Help Wanted
An Editorial

Well, here goes. I've got a new job - writing this newsletter often enough to keep everyone up to date on what's going on in the Tarheel Miata Club. And you've got a new editor to get used to -- new abilities, new faults, and perhaps a different outlook from that of Paul Weller, who did such an excellent job as your editor for the past few years.

I've got some experience with newsletters, but that doesn't mean I know it all. I sincerely want your help. I plan to produce a newsletter whenever I have something to say -- probably about every six weeks.

Got an idea for the newsletter? Give me a call. I take notes over the phone pretty good. My phone number is (336)644-0656.

Can you write a technical article? Something that is old hat to you may be a revalation to someone else. Jot it down and mail it to me. Don't worry about spelling and grammar - I'll clean it up. The address is 9 Keppen Trail, Greensboro, NC 27410. The mail is checked almost daily.

A new feature of the newsletter will be reviews of interesting, out-of-the way restaurants. I'd sure like some ideas for that!

I'm looking forward to this new job and hope you'll help me fill Paul Weller's big shoes.

Dues Due Now

Tarheel Miata Club annual dues are due now, so look for a dues notice in the mail soon. Richard Linko, club treasurer, says the dues will be $25 per car again this year, and you get to participate in all the club events and you receive this great little newsletter in return. Most of the money goes for postage, and to buy insurance for the club.

Richard indicates that the event fee will remain $3.00 per car per event.

24 Attend Christmas
Party!

12 Miatas visited Laddie and Duke's restaurant on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro at 4 o'clock on Saturday, December 5th. After dining, the group went by caravan to the home of Ruth and Jim Luke for the annual white elephant exchange.

Each person placed a beautifully wrapped gift under the Christmas tree. Then, each person drew three numbers from a bowl. As the numbers were called at random, the people took gifts from under the tree, or another person. Sometimes, a person had as many as three gifts, and sometimes none, but when a person had no more numbers, his last gift could not be taken away. So, when all was said and done, each person had a gift -- but still didn't know what they had. The gifts were opened one by one, and included such unwanted items as glass coffee mugs and monkey statuettes. Some of the gifts were ones that returned from previous years. Perhaps the least desireable white elephant, and the most fun, was a pair of Miata tie-down brackets! (Webmaster knows nothing about this gift...)

In the brief business portion of the meeting, Tom Byrd crowned Vivien Carson as the 1999 club president. Mrs. Carson noted that ex-president Chris Bunting would be "a hard act to follow," and thanked Paul Weller for his work with the club last year also. Mrs. Carson announced a planning meeting for all the officers, to be held early in January.

The Home Place Restaurant

On a trip to Petersburg, Virginia, I happened to be passing by Dinwiddie, Virginia, about lunch time, so I decided to saple the local cuisine. A sign on I-85 directed me to take exit 53 to the Home Place Restaurant.

From exit 53, I turned onto Route 703 and followed it to Dinwiddie. At US 1, a sign directed me to turn left, and another sign about a mile down the road directed me to turn left onto Spring Creek Road. The restaurant is at the end of the road, and there's a big sign that says, "Thanks for not giving up!"

Inside, the restaurant had a clean, cheerful, family atmosphere with white table cloths. The place was not crowded, and several of the tables seemed to have business men treating clients to lunch. I was directed to a table by a window overlooking a small lake. My waitress was tall and slender and about sixty years old.

The menu was varied. I selected a steak with salad and vegetables (I'm on a low carb diet) and iced tea, and the tab was about twelve dollars - reasonable for what I got. The service was prompt.

All together a pleasant experience. Iplan to patronize The Home Place Restaurant whenever I can. There's a Sunday buffet, groups can be accommodated, and the phone number is (804)469-9596.
