About Dr. Alley

In 1950, Dr. Alley graduated from Union Springs High School. After high school, he went to Auburn University to study veterinary medicine. At Auburn, Dr. Alley was the business manager of the Plainsman, president of Blue Key and the Superintendent of Political Affairs.

spent their childhood working on the farm and raising show steers for their 4-H Club projects.

In fact, one of their steers won the Grand Championship at the 1946 Birmingham State Steer Show.

After receiving his D.V.M., Dr. Alley went to work with the United States Department of Agriculture as District Veterinarian. He worked with veterinarians, livestock producers and poultry producers throughout the southeastern part of Alabama. Later, moving to Michigan to work as a Brucellosis Epidemiology specialist and attend Michigan State University to gain further knowledge in Epidemiology.

After 3 years, Dr. Alley wanted to be closer to Bullock County so he could help his brother with the family’s cattle and poultry farm. Therefore, he accepted a position in Brentwood, Tennessee as the Regional Epidemiologist for the USDA. While in Tennessee, Dr. Alley met his wife, Eleanor. His former classmate from Auburn, lived next door to Eleanor, and thought the two would make a great couple. He introduced them and two years later they were married. Eleanor’s father, a Methodist Minister, married them on June 18, 1967.

After their wedding, the couple moved to Auburn where Dr. Alley worked as the Extension Veterinarian for Auburn University and Eleanor taught 1st grade at Cary Woods Elementary School. As Extension Veterinarian, Dr. Alley was responsible for the Educational Programs for Animal Health and Continuing Education for Alabama Veterinarians. He traveled all over the state working with Alabama veterinarians and animal producers.

In 1971, their first daughter, Meg was born. Three years later, Jina was born.

In 1976, the family moved to Montgomery so that Dr. Alley could work as Brucellosis Coordinator with the USDA.

In 1979, Dr. Alley was appointed to the job for which he is best known: State Veterinarian of Alabama. From this position, he worked very closely with the Alabama Poultry Association, Alabama Cattleman’s Association, Alabama Farmer’s Federation, Alabama Veterinary Medical Association, Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine and Nursing.

In February of 2001, Dr. Alley stepped down from his position as State Veterinarian. Since then, he has worked with the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association as their Director of Governmental Affairs and is the Secretary of the United States Animal Health Association.

Dr. Alley remains very active in the agriculture industry and his family life. He enjoys visiting both daughters, Meg, who lives with her husband in Daphne and Jina who lives with her husband and daughter, Devin in Tuscaloosa. He and Eleanor are members of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church and volunteer for many of the church’s ministries. Dr. Alley is also a member of the Montgomery Rotary Club and is a Paul Harris Fellow.
