WORKLIFE PAGES
...being some chronicles relating to what I do for money in this world...
"I'm going to be a happy idiot
and struggle for the legal tender
where the ads take aim and lay their claim
to the heart and the soul of the spender
and believe in whatever may lie
in those things that money can buy
thought true love could have been a contender
are you there?
say a prayer for the Pretender
who started out so young and strong
only to surrender
~ Jackson Browne ~
ok... I start a new week at a new job, the first actually on the job really since last week just four partial days of training... bringing determination to learn how to do the job should help... they broke us up into teams of four and unfortunately my manager is brand new and not very confident in what he does which means I'll have to train myself and help him learn to do what he's supposed to do too... intellectually, I understand the process and the partnership we're supposed to develop... he appear very good at doing the part of the job I am supposed to do (probably why they promoted him), but not experienced or smooth at the job he's supposed to do (which isn't good cuz I'll be judged on how he finishes up on what I've done)... the best I can do is go in positive and supportive, learn fast, and hope for the best...
one of the people on my team is someone I think I'd like to know better as we seem to have some common experience and history... but work friends can be precarious so I'll play it by ear and see how it goes... there are a few people there I may be able to relate to on a more personal level... nobody seems overly interested in talking to me though... it's run way too much like a sales office (while they keep emphasizing we are actually interviewing)... the pace is way too inconsistent to get into a smooth pattern going so far (which makes learning a challenge), but they say that will improve... it would be real nice if someone was interested in knowing me too J
but wait, this is the worklife and not the lovelife section (sadly, in case you haven't noticed, I don't have a lovelife section... kinda doh) J
smile, though your heart is breaking J
but for the record, the people are inspiring more garden growth... it could be just being around new people... and maybe it'll get real J
back to work itself... I can see it may take a week or two to learn the procedures well enough to feel confident at the job... hopefully my new manager will learn with me... he's the boyfriend of one of the directors and that may be why he's getting ahead of his competency level so quickly (he's only been there a month and has only average performance statistics and presentations skills compared to the rest of the people there... every tenth word he says is ummm)... I need to look past what I consider to be a promotion decision I wouldn't have made and help him gain the confidence and speaking skills as quickly as possible if (with or without his cooperation... and he does not appear to be the kind of guy who would not consciously accept much advice or instruction from a subordinate)...
alas, I would probably have similar experiences in most jobs I take... the specifics of the job tasks may be new, but the managerial experience I've had will give me a very different perspective from the managers in their twenties who are taking their first managerial steps... hopefully this company will realize that and utilize me where I can do the most good instead of at the bottom (everyone starts there, the company president told me they don't want to waste management people there, which was the same thing that the director who hired me told me, which is the main reason I took the job)...
so anyway, in worklife, it's time for some dues paying J
