Fetal Crunch
this may be just a hunch
but you seem in a fetal crunch
get up off the floor
come down from your shelf
if you want to be happy
you've got to start with yourself
people don't need wings to fly
just a peaceful heart
that is what life's all about
and where we must start
it's a choice we make inside
to run to hate to cling to fear
or to believe that love's alive
and waiting everywhere
holding on to yesterday
is how to make fear grow
the secret to a peaceful heart
is found in letting go
if you want to enjoy lunch
get out of the fetal crunch
get up off the floor
come down from your shelf
if you want to be happy
start with yourself
something we all know
but sometimes we forget
and then when we remember
we learn how to regret
and then if we still linger
in guilt and self-pity
whatever we look at
looks pretty - well, what rhymes with pity
some might say New York City
but in truth if we wallow long
everything looks shitty
so trust your friends when they tell you
your head is in the sand
when a friend kicks you in the butt
it's just to lend a hand
who else will be there when you fall
to pick you up again
to snap you out of your malais
that's the "job" of a friend...
no matter what it takes
no matter the mistakes
when you doubt the intentions
of the attempts a friend makes
you test how much the caring
is daring to risk more
the friend who risks losing the friend
is a friend to the core
that's what a friend is for
consistency in deed is at the core
of whatever is true
and that might not be the same
for me or you or you
so read the words and choose the lies
and ask for love again
and pretend everything's alright
because you count to ten
the only ones you're fooling are
those who want to be fooled
life is a composition book
unwritten and unruled
if your panties are in a bunch
get out of the fetal crunch
get up off the floor
come down from your shelf
if you want to be happy
stop feeling sorry for yourself
and we could be wrong about everything
but here's a truth on which I depend
it's when you find a peaceful heart
that you can find a friend
then you can be a friend
