Can you write a technical article? Something that is old hat to you may be a revalation to someone else. Jot it down and mail it to me. Don't worry about spelling and grammar - I'll clean it up. The address is 9 Keppen Trail, Greensboro, NC 27410. The mail is checked almost daily.

Going to Mount Airy?

If you are going to the Mayberry Days Parade in Mount Airy on September 25th, contact Chris Bunting at 336-783-0258.

In the past, the Tarheel miata Club has provided the convertibles for the Andy Griffith, Barney Fife, and other look-a-likes, but this year we have decided not to make participation an official club event, partly because we've also got the rallye this month. But the parade will still be held and you are invited to enjoy the many events, food and crafts that will be on exhibit during the festival.

It's Rallye Time!

Please come and rallye with the Tarheel Miata Club!

What's a rallye? Never been on a rallye? Ohhhhh, you are in for a treat!

There are differnet kinds of rallies. For example, there are poker rallies, and TSD (time, spedd, and distance) rallies, but this is a rallye that will envolve gimmicks.

Okay fine, but what is a gimmick rallye? Well, it is like a treasure hunt in a car. the rallyemaster spends a lot of time preparing the written instructions and questions. On rallye day, we'll all meet for the drivers meeting to receive general instructions on rallying, and the numbered route instructions for this particular rallye. The numbered route instructions contain questions , and the contestants try to find the answers to the questions as they travel. At the end of the rallye, we'll meet at a restaurant for a time of good food and good fellowship while we tally up the scores.

If the rallyemaster has done his job, nobody will get lost, but there are plenty of trick questions, and part of the fun is trying to figure out the rallyemaster's devious mind. Nobody ever gets a perfect score. Previous experience is helpful, but once I saw two little old ladies driving a Buick take second place in a rallye sponsored by the Tarheel Sports Car Club. Neither of the ladies had ever rallied before; they were just out for a lark on a Sunday afternoon!

You'll need a driver and a navigator. Bring something to write with; and, on. Fast driving is discouraged, and you'll actually be able to find the answers to the questions better if you drive slowly. No drugs or alcoholic beverages are allowed.

We'll meet on Saturday, September 18th, at 2 o'clock in the shopping center parking lot behind Burger King at Exit 121 off of I-85 in Greensboro (that's the exit for Emerald Pointe Water Park). We'll have the drivers' meeting at 2:30, and the first cars will be off at 3 o'clock. The rallye will take about two and one-half hours, and we'll finish at a restaurant near I-40 in Greensboro.

Invite a friend if you like. You do not have to have a Miata - any kind of vehicle that can be legally driven on the highways of North Carolina is eligible (even if at a disadvantage!).

Club Birthday Party a Success!

Tom and Donna Byrd were our gracious host and hostess for the annual club birthday party on July 17th at their beautiful home on Lake Norman.

Most oh the club caravanned to Lake Norman from greensboro, led by Paul and Karen weller over some interesting back roads. Vivien and i had a meeting that morning, but we broke away as soon as we could and drove to Lake Norman as fast as deemed prudent. When we arrived, the group was already eating, but there were still plenty of hot dogs, hamburgers, and birthday cake left, and we jumped in!

After lunch, Donna found some bread, which we fed to some of the largest carp I've ever seen. Tom gave us rides in his motor boat, and Karen Weleer and Don Atkinson spent most of the afternoon in the water while the rest of us lounged and talked on the pier.

All together, there were eight Miatas in the Boyd's driveway, including one from the Carolina's chapter.

Miata Conditioning

The following has been reprinted via the Miata Owners of Mid Michigan by Earl Fife

While enduring "the non-driving days" I try to keep in condition for the Miata events that fill my Spring, Summer and Fall. So, I have thought up a six step plan to keep me in a state of readiness...

1. I keep limber enough to get in and out of my Miata... I have set up a closet with Dutch doors on it and a chair inside. Several times a day, I enter the closet through the bottom door (keeping the top door shut) and sit in the chair.

2. To keep fit for weekly washing/waxing routines, I practice on kitchen appliances.

3. Once a week, I jump in and out of the shower with my clothes on. This helps keep me accustomed to those times I get caught in the rain and cannot maintain MDS (minimum dry speed).

4. To keep my skin conditioned, I spend 20 minutes a day under a heat lamp with a strong fan blowing on me.

5. On trips in the off-season in the other car, we only take what we can pack in the glove compartment.

6. To keep my reflexes sharp, I keep my speed above 40 MPH as I dodge the potholes on Boulton Street. The constant swerving makes me think I have been transported back to Deal's Gap.

Mountain trip October 1-3
Registration Deadline September 18th

Plans are just about complete for the Tarheel Miata Club's Fall Mountain Trip. Paul Weller and Brenda Williams will lead us to Roanoke on Friday, October 1, by some GREAAAAAT bac roads. We'll have good food, good fellowship, exciting shopping, and fascinating sightseeing!

On Friday and Saturday nights, we'll be staying at the Hampton Inn at 6621 Thirlane Road in Roanoke. Brenda Williams has reserved twelve rooms for us, but you 've got to register by September 18th, or the hotel will release the unused rooms. So far, the Linko's, Wellers, Bohrers, Carsons, and Williams have signed up. The rate is $75 per night, single or double occupancy. Register by calling 1-800-426-7866 or 1-540-265-2600. Give them the confirmation number 87964382.

There will be two caravans going to Roanoke. One caravan will leave Greensboro about 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning. Call Paul Weller at 336-621-8502 for details of the meeting place, etc.. The other caravan will leave Winston-Salem about 10:00 on Friday. Call Brenda Williams at 540-632-6774 to find out about that caravan. If you can't caravan with us on friday, you can join us Friday evening or anytime Saturday, but please call Brenda to let her know you are coming.

The two groups will rendezvous at a secret place and continue on to Moosie's Restaurant on Smith Mountain Lake. After lunch, we'll continue on more back roads to the Hampton Inn, where we will relax until supper time. Dinner on Friday will be at a Brazilian/Italian restaurant in Roanoke, and after supper we can go to the street music festival.

Essentially, Saturday will be free time, but there's lots that we can do. We can go shopping in the Roanoke Market Area, at places like La-De-Da and Edwards Wine Merchants. We can visit the Virginia Transportation Museum. We can go antique shopping in Salem, VA. or we can cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway up to the fall festival at Buchannan, VA. The famous Natural Bridge isn't so far away either.

Saturday evening, its Montano's Italian restaurant, and after supper we'll go up Mill Mountain to see the lights of Roanoke.

Sunday morning, we can find breakfast and then caravan home. All in all, we should commend Brenda for her fine planning!
