Ireland’s Mark Carroll signs up to Run
32nd International Ras na hEireann

Ireland’s best ever middle distance runner Mark Carroll today announced
that he would compete in the 32nd International Ras na hEireann to
be held January 7th 2001 in Dunleer County Louth. This will be Mark Carroll’s
first time competing in the Ras na hEireann. Over the past couple of years Mark has broken the following records:  Frank O’Mara’s 5000M record with a time of 13:03.  Eamonn Coghlan’s 3000M record with a time of 7:30.  John Treacy’s 10,000M record with a time of 27:44 This year Mark also beat world cross country champion,
Belgium's Mohammed Mourhit when he won the European 3000M indoor
championship. Mark had planned on being in Ireland with his family
for the New Year. When his coach James Harvey heard that the Ras would be held
on January 7th, they both decided that this race would be perfect for Mark’s race schedule.
Harvey states “Mark will use this race as a test of his condition in January over
the country and we will make a decision after this race
if the world cross country in Dublin is a viable option for Mark. Mark will be in great
condition in January and this date gives us a great
opportunity to get a race in over the country against a great group of international athletes” Mark Carroll states “I am delighted I will get the opportunity to run in Ireland in the Ras na hEireann.
I have always followed the results of
this race and have always been impressed by the quality of the athletes they have managed to put together in Dunleer.
I will be delighted to run
for my country in Dunleer and hopeful Jim and I will be able to make a final decision in Dunleer
regarding the world cross country championships.
I am excited that the world cross country is coming to Dublin and I am hoping I will be able to
participate as part of the Irish team.” Race director Larry Mcguill is elated that Ireland’s number one man will be running the Ras.
Larry McGuill states “This will be the best excitement
we have had since Catherina McKiernan ran the Ras in 1998. Catherina drew a crowd that exceeded 5000
spectators that day and we hope the supporters of Irish athletics will turn up again in numbers to support Mark.
We will put together a great field of international athletes for the 2001 Ras. ,br> All of Dunleer will be behind Mark and all of the Irish athletes when they race in Dunleer.” Two years ago Sydney gold medallist Millon Wolde was 2nd to another Sydney Olympic finalist Richard Lima and
last years race was won by Leonard Mucheru who beat Charles Kamathi. Kamathi ran 26:51 in Brussels for 10,000M
in 1999 and no one has run faster since. These fine Kenyan athletes went 4th and 7th
respectively at the world cross country in Portugal. The Ras na hEireann was founded in 1970 by race Director Larry McGuill.
In recent years Larry McGuill
has elevated the event to one of the top cross country races in the world. Additional information on Mark Carroll is available on the web at: http://www.flynnsportsmanagement.com/
