Appearances

appearances matter so much in this world
it really isn't funny
it's amazing how differently you treated me
when you thought I had some money
remember what you said to me
how you used to call me honey
you cared so much, you'd do anything for me
when I had a lot of money

well I hope the truth doesn't hurt you too much
  honey...

they'd line up at my door cuz I had a generous reputation
all smiles and applause and praise for everything I did
every one a promise of doing your best to be my friend
what they did best was how well you kept it hid

your prejudice
your avarous
your snobbery
your robbery
your heart of lies
your alibis
dishonesty
hypocrisy

and you'll probably get the next one to believe you really care
but all your really care about is how and where and with whom you appear
all you care about are appearances
when the money's gone... you disappear

appearances matter so much in this world
it really isn't funny
it's amazing how differently you treated me
when you thought I had some money
remember what you said to me
how you used to call me honey
you cared so much, you'd do anything for me
when I had a lot of money

well I hope the truth doesn't hurt you too much
  honey...

the best thing that could have happened to me
was to give it all away
because now for the first time in my life
I know what made you stay

and all that time I wasted believing
you really cared about me
I don't have to go on wasting my time
paying for your shallow fantasy
you can have your precious superficiality
what you'll never understand is honesty
nothing can remedy your kind of poverty
but I'm richer than I ever was for now I see

your prejudice
your avarous
your snobbery
your robbery
your heart of lies
your alibis
dishonesty
hypocrisy

and you can fool yourselves into believing your really care
but all you really care about is how and where and with whom you appear
all you care about are appearances
when the money's gone... you disappear

appearances matter so much in this world
it really isn't funny
