Teacher Information Page

This webquest is designed as a culminating activity for 5th grade students studying weather and climate. Here's how you can support your students through the activity:

  • Test out the site before using it with your students. If you find any problems, please email me. In several steps students will have to download and print out graphic organizers and charts. Make sure that Adobe Acrobat is installed on your computers since these files are in PDF format.

  • Review your guidelines for printing information. For example, you may want to print out and duplicate the forms in advance. If so, be sure to let students know that they don't need to print the forms. You may also want to limit the number of information pages they may print since kids can easily get printer happy when they go online!

  • Consider having students set up a Destination: Climate Zone folder where they can store all information and materials related to the project.

  • Have students begin by reading the introduction and reviewing their task.

  • Allow time for students to read about the various climate zones and submit job applications to you (steps 1 and 2).

  • After students are assigned to a team, allow them to choose a partner from within that team. You may want to allow some students may choose to work alone; however, your struggling students either need to be in a small group with the teacher or working with a partner. Each pair of students may select a different location within the zone.

  • In Step 3 students will have to choose a location within their climate zone and have it approved by you. Make sure that the location is within the zone and will be a large enough city to have weather data available. If students are unable to find weather data for that city they will need to choose another before too much time passed.

  • After the locations are selected, students may progress through the remaining steps in order. Each member of the team will complete the individual assignments, but the entire group will collaborate on the final presentation.

  • You may want to use the Evaluation Rubric to arrive at students' final grades for the project. You may also want to have them use the Project Self-Evaluation to reflect on their own progress.
