff, having experienced the whole puppymill thing as a puppy until the age of 6 months and has retained her shyness into adulthood; she has her PhD in shyness! Abby likes to be the only pet and wants to be the adored queen of her home. In her prior experiences, she has shown intolerance of the other mastiff in her space, and chases off cats. Abby just needs to be the only pet because she likes her comfortable space to be her own. Abby does not at all have this attitude toward humans. She loves humans and expects to be loved and treated like a queen-princess by them. She lights up most with children and is excellent with them. This does not mean she will run up joyfully to everyone that stops by. After you & she has bonded, Abby will definitely be all excited about you coming home from work. As for new people, she will show a quiet curiosity, but will not approach because her shyness takes over. She is most likely to approach children over adults. Abby is excellent in the house. First of all, she needs to have her safe place that she can always count on to go to when she feels an overwhelming sense of shyness coming on, like when you welcome some friends to your home. Abby wants to have her home routine down pat. Once you establish her potty schedule and her feeding schedule, she will be the one to let you know if you are a minute off of schedule. She also will communicate to you when it is time to open the door for her to let her out and to let her in. Her new mommy and daddy will have to work her into her routines using the leash at first, and after a while, she will have it down pat. Abby is not at all adverse to you trying out new things, but you need to go as slow as molasses because her shyness will inevitably take over if you try to push her too far. You must take some time to build her trust in you, but the more patient and loving you are, the easier it is for Abby to want to trust you. Abby knows you are trying to have fun and gain enjoyment for the both of you, but she takes a lot longer to feel the joy you want her to. Just keep at it, but never get frustrated & always keep positive for Abby. Keep Abby on a rationed feeding schedule or she will quickly realize that the food is ever flowing and her body will not tell her when to stop in order to stay fit and trim. Abby likes to move around when she is outside and a careful feeding plan can help her retain her activity into her senior years. Abby would probably also enjoy a daily walk routine in a natural environment if you can provide it. It would take some time to get her used to it, but if you keep at it, I would think that she would expect to have her walk every day with you. Abby is super duper shy about water bowls. It takes her a long long time to decide to finally drink from one. In the meantime, we are adding water to her meals so that she does get some moisture. In addition, at this time of writing, Abby still will not eat from the food bowl when it is placedon the stand and I walk away. She wants me there to hold the bowl for her so far. Hopefully, she will gain the confidence to eat and drink all by herself from the bowls on the stands. While Abby waits for her home, we will provide her loving sanctuary and care until she can go to her forever home. Abby is a beautiful big girl and we will tell her her weight soon. Abby's lower jaw is a lot longer than her upper jaw and sometimes her lower teeth will stick out when she closes her mouth. Many times her tongue protrudes out when her mouth is closed as well.
