Agriculture Commissioner

In our opinion
05-31-2002

Alabama's commissioner of agriculture and industry is tasked with inspecting and regulating everything from gas pumps to chicken feed and fertilizer. The commissioner also helps maintain a safe food supply, a daunting chore in the face of new bioterrorism threats.

Republican Dr. J. Lee Alley is far and away the best candidate for this office. He recently retired as the state veterinarian after 22 years and has advanced degrees in epidemiology from Michigan State University, public health administration from Vanderbilt University and microbiology from Auburn University. His resume is an impressive array of experience, awards and appointments to important posts. He grew up on a farm and continues to farm himself.

While many candidates for the office say they want the post in order to improve food safety, Alley is the only candidate with the experience to do it. His opponent has no background in agriculture and farming. The only experience Richard M. Nixon can cite for the post is the four years he has spent as a Pell City restaurateur.

Dr. Alley, as the state veterinarian, headed the largest division in the Agriculture Department. He wants to upgrade the inspection process for our food as well as monitor and eliminate infectious animal diseases. During his tenure as the state veterinarian, he worked to eradicate brucellosis and tuberculosis from Alabama's cattle.

With his impressive background, Alley is more than suited for this office. Alley has dedicated his career to the public with more than 40 years of service. He deserves to become the next commissioner of agriculture and industries. He deserves your vote.

If Alley wins the Republican primary, as he should, he will face one of three Democrats - Nathan Mathis, Ron Sparks or Jacky Warhurst. Mathis and Warhurst are farmers. Sparks has served as the assistant commissioner of agriculture to Charles Bishop for three years. He has no background in agriculture.

They all have campaign pledges. Mathis said food safety is his first priority. Warhurst wants to lure new agri-industry to the state. Sparks said he wants to help farmers compete in a global economy. The field is a toss-up, but the edge goes to Sparks because he has worked in the Agriculture Department under Bishop.

Agriculture and
Industries: Republican
Dr. J. Lee Alley is well-versed on all the traditional duties of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, and he is the best qualified candidate to deal with some of the new duties the department must address in modern world - like the threat of bioterrorism and controlling livestock diseases like foot and mouth.
He's spent 22 years as state veterinarian, a job that deals with disease control, not doctoring sick critters.
In addition the things the department must do, like inspecting everything from store scales to gasoline pumps, and checking expiration dates for food on store shelves, Alley has ideas for things it could do, like helping to find foreign markets for Alabama's agricultural products.
Alley's knowledge of the duties of the office, along with his experience and ideas make him the best choice for commissioner. Vote for Alley in the Republican primary.

Agriculture and
Industries: Democrat
The Democratic race for commissioner of Agriculture and Industries includes Ron Sparks, currently an assistant commissioner in that office; Jacky Warhurst, who is Franklin County revenue commissioner; and Nathan Mathis.
The Times makes no recommendation in the race.

Huntsville Times May 29th 2002

The Times recommends J. Lee Alley as the Republican nominee for commissioner of agriculture of industries. It declines to endorse in the Democratic primary.

Alley, a former state veterinarian, is being challenged by Richard M. Nixon, who has no previous campaign experience. Alley was the state vet for 22 years and would bring a wealth of agricultural experience to the post as well as experience in the agriculture agency.
