Club Birthday Party July 17th

Tom and Donna Byrd have graciously agreed to host the Tarheel Miata Club birthday party again this year at their beautiful home on Lake Norman.

The affair will begin at 11:00 a.m. on July 17th, and we will eat about 12:30. The club will provide hamburgers, buns, condiments, chips and soft drinks. Karen Weller is baking the club birthday cake, so all you need to do is bring one dish -- and your swim suit and towel.

Most of us will caravan to the party by back roads. The caravan will meet at Herbie's at I-40 and Wendover Avenue (Exit 214) at 8:45 and leave at 9:00 sharp.

If you are coming from Winston-Salem, you might prefer to join the caravan on Route 801 just south of I-40 (Exit 180) just west of the Yadkin river about 9:30 or 9:45. Find a place on NC 801 and wait on us.

If you don't want to caravan, take I-40 to I-77. At Exit 36 (Mooresville - Lake Norman Exit) turn right onto Route 150. After the bridge over Lake Norman, take the first left (Greenwood). Bear right at the end onto Gordon (the sign may be down), and take the first left onto LeGrand. The Byrd home is at 9324 LeGrand.

RSVP by July 10 -- ABSOLUTELY no later than July 14, to 336-945-9003 or 828-478-2766. No email replies please.

Autocross in Rocky Mount
submitted by the Tarheel Sports Car Club

Sports and Compacts, LLC the Miata Specialists will be sponsoring the July 11 Autocross put on by the Tarheel Sports Car Club (THSCC). The autocross will be held at the old Rocky Mount Airport.

THSCC has agreed to hold a club class for Miata autocross drivers in addition to their regular classes. There will be a basic tech/safety inspection.

Please plan on joining us at the Autocross on July 11. Please let us know if you plan to drive or attend by e-mail to scmiata@bellsouth.net or calling 919-790-3833 to Carl or Jeff. This will allow us to plan for the club class with THSCC.

Please plan on attending even if you do not drive in the autocross as you will have a chance to see other Miatas and sports cars in a high performance environment.

Thanks - Jeff and Carl

Eating and Driving in the Evening

it was a good time! Nine Miatas with seventeen people converged on The Old Place Restaurant in the big city of Bonlee, N.C. on Staurday, June 19th. The food at The Old Place was just plain good old country cooking, which everyone enjoyed.

After the meal, six of the nine cars caravanned back to Greensboro by some back roads. There was a light rain, but that didn't dampen anyone's spirit. Navigator Vivien Carson, who had carefully pre-planned the route, only missed three turns and had to back track. A highlight of the trip was a stop at Cedar Rock Park. The caravan arrived back in Greensboro about 9:00 p.m.

Fall Mountain Trip Approaches
October 1-3 in Roanoke

Brenda Williams is getting it together. The plan for our Fall Mountain Trip, that is!

Brenda says we'll be staying at the Hampton Inn Airport in Roanoke, Virginia, the nights of October 1st and 2nd. She's reserved twelve (Count 'em - twelve!) rooms for us, eight with king size beds and four with doubles. The rate is $75 per night, single or double occupancy. You must call the Hampton Inn at 1-800-426-7866 or 1-540-265-2600. Be sure to give them confirmation number 87964382. You must call before September 18th, and cancellations must be made by 6p.pm on September 27th to avoid charges. Hopefully, there won't be any cancellations!

What will we do when we get there? Brenda's still working on that. So far, she says there's a festival in Buchanan on Saturday, October 2, and we can take back roads or perhaps the Blue Ridge Parkway on our way to the festival. Or, we could visit the big star and the zoo on Mill Mountain, overlooking Roanoke, or Natural Bridge. She says there is a NASCAR race in Martinsville on Sunday as well.

Watch for more information in the mail as the time draws near. In particular, we'll probably arrange for a caravan for the drive to Roanoke.
